Download or read book Happiness written by Jeffrey R. Di Leo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the ways in which happiness has been explored in philosophy and literature for thousands of years, in order to understand the newest theoretical approaches to happiness. Jeffrey R. Di Leo draws on its long and rich history as a window into our present obsession with happiness. Each of the four chapters of this book provides a substantially different literary-theoretical account of how and why literature matters with respect to considerations of happiness. From the neoliberal happiness industry and the psychoanalytic rejection of happiness to aesthetic hedonism and revolutionary happiness, literature viewed from the perspective of happiness becomes a story about what is and is not the goal of life. The multidisciplinary approach of this book will appeal to a variety of readers from literary studies, critical theory, philosophy and psychology and anyone with an interest in happiness and theories of emotion.
Download or read book Jurisprudence written by Wayne Morrison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This challenging book on jurisprudence begins by posing questions in the post-modern context, and then seeks to bridge the gap between our traditions and contemporary situation. It offers a narrative encompassing the birth of western philosophy in the Greeks and moves through medieval Christendom, Hobbes, the defence of the common law with David Hume, the beginnings of utilitarianism in Adam Smith, Bentham and John Stuart Mill, the hope for enlightenment with Kant, Rousseau, Hegel and Marx, onto the more pessimistic warnings of Weber and Nietzsche. It defends the work of Austin against the reductionism of HLA Hart, analyses the period of high modernity in the writings of Kelsen, Hart and Fuller, and compares the different approaches to justice of Rawls and Nozick. The liberal defence of legality in Ronald Dworkin is contrasted with the more disillusioned accounts of the critical legal studies movement and the personalised accounts of prominent feminist writers.

Download or read book Get Set Go Happy written by Nihar Mahapatra and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all want to be happy and we set various targets for ourselves in order to experience happiness. We need everything to be perfect in our lives: a good job, a good spouse, a good house, a good car, a good neighbour, a good boss and even a good fortune. The list is endless and our “happiness” is conditionally dependent on all these ‘good targets’ that we set for ourselves. But these ‘good targets’ often keep changing as we see a new car model on the road or a new model walking on the ramp. We chase happiness through these so-called ‘good targets’ and once we achieve these, the betters, the bests and the better than the bests become our next targets, making our happiness completely conditional. The challenge is how to stay happy in these scenarios. How to settle down? Where to settle down? What kind of targets should we set for ourselves so that we stay happy always? Anand (the hero of the book) has the answers. He has the skill for “Discovering happiness out of anything in life”. This book will take us on a happy ride with Anand and his unique experiments with life to get the best out of every moment. Let’s start the journey, on your marks... Get… Set… Go… Happy !!!
Download or read book Political Friendship and the Good Life written by G. Zanetti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main subject of this book is the rather fascinating link between an acceptable concept of political whole and its legal and moral implications. When we face this problem, we find that widespread categories like `happiness' and "friendship" are at the same time necessary and dangerous, crucial and elusive. In order to make the case against the so-called Legal Enforcement of Morals, and to grasp the complex relationship between law and morality from a liberal point of view, it is not enough to reject a pattern of happiness, or of human flourishing, from which to draw normative instructions for men and women - it must be recognized that integration of individuals in the comprehensive groups, as well as in the political whole itself, is not the only valuable option. The fragile value of a relative lack of integration, a "right to unhappiness", turns out to be, eventually, what makes the weak, but decisive, moral primacy of liberal societies.

Download or read book Rebuilding Fukushima written by Mitsuo Yamakawa and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five years after the one of the worst nuclear accidents in history, Fukushima now only occasionally headlines national and international media. However, the disaster is far from over, as evidenced by a hundred thousand people from Fukushima still in the state of evacuation, rising levels of radiation in streams and rivers, and failing attempts to control the leakage of radioactive materials at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Despite these dismal conditions, efforts to recover and rebuild livelihoods in the afflicted regions of Fukushima did start immediately after the outset of the accident. Rebuilding Fukushima gives an account of how citizens, local governments, and businesses responded to and coped with the crisis of Fukushima. It addresses principles to guide reconstruction and international policy environments in which the current disaster is situated. It explores how reconstruction is articulated and experienced at different spatial scales, ranging from individuals to communities and municipalities, and details recovery efforts, achievements, and challenges in the realms of public transportation, agriculture and food production, manufacturing industries, retail sectors, and renewable-energy industries. This book also critically investigates the nature of the current reconstruction policy schemes, and seeks to articulate what may be required in order to achieve more sustainable and equitable (re)development in afflicted regions and other nuclear host regions. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and local surveys, this volume is one of the first books in English that captures the knowledge and insights of native Japanese social scientists who dealt with the complexities of nuclear disaster on a day-to-day basis. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of disaster-management studies and nuclear policy.
