Book Handel Arias for Soprano in Baroque Pitch

Download or read book Handel Arias for Soprano in Baroque Pitch written by George Frideric Handel and published by . This book was released on 2012-07-02 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing 20 soprano arias from Handel's operas and oratorios, all transposed to be performed at baroque pitch when accompanied by a piano tuned to modern concert pitch. Now included are: Angels, ever bright and fair; Bel piacere; Care selve; Come and trip it; Endless pleasure; Here amid the shady woods; How beautiful are the feet; If God be with us; I know that my Redeemer liveth; Lascia ch'io pianga; Let the bright Seraphim; Mio caro bene; Non disperar; Oh! had I Jubal's lyre; O Sleep, why dost thou leave me; Piangero la sorte mia; Tornami a vagheggiar; Un cenno leggiadretto; V'adoro, pupile; Voi mi dite. These arias, which have been transposed and revised from the material available on the Schubertline.co.uk website by the editor, John Nicholson, are presented here a semitone lower than Handel's original keys. In performance they will sound, as Handel probably intended them to sound - at what is nowadays called 'modern baroque pitch' (A=415Hz), rather than modern concert pitch (A=440Hz).There was no universal standard of pitch in the 18th century: a tuning fork used by Handel from 1740 is set to A=422.5Hz, although another from 1780 is almost a semitone lower still. As Handel did not intend his music to be sung at modern concert pitch, the transpositions available in this volume will allow singers to rehearse at baroque pitch when accompanied by a modern piano.

Book Bach Arias for Soprano in Baroque Pitch

Download or read book Bach Arias for Soprano in Baroque Pitch written by Johann Bach and published by . This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this collection of soprano arias by Bach, the music has been transposed down a semitone from the original keys, to allow singers to rehearse at baroque pitch (A = 415 Hz) when accompanied by a modern piano tuned to concert pitch (A = 440 Hz). Although there was no fixed standard of pitch in the 18th century, it was certainly lower (sometimes considerably so) than modern concert pitch, and there is no doubt that vocal music of the period sits more comfortably on both ear and voice when sung at baroque pitch. This selection of arias includes most of the well known soprano solos from the great choral works, plus some of the frequently sung arias from the cantatas. The music has been chosen from scores available on the Schubertline website, but the arias have been extensively re-edited with reference to urtext sources. Tempo and dynamic markings are original unless shown within square brackets.

Book An Early Hautboy Solo Matrix

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Hedrick
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2015-02-05
  • ISBN : 1443874930
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book An Early Hautboy Solo Matrix written by Peter Hedrick and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest surviving hautboy solo is a Symphonia by Johann Christoph Pez from the 1690s or early 1700s. This piece survives in two versions, as a Sonata for violin and a Symphonia for hautboy, and the differences between the two enable a comparison of how Pez viewed the character and technical capabilities of each instrument. The purpose of this edition is to show how Pez’s Symphonia can be used as a template to find other works that might become hautboy solos (treble/bass) from the last third or so of the seventeenth century when the instrument came into use. Thus Pez points the way to a seventeenth-century practice that the author demonstrates in four contemporary pieces by writing out examples of what would have been performed at sight or from memory. Adaptations like this of J. S. Bach’s keyboard works are being performed by some of today’s leading lutenists. This book will make a significant addition to academic libraries and will be of interest to scholars of historical performance practice and to performers of the (baroque) hautboy, the oboe and other wind instruments. It breaks new ground in the same spirit as studies that have offered reconstructions of works with lacunae in scoring or with damaged pages.
