Download or read book 50 Fabulous written by Jaki Scarcello and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some women dread the approach of their fiftieth birthdays, fearing it’s goodbye to good times and good looks. Others barely notice the transition; they know how to welcome each age for its particular blessings. These are the women Jaki Scarcello calls ‘Women of the Harvest’—women who aren’t trying to turn back the clock, but reaping the fruits of a life well lived, recognising and receiving the real gifts this stage of life brings. Women for whom ‘fifty plus’ doesn’t mean less, but more. Drawing on her own experience, as well as exhaustive research into other women’s stories—a series of interviews conducted in five countries—Scarcello shows with wisdom and wit how changing our attitude toward ageing can bring about a ‘virtuous cycle’ of rejuvenation. Women who know this embrace the years after 50 with a spirit of optimism and energy that is truly liberating. They understand that in maturity a woman has the potential for genuine elegance, a beauty more than skin-deep that sparkles confidently and generously from the eyes, and a whole new brand of personal sexiness. On a deeper level, they possess a secret power and joy, which radiates outward into the world and illuminates everyone around them. These women who blossom in their 50s know that their time of life is a time of grace, and that it’s richer and more ripe with possibility now than at any other time in our history. Through their stories there runs a common thread of spiritual transformation—the harvest of a good life when it starts to divest itself of youthʼs superficial anxieties. In the space that opens up beyond 50, experience and potential form a perfect fusion: this is the most fertile ground a woman ever knows.

Download or read book Jamaican Creole Goes Web written by Andrea Moll and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-scale migration after WWII and the prominence of Jamaican Creole in the media have promoted its use all around the globe. Deterritorialisation has entailed the contact-induced transformation of Jamaican Creole in diaspora communities and its adoption by ‘crossers’. Taking sociolinguistic globalisation yet a step further, this monograph investigates the use of Jamaican Creole in a web discussion forum by combining quantitative and qualitative methodology in a sociolinguistic ‘third wave’ approach. In the absence of standardised orthography, one of the central aims of this study is to document the sociolinguistic styling and grassroots (anti-) standardisation of spelling norms for Jamaican Creole in the web forum as a virtual community of practice. An analysis of individual repertoire portraits demonstrates that conventionalised spelling variants co-occur with basilectal Jamaican Creole morphosyntax in ‘Cyber-Jamaican’ as the digital ethnolinguistic repertoire of the discussion forum. The enregisterment of this ethnolinguistic repertoire is closely tied to staged performance, which establishes the link between ‘Cyber-Jamaican’ and the negotiation of sociolinguistic identity and authenticity via stance-taking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “After inexplicably being placed in the wrong bassinet at the city hospital where I was born, I grew up with a nagging feeling of somehow not belonging, and a father who always suspected I was not his. I lived another’s life and he mine, our paths amazingly crossing throughout the years, until 57 years later I discovered the truth. This is the story of my life in someone else’s world, my quest for answers, and how I’ve come to terms with the hand which fate has dealt me.” – Fred George, Author This is a story about two boys who, at birth, were inexplicably switched, a switch that would dramatically change the author’s life in every aspect—religion, ethnicity, economics, and culture. Time and time again, the two boys’ paths cross with one another’s before ultimately discovering, decades later, that they aren’t who they spent their whole lives believing they were. At 57, Fred George sees his birth family for the first time, recognizing in them his own mannerisms and traits. George’s retelling of his switch at birth is not so much an account of the switch itself, but rather the story of his life from birth to present with the George family. The story is interesting and insightful, complete with family photos that provide readers with an inside view of the culture and of the times of George’s life.
Download or read book The Courage of Our Confusions written by Deane W. Ferm and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-08-04 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was once said of Ben Franklin that in the final decade of his life he had reached the age Òwhen life slopes to an end.Ó So here I am in my 8th decade, sliding down that slippery slope! It has been a great ride! During my life as an author of 8 books, I have written about other people and what they believed. A Christian Century reviewer of my Contemporary American Theologies. A Critical Survey gave his assessment: ÒFerm's greatest asset is his uncanny ability to synthesize these diverse theologies into a larger conceptual wholeÉA landmark of clarity.Ó This is what I have tried my best to do! Here, however, as I slide down the slippery slope, I express my own views which never seem to settle down, but keep changing with the challenge of new experiences. My lifetime mentor has been America's greatest philosopher William James whose writings have taught me to be aware of Òthe varieties of religious experienceÓ and Òthe right to believeÓ about the things that matter the most. In this book I confront such important issues as the meaning of religion, faith and doubt, the elusive inner self, God, Jesus, the bible, the church, the life to come Ð and I end with a challenge to senior citizens to get on with their unfinished doubts and lives. My deepest conviction is that the more I know, the less I know Ð that life continues to be a bewildering Mystery. I will continue investigating the central claims of religion while discarding the old myths with new realities. Let us make these claims our religious act! The greatest risk is not taking one! Let us always have the courage of our confusions! Deane William Ferm
