Book excerpt: Huckleberry, Wisconsin’s very own Amish matchmaking grandparents, eighty-somethings Anna and Felty Helmuth, continue to meddle into love lives—and bring faithful hearts together, in the USA Today bestselling author’s inspirational romance series. Will appeal to fans of Charlotte Hubbard, Amy Lillard, and Emma Miller. Sensible and cautious, Naomi Coblenz lives to help everyone else be happy—particularly when it comes to her twin sister, Ruth. So Omi certainly can’t admit she’s always loved handsome Bo Helmuth, since he and Ruth have begun courting. To look out for her sometimes-thoughtless sister, Omi even poses as Ruth on a ride home alone with Bo. But it doesn’t take Bo long to see the truth—and really notice Omi for the first surprising, hopelessly-wonderful time . . . Bo thought he was in love with the vivacious Ruth. But he can’t stop thinking about Omi’s kindness and understanding, especially since she refuses to hurt her sister. And he can’t figure out a way to tell Ruth they aren’t really suited for each other. His only hope is that his ever-resourceful Dawdi and Mammi can help faith guide the way—and at last claim a happy ending for all. “The lighthearted tone and witty banter amuse. Fans of Wanda Brunstetter will want to check this out.” --Publishers Weekly on The Amish Quiltmaker’s Unconventional Niece
Download or read book The Holy Longing written by Ronald Rolheiser and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ronald Rolheiser makes sense of what is frequently a misunderstood word: spirituality. In posing the question "What is spirituality?" Father Rolheiser gets quickly to the heart of common difficulties with the subject, and shows through compelling anecdotes and personal examples how to channel that restlessness, that deep desire, into a healthy spirituality. This book is for those searching to understand what Christian spirituality means and how to apply it to their own lives. Rolheiser explains the nonnegotiables--the importance of community worship, the imperatives surrounding social action, the centrality of the Incarnation, the sustenance of the spiritual life--and how spirituality necessarily impacts every aspect of human experience. At the core of this readable, deeply revealing book is an explanation of God and the Church in a world that more often than not doubts the credibility of both.
Download or read book Sh gun written by James Clavell and published by Blackstone Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 1483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss, and he is torn between two worlds that will each be forever changed. Powerful and engrossing, capturing both the rich pageantry and stark realities of life in feudal Japan, Shōgun is a critically acclaimed powerhouse of a book. Heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat action melds seamlessly with intricate historical detail and raw human emotion. Endlessly compelling, this sweeping saga captivated the world to become not only one of the best-selling novels of all time but also one of the highest-rated television miniseries, as well as inspiring a nationwide surge of interest in the culture of Japan. Shakespearean in both scope and depth, Shōgun is, as the New York Times put it, “...not only something you read—you live it.” Provocative, absorbing, and endlessly fascinating, there is only one: Shōgun.

Download or read book A Special Creation written by William P. Williams and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 1169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A little time travel story: Early in the 4th Millinnium AD, the earth is devastated by people in space, and in reprisal, earthling humanity destroys all the Solar System. However, there is a happy ending. The major protagonist goes "back in time" (actually going back in time is logically impossible of course) to guide and control the progress of science. We have chapters of history (the universe, human evolution, religion). People become so advanced that he is arrested and frozen, but he escapes in time for the final resolution of the great war. He is made (babies are not conceived and born in times to come, but designed and made and hatched from replication mechanisms) according to humanity's original design. The most people are hermaphroditic or sexless, but that's the way it is. He has no idea what he's in for when he enters a universe of people like him. He finds that he really likes sex, and the past doesn't regulate reproduction! He's like a god in the ancient past. Who's going to stop him?

Download or read book Where Are You From written by Barbara J. Fahrnbauber and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert Fahrnbauer vowed on his mothers deathbed that he would dedicate his life to the service of mankind, and chose Art, through portraiture. He set out to develop a new scientific system that inspired people through color matched to each personality a portrait that revealed a blueprint toward a radiant better life. Alberts vision is the center of his life. But he needs help. He marries with the understanding his wife Barbara will join him in developing his Science-Art. They will have no children. He wants her to join him every step of the way painting only with his system. She must abandon her free-spirited, messy way of painting. This is the story of where each of them came from, their different personalities and how their backgrounds inspired, damaged, and diverged throughout their lives together. Volume 1 Inspired by Albert, Barbara marries him without really understanding what he wants of her. It is 1952. They live in the east side tenement district in New York City, like walking backwards through time. There are no refrigerators. Blocks of ice, swung onto a mans back with a huge hook are delivered up three flights of stairs to an icebox for 25 cents. Volume 2 is the journey to Atlanta, Georgia, and buying a home-studio. Albert inherits $10,000 and buys a dairy farm. Volume 3 opens with joyous hope for life on their farm. They are burdened by debt and the failure of the dairy. They hoped their farm would be their Garden of Eden. So begins Alberts remorse over abandoning his vow to create a new system of art. Everything they try shrivels to dust. Even the maids they hire during the Christmas rush for portraits seem to have a lot to teach them, Barbara especially.
Download or read book Translation and Adaptation in Theatre and Film written by Katja Krebs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a pioneering and provocative exploration of the rich synergies between adaptation studies and translation studies and is the first genuine attempt to discuss the rather loose usage of the concepts of translation and adaptation in terms of theatre and film. At the heart of this collection is the proposition that translation studies and adaptation studies have much to offer each other in practical and theoretical terms and can no longer exist independently from one another. As a result, it generates productive ideas within the contact zone between these two fields of study, both through new theoretical paradigms and detailed case studies. Such closely intertwined areas as translation and adaptation need to encounter each other’s methodologies and perspectives in order to develop ever more rigorous approaches to the study of adaptation and translation phenomena, challenging current assumptions and prejudices in terms of both. The book includes contributions as diverse yet interrelated as Bakhtin’s notion of translation and adaptation, Bollywood adaptations of Shakespeare’s Othello, and an analysis of performance practice, itself arguably an adaptive practice, which uses a variety of languages from English and Greek to British and International Sign-Language. As translation and adaptation practices are an integral part of global cultural and political activities and agendas, it is ever more important to study such occurrences of rewriting and reshaping. By exploring and investigating interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives and approaches, this volume investigates the impact such occurrences of rewriting have on the constructions and experiences of cultures while at the same time developing a rigorous methodological framework which will form the basis of future scholarship on performance and film, translation and adaptation.

