Book Reading and Writing in the Time of Jesus

Download or read book Reading and Writing in the Time of Jesus written by Allan Millard and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus never wrote a book. Most scholars assume that information about Jesus was preserved only orally up until the writing of the Gospels, allowing ample time for the stories of Jesus to grow and diversify. Alan Millard here argues that written reports about Jesus could have been made during his lifetime and that some among his audiences and followers may very well have kept notes, first-hand documents that the Evangelists could weave into their narratives.

When Isaiah was born she was illiterate, unemployed, and a crack addict. Giving up her son was the best thing for both of them—at the time. Now Selma has weaned herself off drugs, has a responsible job caring for another couple's child, and is learning to read. She's not rich and she doesn't live in the best neighborhood, but she's healed herself. Book excerpt: It was Easter of 1994, and the congregation of Plains Community Baptist Church was celebrating the completion of the new temple, this sixty-one-member rural church had sacrificed twenty years to build. During their worship service, amid a storm, a man dressed a vagrant, whom no one knew or had ever seen, entered the auditorium unannounced and then marched uninvited directly to the front. To their mutual bewilderment, the stranger announced he was a messenger of God. He told them, “Destroy this church, and on the third day, God will raise it up greater than you could ever imagine.” They promptly threw him out. But after suffering a series of haunting dreams, suggesting the stranger was truly sent by God, they reluctantly but unanimously agreed to do as they believed God had commanded—by burning their beloved temple to the ground. However, on the third day, thereafter, the temple was not restored as prophesied but rather remained in ashes. Instead, what happened next was far more miraculous and mysterious and truly beyond their greatest imagination. Messengers of Isaiah is about the limitlessness of faith, as experienced by one tiny backwoods church who dared to say yes to God when He called.

Isaiah Wilson is, on the surface, a town troublemaker, but is hiding that he is an avid reader and secret poet, never leaving home without his journal. Angel Hill is a loner, mostly disregarded by her peers as a goody-goody. Her father is dying, and her family’s financial situation is in turmoil. Though they’ve attended the same schools, Isaiah never noticed Angel as anything but a dorky, Bible toting church girl. Then their English teacher offers them a job on her mobile library, a three-wheel, two-seater bike. Angel can’t turn down the money and Isaiah is soon eager to be in such close quarters with Angel every afternoon. But life changes on May 31, 1921 when a vicious white mob storms the Black community of Greenwood, leaving the town destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. Only then, Isaiah, Angel, and their peers realize who their real enemies are.

Book Recovery Healing and Restoration Through Isaiah 54

Download or read book Recovery Healing and Restoration Through Isaiah 54 written by Edith A. Chillo and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day, seemingly from out of nowhere, through two dreams and a vision, God moves me to a setting under the Shadow of His Almighty Wings. From this peaceful place, God begins to heal me from pain and wounds I did not know I carried, and which over three decades and across three continents continuously held me in bondage. This past emanated from a breakup with a star soccer player in one of Kenya’s national soccer clubs. He was open to polygamy to be with me. As a Christian, I was not; we broke up. By that time, I had a daughter with him. She grew up knowing only the first name of her biological father and that he abandoned us. Beyond this, I never spoke about him and never thought about him. Unknown to me, I did not heal from the breakup. Three decades later, I received a visitation from God. Through the Holy Spirit talking to me as a person right next to me, Christ recovers this past I long buried, reveals to me how wounds from the breakup, unknown to me, tossed me from one complex relationship to another. Christ heals me from these pains, and then restores me to the knowledge and acceptance of the sufficient grace of God.

Book Isaiah Speaks Today

Download or read book Isaiah Speaks Today written by Elizabeth Seipel and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In every line of God's Word, there are volumes of wisdom and knowledge waiting to be revealed to His people. I believe that every book of the Bible has alternative meanings locked into them to put our Lord's wisdom into our hearts, while standing in its power timelessly. These do not negate, nor diminish, the obvious and literal meaning of the words of that book but are revelations into parallel meanings, revealed only through the Holy Spirit, much as Jesus did when speaking in parables or applying ancient Scripture to His time on earth. The book of Isaiah is a powerful Word which applied to the chosen people of that time, to the chosen people today, to the Gentile church of Jesus Christ, and to the nations of ancient times and these present times, which we are witnessing being brought low against the precepts of God by some of their leaders. It is up to the true Christian church in every nation to stand in obedience to our Lord, as the people of God worldwide join hands in the Holy Spirit and obey Him. It is my prayer that these messages will open the heart-doors of God's "peculiar people" ""the true church; each individual of which is chosen to be a spiritual leader in the true body of Christ, in the homes, communities, and nations of the world, through the power of the Holy Spirit, for such a time as this.

