But when an old friend named Wynn Pickett suspiciously dies out west, Bridger is forced to question many of the choices he's made in his life. Download or read book Broadcasting the Blues written by Paul Oliver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broadcasting the Blues: Black Blues in the Segregation Era is based on Paul Oliver's award-winning radio broadcasts from the BBC that were created over several decades. It traces the social history of the blues in America, from its birth in the rural South through the heyday of sound recordings. Noted blues scholar Paul Oliver draws on decades of research and personal interviews with performers--some of whom he "discovered" and recorded for the first time--to draw a picture of how the blues aesthetic developed, giving new insights into the role blues played in American society before racial integration. The book begins by outlining the history of the blues from African music through country stomps, ragtime songs, and field hollers. From the heroic figures of black folksong--including the steel-driving railroad worker John Henry and the destructive Boll Weevil--to the content of the emerging blues, the author discusses the "meaning" behind the often coded words of the blues, evoking topics such as playful sexuality, magic and medicine, the stresses of segregation, and commentary on national events. Finally, the author traces the history of blues documentation, showing how our views of the early blues have been shaped through a complex interplay of social forces, and indicating possible lines for future research.

Book How Britain Got the Blues The Transmission and Reception of American Blues Style in the United Kingdom

Download or read book How Britain Got the Blues The Transmission and Reception of American Blues Style in the United Kingdom written by Roberta Freund Schwartz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how, and why, the blues became a central component of English popular music in the 1960s. It is commonly known that many 'British invasion' rock bands were heavily influenced by Chicago and Delta blues styles. But how, exactly, did Britain get the blues? Blues records by African American artists were released in the United States in substantial numbers between 1920 and the late 1930s, but were sold primarily to black consumers in large urban centres and the rural south. How, then, in an era before globalization, when multinational record releases were rare, did English teenagers in the early 1960s encounter the music of Robert Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, Memphis Minnie, and Barbecue Bob? Roberta Schwartz analyses the transmission of blues records to England, from the first recordings to hit English shores to the end of the sixties. How did the blues, largely banned from the BBC until the mid 1960s, become popular enough to create a demand for re-released material by American artists? When did the British blues subculture begin, and how did it develop? Most significantly, how did the music become a part of the popular consciousness, and how did it change music and expectations? The way that the blues, and various blues styles, were received by critics is a central concern of the book, as their writings greatly affected which artists and recordings were distributed and reified, particularly in the early years of the revival. 'Hot' cultural issues such as authenticity, assimilation, appropriation, and cultural transgression were also part of the revival; these topics and more were interrogated in music periodicals by critics and fans alike, even as English musicians began incorporating elements of the blues into their common musical language. The vinyl record itself, under-represented in previous studies, plays a major part in the story of the blues in Britain. Not only did recordings shape perceptions and listening habits, but which artists were available at any given time also had an enormous impact on the British blues. Schwartz maps the influences on British blues and blues-rock performers and thereby illuminates the stylistic evolution of many genres of British popular music.

Book excerpt: The literary equivalent of a great dive bar jukebox--inspiring, provocative, irresistible, and the perfect gift for all music lovers. At the heart of all music fetishes, there are lists: ten essential female murder ballads, ten unsettling songs for a midwestern white guy to wake to from a coma, ten smutty Bob Dylan moments, and of course the ever-popular staple of all music lists (and listeners)--ten best breakup songs. Hang the DJ compiles what contributors might once have scribbled in the back of their textbooks or school folders, when they--like all of us at one point--were absolutely sure that they alone were the sole guardians of Musical Truth; that Sparks' number two hit, "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us," really should have made it to the number one spot, that Gary Numan was merely a misshapen progeny of Bowie's Thin White Duke persona, that female singer-songwriters are better than their male equivalents. Mixing anecdote, humor, reference, and sheer dorkiness--but with the bizarre insight of an anthropological study in pop-culture protocol--Hang the DJ is a collection of lists about musical loves, hates, dreams, and nightmares from music-lovers such as Rick Moody, Jonathan Lethem, Simon Reynolds, Ali Smith, Amanda Petrusich, and many other bloggers, journalists, novelists, poets, and musicians.

