Panicked, Hani blurts out that she’s in a relationship...with a girl her friends absolutely hate—Ishita "Ishu" Dey. Ishu is the complete opposite of Hani. She’s an academic overachiever who hopes that becoming head girl will set her on the right track for college. But Ishita agrees to help Hani, if Hani will help her become more popular so that she stands a chance of being elected head girl. Despite their mutually beneficial pact, they start developing real feelings for each other. But relationships are complicated, and some people will do anything to stop two Bengali girls from achieving happily ever after.

Book excerpt: 'This is an excellent portrayal of the Chris I knew. Not one word of exaggeration, so large was Chris. His contribution to our freedom is inestimable.' – Mavuso Msimang, ANC veteran and former member of the military high command of uMkhonto we Sizwe Chris Hani's assassination in 1993 gave rise to two of South Africa's greatest political questions. If he had survived, what impact would he have had on the ANC government? And could this charismatic man have risen to become president of the country? In the 30th anniversary year of his murder by right-wing fanatics, this updated version of the seminal biography of Hani re-evaluates his legacy and traces his life from his childhood in rural Transkei to the crisis in the ANC camps in the 1980s and the perilous last 36 months he spent back home rallying for South Africa's freedom. Drawing on interviews with those who knew him, this vividly written book provides a detailed account of the life of a hero of South Africa's liberation, who was both an intellectual and a fighter.

Book Chris Hani

Download or read book Chris Hani written by Hugh Macmillan and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography shows how Black political leader Chris Hani’s life and death were pivotal to ending apartheid and to establishing a democratic government in South Africa. Chris Hani is one of the most iconic figures in South Africa’s history, as a leader within the African National Congress (ANC) and as chief of staff of uMkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the ANC. His assassination in 1993 by a far-right militant threatened negotiations to end apartheid and install a democratic government. Serious tensions followed the assassination, leading Nelson Mandela to address the nation in an effort to avert further violence: Tonight I am reaching out to every single South African, black and white, from the very depths of my being. A white man, full of prejudice and hate, came to our country and committed a deed so foul that our whole nation now teeters on the brink of disaster. A white woman, of Afrikaner origin, risked her life so that we may know, and bring to justice, this assassin. The cold-blooded murder of Chris Hani has sent shock waves throughout the country and the world... Now is the time for all South Africans to stand together against those who, from any quarter, wish to destroy what Chris Hani gave his life for: the freedom of all of us. Hugh Macmillan’s concise biography details Hani’s important role in shaping twentieth-century South African history.

Book Rural Capitalist Development in The Jordan Valley

Download or read book Rural Capitalist Development in The Jordan Valley written by Mohamed F. Tarawneh and published by Sidestone Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The case of Deir Alla is a social and economic case study of developing Third World agriculture. The study is based upon historical sources, contemporary public information with statistics, and field work in the Jordanian village of Deir Alla. This fieldwork took place in 1986 and a report was prepared in 1989. For this publication additional field work in 1997 accounted for the rapidly changing social and economic situation. The Ottoman feudal system, with the local harrath (ploughman) economy, changed gradually to private ownership since 1936, affecting the social relations of production. From 1950 onwards this development was strongly influenced by a sudden population increase (Palestinian refugees), the East Ghor irrigation system, the strong promotion of vegetable production and new technologies and institutions. Share cropping became the dominant feature of agrarian relations, but during the last decades international migrant labour expanded the wage labour system. Some types of production organization, such as the small-owner-family-labour system, proved to be more successful than others, but with the current difficult economic situation the debt trap is felt by many of these small owners. The book is important for the understanding of the social and economic history of the region, showing the dynamics of social change, but also because of its thorough analysis of the current situation, assessing theoretical models and predicting developments in a rapidly changing agricultural world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a material and semiotic study of transnationalsim, analyzed in terms of race, class, gender, and sexuality. The objects of analysis range from the aftermath of the U.S.-led war in Iraq, to science fiction by Pat Cadigan, CJ Cherryh, and Samuel Delaney, to material-semiotic feminist theory by Donna Harraway, to the neo-Marxist historical geography of Mike Davis and David Harvey. The book is centrally concerned with the social and cultural change brought about by the rise of the new social movements in the United States, such as the women's movement and the lesbian, gay, queer, and transgendered movements, and the backlash by the American new right against this change. Ethical and political concerns are central to the arguments, which is framed in terms of Emmanuel Levinas's notion of radical, non-reciprocal responsibility. Laura Chernaik is a free-lance writer.