Book The Book of Isaiah

Download or read book The Book of Isaiah written by Henry Hardy and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2009 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of pen-portraits of the renowned public intellectual Isaiah Berlin, published to mark the centenary of his birth, brings him vividly to life from many vantage-points: essential reading for all who seek to understand the full range of his impact. Isaiah Berlin was born a century ago. One of the most celebrated British thinkers of the twentieth century, he was a tireless champion of freedom and diversity against control and conformity. His generous, open vision of life is displayed with special immediacy in his brilliant pen-portraits of contemporaries, Personal Impressions, in which he sees the point of radically differing personalities, enters into their distinctive outlooks, and describeshis encounters with them, in arrestingly idiosyncratic prose. The Book of Isaiah turns the tables on Berlin, offering a series of personal impressions of him and his ideas by a range of people who knew him, or have been affected by his work. This multi-faceted testimony enriches and supplements Michael Ignatieff's celebrated authorised biography. The volume includes tributes written when Berlin died, essays specially commissioned from friends and from students of his work, and a previously unpublished family memoir by Berlin's father, which preserves for his son, and for posterity, the story of his Hasidic forebears, and of the many relatives murdered by the Nazis. The result is a collection indispensable both for existing enthusiasts and for those who are curious to learn about Berlin's unique, compelling appeal. HENRY HARDY is a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford, and one of Isaiah Berlin's Literary Trustees.

Book The Birth mark Essays

Download or read book The Birth mark Essays written by Susan Howe and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan Howe's classic groundbreaking exploration of early American literature. In this classic, groundbreaking exploration of early American literature, Susan Howe reads our intellectual inheritance as a series of civil wars, where each text is a wilderness in which a strange lawless author confronts interpreters and editors eager for settlement. Howe approaches Anne Hutchinson, Mary Rowlandson, Cotton Mather, Hawthorne, Emerson, Melville and Emily Dickinson as a fellow writer—her insights, fierce and original, are rooted in her seminal textural scholarship in examination of their editorial histories of landmark works. In the process, Howe uproots settled institutionalized roles of men and women as well as of poetry and prose—and of poetry and prose. The Birth-mark, first published in 1993, now joins the New Directions canon of a dozen Susan Howe titles.

Book Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls

Download or read book Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls written by John Bergsma and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major new work on the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest sacred documents of Judaism, which reveals their surprising connections to early Christianity. “A luminous treatment of a fascinating subject! Highly recommended!”—Scott Hahn, author of The Fourth Cup From award-winning scholar John Bergsma comes an intriguing book that reveals new insights on the Essenes, a radical Jewish community predating Christianity, whose existence, beliefs, and practices are often overlooked in the annuls of history. Bergsma reveals how this Jewish sect directly influenced the beliefs, sacraments, and practices of early Christianity and offers new information on how Christians lived their lives, worshipped, and eventually went on to influence the Roman Empire and Western civilization. Looking to Hebrew scripture and Jewish tradition, Bergsma helps to further explain how a simple Jewish peasant could go on to inspire a religion and a philosophy that still resonates 2,000 years later. In this enriching and exciting exploration, Bergsma demonstrates how the Dead Sea Scrolls—the world's greatest modern archaeological discovery—can shed light on the Church as a sacred society that offered hope, redemption, and salvation to its member. Ultimately, these mysterious writings are a time machine that can transport us back to the ancient world, deepen our appreciation of Scripture, and strengthen our understanding of the Christian faith. “An accessible introduction . . . This is a handy entry point for readers unfamiliar with Essenes or those interested in the Dead Sea Scrolls.”—Publishers Weekly
