But his past was not to be denied, and it was destined to catch up with him and plunge him into an international intrigue that cost him the love of his life and nearly his life itself. Download or read book Planning the Perfect Birthday written by Lily McNeil and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK It’s party time! Well, it’s “party time” for everyone else; it’s probably “super-stress time” for you, the party planner. There’s so much to do: invitations, food, theme, decorations, setting, activities, party favors, thank-you notes...the list goes on. This guide will take you through planning a party for a kid, a teenager, and an adult, as well as give you a heads-up in what to expect from each age group. This guide will also suggest some food, drink, and activity ideas to get every party started—and keep ‘em rolling. You’re giving a party for a specific person with their own preferences, so it’s best to tailor the theme, food, and atmosphere to that individual’s personality. MEET THE AUTHOR Lily is super-duper close to completing her Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Oxford. She also has a rather non-lucrative Master of Fine Arts in poetry. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Now on to the fun part: picking a theme. There are so many themed kits out there, from pirates to princesses to “Pink Poodle in Paris,” that you can be sure you’ll have all the necessary accoutrements to make your party très chic. The invitations will set the tone, so be sure to make them as colorful and exciting as possible. Many websites offer free or inexpensive “print-your-own” invitations—you just type or write in the date, time, and address. Other sites allow you to upload your own images onto high-quality cardstock that they’ll print and send to you. As for decor, you can go do-it-yourself or store-bought; whichever is easier. Let’s say you’re planning a Batman-themed party. It’s easy to stencil and cut out the Batman symbol in different sizes using black and yellow construction paper, and you can blow up black, yellow, and white balloons to display around the room. If your son or daughter (why not?) wants to dress up, there are tons of Batman costumes available. For party favors, you can tie each balloon to a Batman action figure that each kid can bring home with them. And there’s a lot to be said for Batman cupcake toppers. Buy a copy to keep reading!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting saga of deceit, scandal, sex, greed and power I've traveled all over the world. I've stayed in the best hotels and eaten in the best restaurants. But that isn't me. I'm a simple man. I have simple tastes and I live in a simple house. But people who knew of my past life still want to know . . . what's it like? What's it like to work for the richest family on earth, the Royal Family of Brunei? "Well they have money and they spend it," I answer them. I tire of the subject. I know once they get a taste of the story, the questions will keep coming. "No," they answer. "That's not what I mean. What's it like to travel with the Royal Family? What are they like?" How can I answer that? What are they like? They are one of the last true monarchies here on earth. They still rule with a word and with a wave of their hand, no different than they did centuries ago. I worked for a true monarchy, which could have been taken straight out of the movie, "The King and I". There is not enough time in a day or even a week to tell them all there is to tell. Yet this story is true. It is no movie nor is it a fairy tale. I lived it. For a simple man like me who lives in a simple house, to become a slave of the highest order and to have lived in their world is still surreal. I see you interrupting me, "A slave you say. There are no longer any slaves." I scoff at you. I was indeed a slave. What do you call a person who has no life other than what the prince or princess gives them as their daily morsel. What do you call a man who does not sleep but maybe three hours a night waiting by the phone for orders or instructions for twelve years on end? Shall I tell those who ask that the work almost killed me several times over? Shall I tell them that I was indeed a slave who lost his wife because of years of neglecting her and who did not get to see his own children grow up? Shall I tell them of the deceit, lies, and backstabbing which were the normal part of my everyday existence. Shall I tell them that maybe only one out of ten thousand men could have done my job because of the miracles that they expected me to perform? No slaves indeed! Welcome to my life.