Download or read book Sabbath written by Wayne Muller and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2000-09-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's world, with its relentless emphasis on success and productivity, we have lost the necessary rhythm of life, the balance between work and rest. Constantly striving, we feel exhausted and deprived in the midst of great abundance. We long for time with friends and family, we long for a moment to ourselves. Millennia ago, the tradition of Sabbath created an oasis of sacred time within a life of unceasing labor. Now, in a book that can heal our harried lives, Wayne Muller, author of the spiritual classic How, Then, Shall We Live?, shows us how to create a special time of rest, delight, and renewal--a refuge for our souls. We need not even schedule an entire day each week. Sabbath time can be a Sabbath afternoon, a Sabbath hour, a Sabbath walk. With wonderful stories, poems, and suggestions for practice, Muller teaches us how we can use this time of sacred rest to refresh our bodies and minds, restore our creativity, and regain our birthright of inner happiness. Praise for Sabbath “Muller's insights are applicable within a broad spectrum of faiths and will appeal to a wide range of readers.”—Publishers Weekly “One of the best spiritual books of the year.”—Spirituality and Health “Wayne Muller's call to remember the Sabbath is not only rich, wise and poetic, it may well be the only salvation for body and soul in a world gone crazy with busyness and stress.”—Joan Borysenko, author ofMinding the Body, Mending the Mind and A Woman's Book of Life “This is a book that may save your life. Sabbath offers a surprising direction for healing to anyone who has ever glimpsed emptiness at the heart of a busy and productive life.”—Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., author of Kitchen Table Wisdom

Download or read book Obstacles Miracles Love written by Inge Fernbach Rabe and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-07-13 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inge Fernbach Rabe was born in Germany in 1924, nine years before Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. Her early childhood years were marked with love, laughter, and happiness. Early in 1933, her innocent and carefree world began to crumble. It began slowly, with name-calling. At first she didn’t know the meaning of the word “Jew.” Although her grandfather had been Jewish, Inge had been raised in a Christian family. Under the German laws of the time, she was considered half-Jewish, and therefore “racially impure.” Her family bore the full brunt of Nazi economic sanctions when her Papa’s business was ruined. Soon she was experiencing the pain of rejection when many of her friends were no longer allowed to play with her and the disappointment of being deprived of educational opportunities. Inge and her family endured difficulties that had previously been unthinkable. She was sustained through tragic circumstances by her loving mother and a deep faith in God as her Heavenly Father. She rejoiced when Allied forces finally liberated the people of Germany, and looked forward to building a new life. After struggling for ten years in post-war Germany, she decided to immigrate to the United States. Her new adventure began on April 4, 1955. As an immigrant she had to master a new language, learn new customs, earn a living, and catch up on her education! Although she often found herself in difficult circumstances, the kindness of the American people kept her going. Years later, happily married and with a son and daughter, she looked back on her struggles and thanked God for seeing her through to better times. Happiness doesn’t last forever, though. Her husband passed away unexpectedly, leaving her to care for two young children. Once again she would have to rely on faith and determination to survive. And once again she would discover that God’s blessings do arrive in the midst of hardship! Inge is retired now, and fills her days with gardening and writing.
Download or read book Small Feet on the Run written by Sieglinde Martin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You may know much about World War II, but did you ever wonder how children lived through this man-made disaster that killed twenty-nine million civilians in Europe? Read about eighteen ordinary children whose childhood changed due to extraordinary events not of their making. How did they make sense of their world? They collected and traded bomb shrapnel instead of baseball cards; instead of watching cartoons, they ran out in the morning to see what last night's bombs had destroyed; and boys played with live ammunition like your sons do with Fourth of July firecrackers. Read these true stories and share them with a friend. Ponder the bravery of the ten-year old girl traveling alone to her faraway home. Worry about the three-year-old watching her house burn. Cheer for the fearless boy who provides food for his family or wonder how it was possible that, in the middle of a large bombed-out city, a four-year-old brings a live chicken to her mother. These stories also talk about overwhelming fear, bottomless sadness, the heartwarming kindness of strangers and enemy soldiers, as well as childhood joys. At the end you may agree with the motto of the last chapter "Never Again War."
