Download or read book In Search of Happiness Healing Through Mental Health Poetry written by Jordan Brown and published by Jordan Brown. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Rare, Restorative Take on Mental Health For Challenging Times Poetry has way of connecting directly to the heart, and that's especially true with this poetry book about mental health and mental illness. It's too simplistic to label this as depression poetry or anxiety poetry--this is poetry about what it means to be a human being struggling and coping with everyday mental health issues. This is self love poetry. This is poetry for people who don't like poetry or have never even read it before. Here's an example of the poetry you'll find: You Can't Write Poetry About Depression You can’t write poetry about depression You have to feel it It has to seep out of your bones It has to leak out of your eyes The poetry is in the becoming the shifting feeling the falling breath the terror of monotony the naked desperation the losing of hope and the long wondering if it will ever return You can’t write poetry about depression You have to experience it You have to know it like a brother And you have to hate it so much that you use it you terrorize it for what it d`id to you Until you see the sudden strength hidden within the darkness Until you become the darkness and in so doing you realize you’ve always had the light Before he became a social worker, a writer/poet, and a mental health advocate tweeting for 31,000 followers, and before he started writing the popular weekly email newsletter, The Mental Health Update, Jordan Brown was terrified and lost. Forced to respond to a parent's mental health crisis right after graduating from college, Jordan made decisions he never thought he would have to make. This experience of feeling completely unprepared to deal with mental health issues led him, after giving back to others in the Peace Corps in Guatemala and in AmeriCorps in Montana, to seek out and take the 12-week Family-to-Family course with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). A year later, he was teaching the Family-to-Family course and starting a family support group in Helena, Montana to help others deal with their own mental health crises. But everything changed in 2012. A year before finding mental health resources and a supportive community with NAMI in 2013, a 24-year-old Jordan was rushed into sudden open-heart surgery to repair a failing aortic valve. Surprisingly, the physical recovery from this near-death experience was nothing compared to the emotional recovery that wreaked havoc on his life by worsening anxiety and OCD symptoms that began in childhood. Mental illness caused months of insomnia and progressed to severe depression and worsening suicidal thoughts. It is out of these experiences that In Search of Happiness was born. Three years in the making, this mental health poetry book carries the reader along a four-part journey through overcoming anxiety and relieving societal pressure, to receiving healing and, ultimately, finding meaning. With special emphasis on anxiety and depression, In Search of Happiness examines the vast spectrum from mental illness to mental health. At its core, the book of poems addresses the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual reality that is the everyday mental health experience. It's not only a book about depression poetry or anxiety poetry. It's life-affirming poetry that helps others create their own meaning. And it's not just one person's story as much as it is a collective mental-health story emerging from one person's experience. In Search of Happiness is a vulnerable collection of poetry and short essays that encourages the reader to see mental health in a new, more hopeful light. This is not the doom-and-gloom narrative that scares society and spreads stigma. This poetry-and-prose collection increases mental health awareness by highlighting the entire mental health spectrum on which we all exist.

Book excerpt: Following the success of the bestselling Clean Gut and Wheat Belly comes this essential guide to improving digestive health from an expert in functional medicine—who reveals why everything that ails us, from fatigue to weight gain to bloating and bad skin, can be traced back to the gut, and shares his cleansing plan to help us reclaim our health. Dr. Vincent Pedre understands gut problems firsthand. He suffered from IBS for years before becoming an expert in functional medicine and learning how to heal his body from the inside. Dr. Pedre used his own experience to develop The Gut C.A.R.E. Program—an approach that draws from both Western and Eastern methodologies, combining integrative and functional medicine—that has a proven success record in his private practice in New York. Now, for the first time, Dr. Pedre makes his revolutionary plan for health and wellness available to everyone. Happy Gut takes readers step-by-step through Gut C.A.R.E.—Cleanse, Activate, Restore, and Enhance—which eliminates food triggers, clears the gut of unfriendly pathogens, and replaces them with healthy probiotics and nutrients that repair and heal the gut. Rather than masking symptoms with medication, he shows us how to address the problem at its core to restore the gastrointestinal system to its proper functioning state. By fixing problems in the gut, followers of Dr. Pedre’s program have found that their other health woes are also cured and have lost weight, gained energy, and improved seemingly unrelated issues, such as seasonal allergies, in addition to eliminating their chronic muscle and abdominal pain. Complete with recipes and meal plans including gluten-free, low-fat, and vegetarian options, a 28-day gut cleanse, yoga postures to help digestion, and testimonials from many of his patients, Happy Gut will help you feel better and eliminate gut issues for life.
Download or read book The Humming Effect written by Jonathan Goldman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible guide to the practice of conscious humming • Details conscious humming and breathing exercises from simple to advanced, including online access to examples of these practices • Examines the latest studies on sound, revealing how humming helps with stress levels, sleep, and blood pressure, increases lymphatic circulation, releases endorphins, creates new neural pathways in the brain, and boosts blood platelet production • Explores the spiritual use of humming, including its use as a sonic yoga technique and its role in many world traditions • Includes access to online examples, allowing you to experience the powerful vibratory resonance that humming can create Humming is one of the simplest and yet most profound sounds we can make. If you have a voice and can speak, you can hum. Research has shown humming to be much more than a self-soothing sound: it affects us on a physical level, reducing stress, inducing calmness, and enhancing sleep as well as lowering heart rate and blood pressure and producing powerful neurochemicals such as oxytocin, the “love” hormone. In this guide to conscious humming, Jonathan and Andi Goldman show that you do not need to be a musician or singer to benefit from sound healing practices—all you need to do is hum. They provide conscious humming and breathing exercises from simple to advanced, complete with online examples, allowing you to experience the powerful vibratory resonance that humming can create and harness its healing benefits for body, mind, and spirit. They explore the science behind sound healing, revealing how self-created sounds can literally rearrange molecular structure and how humming not only helps with stress levels, sleep, and blood pressure but also increases lymphatic circulation and melatonin production, releases endorphins, creates new neural pathways in the brain, and releases nitric oxide, a neurotransmitter fundamental to health and well-being. The authors show how sound can act as a triggering mechanism for the manifestation of your conscious intentions. They also examine the spiritual use of humming, including its use as a sonic yoga technique and its role in many world traditions, such as the Om, Aum, or Hum of Hindu and Tibetan traditions. Providing a self-healing method accessible to all, the authors reveal that, even if you have no musical ability, we are all sound healers.

Often by the time clients enter a therapist’s office they have been told what to do—often soundly and sensibly—by well-meaning family, friends, and health professionals. Download or read book Religions of the United States in Practice written by Colleen McDannell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2001-11-25 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religions of the United States in Practice is a rich anthology of primary sources with accompanying essays that examines religious behavior in America. From praying in an early American synagogue to performing Mormon healing rituals to debating cremation, Volume 1 explores faith through action from Colonial times through the nineteenth century. The documents and essays consider the religious practices of average people--praying, singing, healing, teaching, imagining, and persuading. Some documents are formal liturgies while other texts describe more spontaneous religious actions. Because religious practices also take place in the imagination, dreams, visions, and fictional accounts are also included. Accompanying each primary document is an essay that sets the religious practice in its historical and theological context--making this volume ideal for classroom use and accessible to any reader. The introductory essays explain the various meanings of religious practices as lived out in churches and synagogues, in parlors and fields, beside rivers, on lecture platforms, and in the streets. Religions of the United States in Practice offers a sampling of religious perspectives in order to approximate the living texture of popular religious thought and practice in the United States. The history of religion in America is more than the story of institutions and famous people. This anthology presents a more nuanced story composed of the everyday actions and thoughts of lay men and women.