Download or read book Adapting Idols Authenticity Identity and Performance in a Global Television Format written by Joost de Bruin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first series of Pop Idol aired in the UK just over a decade ago, Idols television shows have been broadcast in more than forty countries all over the world. In all those countries the global Idols format has been adapted to local cultures and production contexts, resulting in a plethora of different versions, ranging from the Dutch Idols to the Pan-Arab Super Star and from Nigerian Idol to the international blockbuster American Idol. Despite its worldwide success and widespread journalistic coverage, the Idols phenomenon has received only limited academic attention. Adapting Idols: Authenticity, Identity and Performance in a Global Television Format brings together original studies from scholars in different parts of the world to identify and evaluate the productive dimensions of Idols. As one of the world's most successful television formats, Idols offers a unique case for the study of cultural globalization. Chapters discuss how Idols shows address particular national or regional identity politics and how Idols is consumed by audiences in different territories. This book illustrates that even though the same television format is used in countries all over the globe, practices of adaptation can still result in the creation of unique local cultural products.

Download or read book Oh No Not The Home written by Peggy Rowe and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peggy Rowe is at it again, proving once more that great content is all around us, even in the retirement community she now calls "The Home." In Oh, No, Not “The Home,” eighty-three-year-old Peggy decides the time has finally come to move into a senior living facility with her husband, John, who follows his beloved bride . . . grudgingly. Once ensconced in "The Home," however, John quickly makes a long list of eclectic friends and takes up bocci ball, hatchet throwing, pool playing, and various other distractions that keep him mostly sane. Meanwhile, Peggy finds humor in places a normal person would never think to look—and laughter around every corner. Missing dentures? A mouse in the house? Nude sunbathing with an unexpected audience? Gluttony in the dining hall? A chair volleyball game that turns into geriatric target practice? It's all here. With her usual mix of warmth and irreverence, Peggy brings her daily journal to life with an unforgettable mix of observations and confessions, written with the honesty of a true observer of the human condition and the urgency of an embedded reporter entrenched in a strange and distant land. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and before long, you’ll start to think that Peggy and John and their many new friends are just the kind of people you wish you had for neighbors. Whatever you think you know about retirement communities, think again. This is life at "The Home." And it’s not exactly what the marketing brochure promised!

Book excerpt: The book you are about to read is destined to be the first, middle, and maybe even the last word on nonfiction writing for young, young children. It is certainly a text that you will return to over and over again as you do with a beloved cookbook. —from the Foreword by Tomie dePaola Over eighty- five percent of the reading and writing we do as adults is nonfiction, yet most of the reading and writing in K–3 classrooms is fiction or personal narrative. In Is That a Fact? Teaching Nonfiction Writing K-3, Tony Stead shows you how to open the door to the rich world of nonfiction writing that goes beyond what I did narratives and animal reports. And he convincingly demonstrates the importance of introducing nonfiction writing in the primary grades. Nonfiction inspires enthusiasm in young children because they can choose topics that are of interest to them personally. Is That a Fact? explores a variety of authentic purposes for writing nonfiction, such as describing, explaining, instructing, persuading, retelling, and exploring relationships with others. You will learn how to introduce each purpose using a variety of forms, including letters, reports, poetry, captions, directions, and interviews. Part One provides a complete overview of teaching nonfiction writing in the primary grades and includes: practical ways for organizing nonfiction resources within the classroom;how to assist children in collecting information for research;ideas for helping children keep their sense of voice when writing nonfiction;a chapter on spelling, with examples of how to guide students at each stage of spelling development;strategies for assessment and evaluation that guide teaching and learning engagements. Part Two provides five different explorations that were implemented in actual K–3 classrooms. Each focuses on a specific purpose for writing nonfiction and features:examples of whole-class, small-group, and independent instructional engagements;a comprehensive assessment rubric that will help teachers tailor instruction to the needs of all learners;an extensive resource section that includes lists of books in the exploration, grouped by readability levels;answers to the most commonly asked questions about teaching nonfiction writing. The appendixes include a self-assessment questionnaire, reproducible pages for exploring specific writing forms, and letters to parents. Children need to be introduced to the different purposes of nonfiction writing. They need to know how to plan, compose, revise, and publish nonfiction beyond narrative. Is That a Fact? guides you in achieving these goals with your students.
