Download or read book The Music Teacher written by Barbara Hall and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2009-02-10 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Music Teacher, a penetrating and richly entertaining look into the heart and mind of a woman who has failed both as an artist and as a wife, Barbara Hall, award-winning creator and writer of such hit television series as Judging Amy and Joan of Arcadia, tells the story of a violinist who has accepted the limitations of her talent and looks for the casual satisfaction of trying to instill her passion for music in others. She gets more than she bargains for, however, when a young girl named Hallie enters her life. For here at last is the real thing: someone with the talent and potential to be truly great. In her drive to shape this young girl into the artist the teacher could never be, she makes one terrible mistake. As a result she is forced to reevaluate her whole life and come to terms with her future. Hall has crafted a thoroughly engrossing novel that examines the pitfalls of failure and holds up a mirror to the face of a culture that places success and achievement above all else.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It was 2005, and I was sitting in a large ballroom with over a thousand other music educators in the convention center for the Music Educators National Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when we were told that music education was in crisis. Student enrollment in music classes like band, choir, and orchestra were dropping at an alarming rate nation-wide. Music educators were going to lose their jobs if they could not figure out ways to attract students into their classrooms. The message was clear: we needed to start considering all types of alternatives such as guitar, music technology, Mariachi, blue grass, rock band, song writing, music theory, hand bells-any type of music class that would attract students and save jobs"--

Download or read book A Heritage to Remember written by Orpha Sanders Barnes and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-05-17 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncovering the day-to-day routines and activities of a family with seven children should be interesting in any age, but when it covers Depression years to World War II, its especially revealing. The narrative throughout is in rhyme, and the author is dealing mostly with first-hand experiences so she brings the common and not-so-common aspects of the Sanders family into bold relief. How to celebrate Christmas when there is virtually no money for gifts; how the father attempts to discourage the chicken-thief; how to keep food on the table when the bread-winner has trouble collecting for the household products he has sold door-to-door; and the isolation experienced when TB forces the mother to live for a year in a sanitarium out of town. The richness of the details in this narrative demonstrates the storehouse of memories possessed by Ms. Barnes as well as the insights gained from being a first-hand protagonist in this familys struggle. The six children who grew to maturity had many relatives nearby. The closeness of these relatives displays a dimension of community often lacking in our hectic, modern pace. Of special interest is the way this family (and especially the parents) devoted themselves to their church and its outreach. Gods work came first, as much of the fathers activities will demonstrate. Not a steadily unfolding plot, but more like a series of intriguing cameos, this narrative portrays a picture of one familys involvement in Mid-western culture of the 30s and 40s. These verses, laced with humor and pathos, show that a home is truly blessed where there is mutual love and a rich spiritual heritage.

Book excerpt: The story I show begins in 2007, New York City, the year before the financial crisis. The novel centers on three roommates; a teacher, financial analyst, and a bartender. The first part of the story focuses on the teacher and analyst. With their father and aunt’s influence pushing them towards their professions and dreams, both in unique ways, they learn the real lesson will be from reality and a changing world. Soon that world, or worse their dreams, turns on them and they must reinvent themselves afar. With the help of the bartender, they use their distinct talents to get back where they want to be. It’s only when they are away from their past, that they learn who they really are and what they really want. The storyline that sounds like the beginning of a bar joke, is anything but.
