Book excerpt: ROY ‘CHOPPER’ HARTLE ‘The backbone of the club’ - Gordon Taylor ‘Bolton Wanderers through and through and a legend’ - Andrew Dean, BWFC Promotions Manager ‘A gentleman off the pitch but so committed on it’ - Syd Farrimond Read the story of a man, the youngest of ten children, who became the toughest player in the Football League’s most fearsome defence and was reckoned by many to be the best right-back never to play for England. A man who was part of the team which lifted Bolton’s last major domestic trophy - the FA Cup - after a 2-0 triumph over Manchester United. A man who coached the manager who would later steer his team to World Cup Final victory. And a man who was proud to represent Bolton Wanderers at the opening of the new Wembley and one of only three BWFC legends to have part of the Reebok Stadium named after him. * Cover illustration by Walt Howarth, who wittily captures Roy’s distinctive playing style in this cartoon from 2000. Walt, a big Bolton fan, first became involved with the Wanderers by drawing players for the match-day programme from the mid-1940s onwards. He also provided the artwork for many children’s books in the 1950s and 1960s and is best remembered for the illustrations he did for the Doctor Who annuals. Walt, pictured with Eddie Hopkinson, Roy and Nat Lofthouse, died in 2008 aged eighty. His ashes are scattered on the Reebok pitch.

Book excerpt: Philip Nel takes a fascinating look into the key aspects of Seuss's career - his poetry, politics, art, marketing, and place in the popular imagination." "Nel argues convincingly that Dr. Seuss is one of the most influential poets in America. His nonsense verse, like that of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear, has changed language itself, giving us new words like "nerd." And Seuss's famously loopy artistic style - what Nel terms an "energetic cartoon surrealism" - has been equally important, inspiring artists like filmmaker Tim Burton and illustrator Lane Smith. --from back cover

Download or read book The Primordial Mind in Health and Illness written by Michael Robbins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The universal quest to create cosmologies – to comprehend the relationship between mind and world - is inevitably limited by the social, cultural and historical perspective of the observer, in this instance western psychoanalysis. In this book Michael Robbins attempts to transcend such contextual limitations by putting forward a primordial form of mental activity that co-exists alongside thought and is of equal importance in human affairs. This book challenges the western assumption that knowledge is synonymous with rational thought and that the aspect of mind that is not thought is immature, irrational, regressive and pathological. Robbins illustrates the central role of primordial mental activity in spiritual cultures analogous to that of thought in western culture as well as its significant contributions to numerous other phenomena including dreaming, language, creativity, shamanism and psychosis. In addition to his extensive clinical experience as a psychoanalyst Robbins draws on first-hand contact with Maori and other shamanistic cultures. Vividly illustrated by first and second hand accounts, this book will be of great interest to psychoanalysts, those with a psychological interest in spiritual cultures as well as those in the fields of developmental psychology, cultural anthropology, neuroscience, aesthetics and linguistics.
Download or read book John Ireland A Catalogue Discography and Bibliography written by Professor Stewart R Craggs and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Ireland (1879-1962) was one of the leading composers of the English Musical Renaissance at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century. Born of literary parents in Bowdon, near Manchester, he went to London at the age of fourteen to study at the newly-founded Royal College of Music where he eventually became a pupil of Charles Villiers Stanford. Among his near contemporaries at the College were Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Thomas Dunhill, William Y. Hurlstone, Henry Walford Davies and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Ireland is best known for his songs (such as Sea Fever, The Bells of San Marie and the cycle of Housman settings, The Land of Lost Content), his piano and chamber music, his church music and his relatively small number of choral, orchestral and brass band works. This catalogue of Ireland's compositions, a revised and enlarged edition of the one published in 1993 by the Clarendon Press (Oxford University Press), in association with the John Ireland Trust, lists his compositions from 1895 to 1961. Full details are given of dates of composition; people or bodies responsible for a work's commission; instrumentation; first performance; publications; location of the autograph manuscript; critical comment in the bibliography from the contemporary press and music journals, and recordings on compact disc. Appended is a general bibliography and classified index of main works. A list of personalia supplies details of people connected with Ireland and his music during his lifetime.

Book excerpt: Man of the Century is the often surprising story of how Winston Churchill, in the last years of his life, carefully crafted his reputation for posterity, revealing him to be perhaps the twentieth century's first, and most gifted, "spin doctor." Ramsden draws on fresh material and extensive research on three continents to argue that the statesman's force of personality and romantic, imperial notion of Britain has contributed directly to many of the political debates of the last decades--including American involvement in Vietnam and the role of the Anglo-American alliance in promoting and protecting a certain vision of world order.
