Many of the trademark themes of modern and contemporary southern wit appeared in stories that circulated in the antebellum Southwest. Often taking the form of tall tales, those stories have served and continue to serve as rich, reusable material for southern writers and entertainers in the twentieth century and beyond. The Enduring Legacy of Old Southwest Humor is an innovative collaboration that delves into jokes about hunting, drinking, boasting, and gambling as it studies, among other things, the styles of comedians Andy Griffith, Dave Gardner, and Justin Wilson. Three decades later, the name would reappear as the title of a wildly popular television show, featuring essentially the same family of clownish mountaineers depicted in the long-running comic strip Li'l Abner. In 1972, the leering rapists in the film Deliverance would lend the hillbilly a darker and more threatening aura ("it did for North Georgians," said one journalist, "what Jaws did for sharks"). To this day, the portrayal of southern mountain people as at once comically and threateningly premodern and ignorant is one of the most pervasive images in American popular culture. She along with her best friend Leslie, an Eastern Airlines stewardess and American River whitewater guide, run into Robert, Kevin, and Benjamin at lunch in Big Sur. They meet again at Disneyland, where the girls are taking a break from surfing the pilings at the pier in Huntington Beach. During their time together, there is no mention of Aston's list or the name at the top of the list----President of the United States John F. Kennedy.
