Download or read book A Good and Happy Child written by Justin Evans and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young man reexamines his childhood memories of strange visions and erratic behavior to answer disturbing questions that continue to haunt him and his new family in this psychological thriller named a Washington Post best book of 2007. Thirty-year-old George Davies can’t bring himself to hold his newborn son. After months of accepting his lame excuses and strange behavior, his wife has had enough. She demands that he see a therapist, and George, desperate to save his unraveling marriage and redeem himself as a father and husband, reluctantly agrees. As he delves into his childhood memories, he begins to recall things he hasn’t thought of in twenty years. Events, people, and strange situations come rushing back. The odd, rambling letters his father sent home before he died. The jovial mother who started dating too soon after his father’s death. A boy who appeared one night when George was lonely, then told him secrets he didn’t want to know. How no one believed this new friend was real and that he was responsible for the bad things that were happening. Terrified by all that he has forgotten, George struggles to remember what really happened in the months following his father’s death. Were his ominous visions and erratic behavior the product of a grief-stricken child’s overactive imagination? Or were his father’s colleagues, who blamed a darker, more malevolent force, right to look to the supernatural as a means to end George’s suffering? Twenty years later, George still does not know. But when a mysterious murder is revealed, remembering the past becomes the only way George can protect himself--and his young family. A psychological thriller in the tradition of Donna Tartt’s The Secret History--with shades of The Exorcist--A Good and Happy Child leaves you questioning the things you remember and frightened of the things you’ve forgotten. “Beautifully written and perfectly structured. . . . This novel is much more than The Omen for the latte generation, and Evans cleverly subverts expectations at every turn.” –Washington Post “[A] satisfying, suspenseful first novel. . . . Young George’s intriguing story unbalances the reader right up to the book’s deliciously chilling end.” —People “A scary, grown-up ghost story that combines Southern gothic with more than a twist of The Exorcist. . . . Combine[s] mind-bending storytelling with excellent prose.” —Portland Tribune “Think Rosemary’s Baby—plus . . . told in the kind of prose that mesmerizes, sweeping the reader along so fast that there’s no time to ask questions.” —Hartford Courant “[A] dazzling debut . . . part psychological thriller, part horror story.” —Chicago Tribune “Relat[es] his otherworldly suspense story with the cool, calm eye of a skeptic.” —Entertainment Weekly (A—)
Download or read book Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons written by Lorna Landvik and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2004-02-03 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A lively story as delectable as a five-pound box of chocolates . . . a thoroughly engaging chronicle of friendship and the substantive place it holds in women’s lives.”—Anne D. LeClaire, author of Leaving Eden The women of Freesia Court are convinced that there is nothing good coffee, delicious desserts, and a strong shoulder can’t fix. Laughter is the glue that holds them together—the foundation of a book group they call AHEB (Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons), an unofficial “club” that becomes much more. It becomes a lifeline. Holding on through forty eventful years, there’s Faith, a lonely mother of twins who harbors a terrible secret that has condemned her to living a lie; big, beautiful Audrey, the resident sex queen who knows that with good posture and an attitude you can get away with anything; Merit, the doctor’s shy wife with the face of an angel and the private hell of an abusive husband; Kari, a wise woman with a wonderful laugh who knows that the greatest gifts appear after life’s fiercest storms; and finally, Slip, a tiny spitfire of a woman who isn’t afraid to look trouble straight in the eye. This stalwart group of friends depicts a special slice of American life, of stay-at-home days and new careers, of children and grandchildren, of bold beginnings and second chances, in which the power of forgiveness, understanding, and the perfectly timed giggle fit is the CPR that mends broken hearts and shattered dreams. “It is impossible not to get caught up in the lives of the book group members. . . . Landvik’s gift lies in bringing these familiar women to life with insight and humor.”—The Denver Post “A guilty pleasure . . . This light, snappy read may be [Landvik’s] best yet.”—Midwest Living
Download or read book Where Did My Life Go Homeless and Out of Business written by K.D. Sanders and published by Kevin Dale Sanders. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Where Did My Life Go? Homeless and Out of Business” is by far one of the most raw, powerful, and engaging reads that I’ve come across in a long, long time. Author K.D. Sanders offers readers a very personal and unaltered look into his life, thoughts, and feelings as he underwent some very rough times as a homeless man while experiencing that many of us will never even come close to in our ordinary lives. I say this and the book may seem quite gloomy at first, but I also would say there’s another side to it – I interpret the book as having a sort of theme about personal redemption and keeping headstrong even through all the bad things that life can throw at you. The author manages to keep his spirits high even while dealing with unfortunate circumstances and for that I admire his courage. As well as this, the text is written in a way that flows nicely due to a relatively relaxed undertone and there are plenty of general musings about the author’s opinion on homeless life in general that I found to be very thought-provoking (and even sobering at times). Overall, I enjoyed the read and I found it to be honestly quite refreshingly new compared to what I’ve been coming across these days. Definitely worth checking out. - Amazon Review

Download or read book The Endless Knot written by Gail Bowen and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tenth novel in the highly acclaimed Joanne Kilbourn series features the murderous fallout of a tell-all book on the troubled adult children of Canadian celebrities. When journalist Kathryn Morrissey’s sensational book on the lives of thirteen adult children of prominent Canadians is published, one of the parents, Sam Parker, is furious enough to take a pot shot at the author, grazing her shoulder. Charges are laid, and Joanne’s new beau, Zack Shreve, is hired by Parker as his defence counsel. At the trial, which Joanne is covering for NationTV, Shreve focuses the jury’s attention not on who shot whom, but on why — on the ethics governing the relationship between a journalist and her subject. Morrissey’s betrayal of her subjects opens up questions about an even more serious betrayal — the betrayal of children by their parents. While everyone condemns Parker for taking a gun to Morrissey, no one can fault his defence of his only child, Glen, a transsexual. The mutual love and commitment between this father and child stands in stark contrast to the alienation between Howard Dowhaniuk, Saskatchewan’s former premier, and his son, Charlie. On the day of the verdict, Morrissey is brutally murdered, and Joanne’s investigation quickly has her trying to unravel the endless knot of the relationship between parent and child. A deeply affecting novel of trust and betrayal, The Endless Knot is a superb mystery by a virtuoso of the genre.
