Book excerpt: David Sedaris, the “champion storyteller,” (Los Angeles Times) returns with his first new collection of personal essays since the bestselling Calypso Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most. To cope, he walks for miles through a nearly deserted city, smelling only his own breath. He vacuums his apartment twice a day, fails to hoard anything, and contemplates how sex workers and acupuncturists might be getting by during quarantine. As the world gradually settles into a new reality, Sedaris too finds himself changed. His offer to fix a stranger’s teeth rebuffed, he straightens his own, and ventures into the world with new confidence. Newly orphaned, he considers what it means, in his seventh decade, no longer to be someone’s son. And back on the road, he discovers a battle-scarred America: people weary, storefronts empty or festooned with Help Wanted signs, walls painted with graffiti reflecting the contradictory messages of our time: Eat the Rich. Trump 2024. Black Lives Matter. In Happy-Go-Lucky, David Sedaris once again captures what is most unexpected, hilarious, and poignant about these recent upheavals, personal and public, and expresses in precise language both the misanthropy and desire for connection that drive us all. If we must live in interesting times, there is no one better to chronicle them than the incomparable David Sedaris.

Book Razumoff s Story

Download or read book Razumoff s Story written by Alexis S. Troubetzkoy and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Memoirs for the most part are tedious,” writes Prince Adam Razumoff, “dreary stuff on the whole.” The author avoids this trap by writing his memoir as a novel... tracing his life through stops in London, Paris, Constantinople, Moscow, Washington and Montréal. As he does, he describes his encounters with the famous, the important, and the influential, and with "those who hold his heart - and his hatred". A fast-moving, compelling story, it is more than a record of one man’s life; it is an authentic history centered around the War of 1812 — the “unknown war” or “forgotten war” between United States and Canada. It pivots around deaths of innocents, of loves gone wrong, of revenge and ultimately of searches for redemption. In his introduction, Alexis Troubetzkoy describes the serendipity by which Razumoff ’s manuscript came into his hands, together with a trove of supporting documentation. Prince Troubetzkoy is an internationally published author who has written on the mysterious disappearance of Tsar Alexander I, a brief history of the Crimean War, and a history of Arctic development. More recently he authored The St. Petersburg Connection: Russian-American Friendship from Revolution to Revolution. A fellow of the Association of Russian-American Scholars in the U.S.A., he has been Headmaster of Selwyn House School in Québec, and of Appleby College and the Toronto French School in Ontario. He resides in Toronto with his wife, Hélène, while their daughter and son continue to live in Budapest and Majorca.

Book TAM O SHANTER S RIDE The Story and the Poem

Download or read book TAM O SHANTER S RIDE The Story and the Poem written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 303 In this 303rd issue of the Baba Indaba?s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the story of ?TAM O? SHANTER?S RIDE?. One day, many, many years ago it was market-day in Ayr, Scotland. The farmers had come into town from all the country round about, to sell or exchange their farm produce, and buy what they needed to take home. Amongst these farmers was a man by the name of Tam o' Shanter; a good natured, happy-go-lucky sort of person, but, I am sorry to say, he enjoyed his tipple a bit too much. Now Tam's wife, Kate, was a grievous scold; always nagging and faultfinding, and I fear making it far easier for Tam to do wrong than if she had treated him more kindly. Because of this, Tam was happier away from home; and this day had escaped his wife's scolding tongue, mounted his good gray mare Meg, and galloped off as fast as he could go to Market. Tam finished his buying and trading by lunchtime and he called in on his friends in the tavern, to share a meal and "Whet his Whistle". Well after the sun had set and the moon was high in the sky, the publican called ?Time Gentleman Please? Tam sauntered out of the pub, maybe that should be, wobbled out of the pub and after a while managed to find his mare, Meg. Then with great difficulty he mounted her and pointed her South out of the town towards home. And that?s when all the trouble started??. What sort of trouble you ask? Well, you?ll have to download and read the story to find out for yourselves. Needless to say the story of Tam?s troubles was spread all over the county and talked about for years so that it became a well-known legend. Many years after Tam ride, a famous Scottish Poet, Robert Burns, wrote a now famous poem about ?Tam O? Shanter?s Ride? which is also included in this little book. Book 100 Animated Feature Films

Download or read book 100 Animated Feature Films written by Andrew Osmond and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 20 years ago, animated features were widely perceived as cartoons for children. Today, though, they encompass an astonishing range of films, styles and techniques. There is the powerful adult drama of Waltz with Bashir; the Gallic sophistication of Belleville Rendez-Vous; the eye-popping violence of Japan's Akira; and the stop-motion whimsy of Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Andrew Osmond provides an entertaining and illuminating guide to the endlessly diverse world of animated features, with entries on 100 of the most interesting and important animated films from around the world, from the 1920s to the present day. Blending in-depth history and criticism, 100 Animated Feature Films balances the blockbusters with local success stories from Eastern Europe to Hong Kong. This revised and updated new edition addresses films that have been released since publication of the first edition, such as the mainstream hits Frozen, The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse, as well as updated entries on franchises such as the Toy Story movies. It also covers bittersweet indy visions such as Don Hertzfeldt's It's Such a Beautiful Day, Charlie Kaufman's Anomalisa, Isao Takahata's Tale of the Princess Kaguya, the family saga The Wolf Children and the popular blockbuster Your Name. Osmond's wide-ranging selection also takes in the Irish fantasy Song of the Sea, France's I Lost My Body and Spain's Chico & Rita. Osmond's authoritative and entertaining entries combine with a contextualising introduction and key filmographic information to provide an essential guide to animated film.
