Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One, two, three, fourI can never quite get to five. The highway is a frightening place to face my fears or to test if I even have any fears. The fact that I can never get past four seconds lets me know that I still care about my own life. The feeling of closing my eyes for those four seconds, I experience it all. I live my whole life in every second that goes by. It passes by like the cars that I speed past, with confused and concerned faces. So instead of counting past four, I write about what it feels like to sum up my life in just a couple seconds, or in this case, a couple poems that allow me to refuse those urges that I am still fighting: the demons of depression and anxiety that tightly grab a hold of me.

Book excerpt: Poetry. African & African American Studies. Latinx Studies. Art. This tÍte-bÍche (head-to-toe) book is more than the sum of its parts: two poetic accounts of Empire by two different writers. Assembled from Senate documents detailing the 1841 slave revolt aboard the brig Creole, Quenton Baker's we pilot the blood considers the position of blackness and the ongoing afterlife of slavery. Paul Hlava Ceballos's Banana [ ] collages declassified CIA documents, corporate reports, horticultural papers and personal accounts into a bloody portrait of multinational exploitation. Between these lyrical interrogations is a contemplative interval conducted by the writer and scholar Christina Sharpe in collaboration with Torkwase Dyson's Hypershapes.

From the powerful powwow in Baraga of April Lindala's "For the Healing of All Women" to the sex-charged basement in Stambaugh of Chad Faries's "Hotel Stambaugh: Michigan, 1977" to the splendor found between Newberry and Paradise in Joseph D. Haske's "Tahquamenon," readers will delight in discovering the work of both new and established authors. The contributors range widely in age, gender, and background, as The Way North highlights the work of established writers, teachers, students, laborers, fishermen, housewives, and many others. The Way North brings the U.P.'s literary tradition to the awareness of more readers and showcases some of the most compelling work connected to the area. Book excerpt: Life Lived In Color is a collection of poetry that make up pieces of my life that projects a rainbow of inspiration, love, lust, motherhood, struggles of being a Black woman and my faith. Excluding parts of who I truly am in order to please the masses only left me disfigured, so I have decided to share with you all aspects of my work, hoping that you understand that life is lived in many colors and to deny them only left me with a gray void. There are many aspects of my life that are encompassed in one person. I tried to group them together so for those of you that would like to skip over the "juicy parts" you can. But to deny that there are many facets to me being who I am would be to not only lie to myself but also lie to my loyal readers who expect to read the uncompromising truth when they read my work. I am asking that you take a journey with me as we travel a road of a life lived in color. There are inspiration poems, love poems and poems that are just down right gritty. This is me. This is poetry and very reason that I have been chosen. I chose to live my life in color! Please join me!

Book Little Terrarium

  • Pages : pages

Download or read book Little Terrarium written by Hannah Fries and published by . This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hannah Fries, former poetry editor of Orion, has worked with some of the nation's top poets, both in her graduate program at Warren Wilson, and as an editor. It shows in the confident, lyric voice of her debut volume, Little Terrarium. Her range, from giving human unsentimental voice to biblical women -- Mary, Noah's wife, a girl raised from the dead by Jesus -- to capturing Winslow Homer in words in a series devoted to his paintings, to attentive, fresh, surprising looks at our contemporary world, Fries doesn't shy away from what is emotionally true, but manages to do so in her own unique way. We're proud to offer these poems as our next publication.A mind and a mind's eye for art are evident on every page of this fine book. Beyond the beautiful, however, these poems also register a sharp regard for the natural world, for our hands-on knowledge of it, and for the plain fact that we are alive at a time when the natural world is most threatened. That is a practical predicament, but it is also a moral reality. To face the practical is a matter of will; to embrace the moral, as this book makes clear, is a matter of love. The love on these pages is human and searching--such is the love we need for art and the love we seek for wisdom." -- Maurice Manning