Book Billie Holiday

Download or read book Billie Holiday written by John Szwed and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Kirkus Best Books of 2015 selection for Biography • Published in celebration of Holiday’s centenary, the first biography to focus on the singer’s extraordinary musical talent When Billie Holiday stepped into Columbia’s studios in November 1933, it marked the beginning of what is arguably the most remarkable and influential career in twentieth-century popular music. Her voice weathered countless shifts in public taste, and new reincarnations of her continue to arrive, most recently in the form of singers like Amy Winehouse and Adele. Most of the writing on Holiday has focused on the tragic details of her life—her prostitution at the age of fourteen, her heroin addiction and alcoholism, her series of abusive relationships—or tried to correct the many fabrications of her autobiography. But now, Billie Holiday stays close to the music, to her performance style, and to the self she created and put into print, on record and on stage. Drawing on a vast amount of new material that has surfaced in the last decade, critically acclaimed jazz writer John Szwed considers how her life inflected her art, her influences, her uncanny voice and rhythmic genius, a number of her signature songs, and her legacy.

Book excerpt: THEY CALL IT "THE HANGMAN'S TREE". Everyone in Marfa, Texas, knows about the old madrone tree out on the Lacy ranch. Town lore says the tree's strange crimson bark is colored by the blood of thirteen men -- each of whom met his death by hanging from the tree's sturdiest branch. It's been years since the last lynching -- until local troublemaker Danny Lacy is discovered one blistering morning hanging dead from the tree, a hangman's knot around his neck. And now it's up to Texas Rangers Claude Groves and Carla Jenkins to find some answers. As Claude and Carla sift through dead-end clues and uncooperative witnesses, they learn that most folks in town suspect that Danny's murder was a simple case of a fight gone too far. But when the Rangers find a secret drug-making lab right in Danny's house, they know they're dealing with something much more complicated. And the answers they seek are closer than they realize. For somewhere in town, a silent witness is hiding what she knows -- from a killer who will stop at nothing to silence her....

Book The A to Z of African American Cinema

Download or read book The A to Z of African American Cinema written by S. Torriano Berry and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-09-02 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 4 July, 1910, in 100-degree heat at an outdoor boxing ring near Reno, Nevada, film cameras recorded-and thousands of fans witnessed-former heavyweight champion Jim Jeffries' reluctant return from retirement to fight Jack Johnson, a black man. After 14 grueling rounds, Johnson knocked out Jeffries and for the first time in history, there was a black heavyweight champion of the world. At least 10 people lost their lives because of Johnson's victory and hundreds more were injured due to white retaliation and wild celebrations in the streets. Public screenings received instantaneous protests and hundreds of cities barred the film from being shown. Congress even passed a law making it a federal offense to transport moving pictures of prizefights across state lines, and thus the most powerful portrayal of a black man ever recorded on film was made virtually invisible. This is but one of the hundreds of films covered in The A to Z of African American Cinema, which includes everything from The Birth of a Nation to Crash. In addition to the films, brief biographies of African American actors and actresses such as Sidney Poitier, James Earl Jones, Halle Berry, Eddie Murphy, Whoopi Goldberg, Denzel Washington, and Jamie Foxx can be found in this reference. Through a chronology, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, appendixes, black-&-white photos, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on actors, actresses, movies, producers, organizations, awards, film credits, and terminology, this book provides a better understanding of the role African Americans played in film history.

This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as 1909, African Americans were utilizing the new medium of cinema to catalogue the world around them, using the film camera as a device to capture their lives and their history. The daunting subject of race and ethnicity permeated life in America at the turn of the twentieth century and due to the effect of certain early films, specific television images, and an often-biased news media, it still plagues us today. As new technologies bring the power of the moving image to the masses, African Americans will shoot and edit on laptop computers and share their stories with a global audience via the World Wide Web. These independently produced visions will add to the diverse cache of African American images being displayed on an ever-expanding silver screen. This wide range of stories, topics, views, and genres will finally give the world a glimpse of African American life that has long been ignored and has yet to be seen. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of African American Cinema covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1400 cross-referenced entries on actors, actresses, movies, producers, organizations, awards, and terminology, this book provides a better understanding of the role African Americans played in film history. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about African American cinema.
