Book excerpt: One day, a man decides to create a new illustrated alphabet to help children learn the alphabet and how to read, but this greatly annoys the old illustrated alphabet! Was it not good enough for the children? Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author, poet and artist. Celebrated for children’s literature, his most cherished fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl". His books have been translated into every living language, and today there is no child or adult that has not met Andersen's whimsical characters. His fairy tales have been adapted to stage and screen countless times, most notably by Disney with the animated films "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and "Frozen", which is loosely based on "The Snow Queen", in 2013. Thanks to Andersen's contribution to children's literature, his birth date, April 2, is celebrated as International Children's Book Day.

Book Stories from Hans Andersen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories from Hans Andersen is a collection of short stories by Hans Andersen. was a Danish author well known for his fairytales. Excerpt: "In China, as you know, the Emperor is a Chinaman, and all the people around him are Chinamen too. It is many years since the story I am going to tell you happened, but that is all the more reason for telling it, lest it should be forgotten. The emperor's palace was the most beautiful thing in the world; it was made entirely of the finest porcelain, very costly, but at the same time so fragile that it could only be touched with the very greatest care. There were the most extraordinary flowers to be seen in the garden; the most beautiful ones had little silver bells tied to them, which tinkled perpetually, so that one should not pass the flowers without looking at them. Every little detail in the garden had been most carefully thought out, and it was so big, that even the gardener himself did not know where it ended. If one went on walking, one came to beautiful woods with lofty trees and deep lakes. The wood extended to the sea, which was deep and blue, deep enough for large ships to sail up right under the branches of the trees. Among these trees lived a nightingale, which sang so deliciously, that even the poor fisherman, who had plenty of other things to do, lay still to listen to it, when he was out at night drawing in his nets. 'Heavens, how beautiful it is!' he said, but then he had to attend to his business and forgot it. The next night when he heard it again he would again exclaim, 'Heavens, how beautiful it is!'"

Book Hans Christian Andersen

Download or read book Hans Christian Andersen written by Jackie Wullschlager and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002-06-15 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beloved by generations of children and adults around the world for tales such as "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Emperor's New Clothes," Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) revolutionized children's literature. Although others before him had collected and retold folk stories and fairy tales, Andersen was the first to create the stories himself, instilling a previously stilted genre with new humor, wisdom, and pathos. Drawing on letters, diaries, and other original sources (many never before translated from the Danish), Wullschlager shows in this compelling, extensively researched biography how Andersen's writings—darker and more diverse than previously recognized—reflected the complexities of his life, a far cry from the "happily ever after" of a fairy tale. As we follow in his footsteps from Golden Age Copenhagen to the princely courts of Germany and the villas of southern Italy, Andersen becomes a figure every bit as fascinating as a character from one of his stories—a gawky, self-pitying, and desperate man, but also one of the most gifted storytellers the world has ever known.

Book Tales and Stories by Hans Christian Andersen

Download or read book Tales and Stories by Hans Christian Andersen written by Hans Christian Andersen and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories that have delighted children and fascinated adults for over a century are the heritage of Hans Christian Andersen. This collection has been selected and translated with the growing audience of adults--both students and general readers--in mind, and displays the full range of Andersen’s authorship, from parable to science fiction. In this fresh, contemporary translation Rossel and Conroy have endeavored to “preserve for the English-speaking audience the engaging duplicity of Andersen’s style, the tension of play between his sympathetic conversational tone and his use of the studied effect.” This is a tension between the simplicity of stories intended to be read aloud to children ad the subtlety of the allegory skillfully woven into each for the adults who would be listening and “must have something to think about,” as Andersen said. The introductions provide an overview of Andersen’s life and struggle to become an author, as well as an analysis of his contributions as an artist and storyteller. Each story has also been provided with an endnote giving publication dates, information about the genesis of the tale, and relevant comments by Andersen and other. Readers who remember with nostalgia such tales as “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Little Match Girl” may be surprised to find the biting satire in many of the stories, such as “The Nightingale” and “The Gardener and the Lord and Lady,” the revealing self-portraits of the author in “The Sweethearts,” “The Butterfly,” and “The Shadow,” the mysticism of “The story of a Mother” and “The Bell” the prophetic quality of “In a Thousand Years Time,” and the complexity and charm of “the Snow Queen.” The book contains the drawings of Vilhelm Pedersen and Lorenz Frolich that originally appeared in the first illustrated Danish editions of Andersen’s tales and stories.

Book Hans Christian Andersen

Download or read book Hans Christian Andersen written by Elias Bredsdorff and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part of this sympathetic book the author traces the story of Andersen's extraordinary life and shows how often his tales grew out of his own experience. The second part of the book, a study of the tales themselves, will be a revelation to most people for, as the author says, Andersen has long been relegated to the nursery, and few adults realize the full extent of his wit, charm and sheer genius as a storyteller.