Download or read book The Russians Are Coming written by Lily Alex and published by PublishAmerica LLLP. This book was released on 2003-01-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story is an imaginative and spirited narrative embracing both diversity and universality. Set in small-town America, the novel's main characters, six Russian newcomers, provide a fresh perspective on a close-knit college community. Two couples, one child, and a single woman make up the core group. The story follows them and offers to the reader the unique opportunity to explore not only the surface differences between Russian and American lifestyles, but the more profound similarities. Uncertainty, infidelity, and betrayal plague both the immigrants and their fellow townsfolk, but such universal redeemers as love, family, and friendship are the fundamental ties that bind. Narrowed to a specific fourteen-month time frame, but enhanced with flashbacks and epilogue, the novel shows everyday life in both countries. Jealousies, lusts, and misdemeanors (and even organized crime!) have their place, as do finer passions for truth, learning, love, and simple neighborliness. The novel is, by turns, tragic and heart-warming, passionate and instructive, but always, and ultimately, hope-filled.
Download or read book The Joanne Kilbourn Mysteries 6 Book Bundle Volume 3 written by Gail Bowen and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 1654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A treat for long-time fans as well as a perfect introduction for newcomers to this classic series of dramatic mysteries featuring Joanne Kilbourn, from "the queen of Canadian crime fiction." (Winnipeg Free Press) In The Last Good Day, Joanne meets the tough-yet-tender criminal lawyer and paraplegic playboy Zack Shreve, who will soon take on a key role in her life. The occasion is tragic; a young legal colleague of Zack's plunges his car into a northern lake only hours after beginning to tell Joanne a disturbing secret. In The Endless Knot, Zack and Joanne find themselves enmeshed in a violent crime. Their diverging loyalties and obligations test their growing relationship. It is put under strain again in The Brutal Heart, when a birthday barbecue is interrupted by a phone call informing Zack of the suspicious death of a local call girl -- one whose gilt-edged client list once included Zack himself. The Nesting Dolls begins in a blizzard. A young woman hands a baby to a friend of Joanne's teenage daughter and disappears. Hours later, the young woman's body is found in a parking lot. Soon, two women with compelling claims are fighting over the child and again, Zack and Joanne find themselves on different sides of a confict that threatens to tear more than one family apart. In Kaleidoscope, Joanne has just retired from her university career, and is looking forward to a summer at the family cottage. Only a last-minute change of plans keeps the Kilbourn-Shreve clan from tragedy when their home, and Joanne's own past, become flashpoints in an increasingly deadly battle between developers and activists over the future of a troubled neighbourhood. The Gifted focuses on Joanne and Zack's teenage daughter, Taylor, who is already an impressively talented artist. Taylor falls under the spell of a beautiful but damaged young artists' model, and soon Joanne discovers not only that the young man has dark secrets but that at least one of her own friends may be complicit in a plan that could put Taylor's life at risk. The bundle includes an excerpt from the 15th in Joanne Kilbourn series, 12 Rose Street, as well as a Q & A with the author.
Download or read book Paper Angels written by Billy Coffey and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2011-11-09 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andy Sommerville seems no different than others in his rural Virginia community, but what sets him apart is that his best friend is an angel. The angel is God's answer to a childhood prayer Andy offered to a twinkling star that his deceased mother once called "the door to heaven." The first angelic proclamation instructs Andy to find the wooden keepsake box in his grandparents' attic. Over the years, he directs Andy to fill it with apparently meaningless objects from twelve people with who Andy randomly crosses paths. Andy's world is turned upside down when a brutal attack leaves Andy burned and the boy he loved as a son dead. At this crucial juncture, the angel abandons him to loneliness and pain. All that remains is the wooden box Andy has always kept safe, and a new angel, who will use its contents to reveal truth to him as a result, he discovers the defining truth of his life, new hope in the community he loves, and greater trust in the God who sustains him. The story is told from Andy's hospital bed, where he awakes feeling God has abandoned him. Without being preachy or saccharine, the author brings the small town to life and reveals a spiritual secret--the presence of angels--that helps a wounded man discover the defining truth of his life, place new hope in the community he loves, and trust totally in the God who sustains him.
