Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a pleasure to have the privilege of writing the foreword for a book edited by Dr. Francis F. Foldes. Dr. Foldes has collected in one convenient place a discussion and description of enzyme systems of use to the anesthesiologist and to those other individuals, such as undergraduate and graduate students in related basic sciences, who will profit by and can make use of this body of information. The practicing anesthesiologist and those who work in related fields have become increasingly aware of the need to understand enzyme activities which influence the uptake, distribution, and excretion of those substances that are used in the anesthetic management of surgical patients. A variety of such is obvious when one considers that such diverse substances as activities and muscle re analgesic drugs, tranquilizers, hypnotics, anesthetic agents, laxants are strongly affected by these systems and have an influence over the basic understanding of how these drugs operate and act in the body, as well as providing a safety measure so necessary to the proper conduct of clinical anesthesia. The editor and his colleagues have rendered us a great service in collecting information that deals with the basic activity of enzymes including their structure, their kinetics, and to the degree that knowledge permits, mechanism of actions.

Book Cholinesterases and Anticholinesterase Agents

Download or read book Cholinesterases and Anticholinesterase Agents written by George B. Koelle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the anticholinesterase (anti-ChE) agents have only limited applica tions in therapy, and from the viewpoint of practical significance they are more appropriately classified as toxic compounds or insecticides than as drugs, in their capacity of pharmacological tools they have few equals. The concept of neuro humoral transmission was originally established largely from experiments in which physostigmine, or eserine, was employed to protect acetylcholine (ACh), the trans mitter of the cholinergic nerves, from rapid hydrolytic destruction by acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) and other cholinesterases (ChE's). Since then, a great num ber of additional reversible and irreversible anti-ChE agents also have been indis pensable in studies of synaptic and neuroeffector transmission, and of other physiological processes. At the same time, there is practically no other class of compounds for which a mechanism of pharmacological action can be described in such concrete biochemical and physiological terms. Consequently, it is not sur prising that a huge literature has developed on these several closely interdependent topics. The assembling anrl proper correlation of this material for the present volume has taken the collaborative efforts of over two dozen . investigators. It iR believed that their contributions to this end will prove invaluable to future in vestigators in providing a ready, inclusive source of established information, in defining areas where further studies are indicated, and in preventing unnecessary duplication of past work. How well these aims have been accomplished will be for time and the reader to judge.

Book Ultracentrifugation in Biochemistry

Download or read book Ultracentrifugation in Biochemistry written by Howard K. Schachman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultracentrifugation in Biochemistry discusses the fundamental aspects of ultracentrifugation. The book begins with a sketch of the field, highlighting some of the principal developments. Following this is a chapter that discusses ultracentrifugation in general terms and describes the division of the field into three major areas. The subsequent chapter deals with developments of the experimental aspects of the field such as improvements in the instrument itself, cells, rotors, measurement, and control of temperature, and the various optical systems. The remainder of the book discusses the fundamental principles of sedimentation velocity, transient states, and sedimentation equilibrium. A section is also included which deals with interpretation of sedimentation data in terms of hydrodynamic models, charge effects, and interactions in multicomponent systems. This book is likely to become an indispensable companion to the laboratory worker who is planning and conducting an ultracentrifuge run for almost any purpose. It should also be of fundamental value to the thoughtful student or investigator who wants to know the present state of knowledge in the field, both experimental and theoretical.

Book Perception and Motor Control in Birds

Download or read book Perception and Motor Control in Birds written by Mark N.O. Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being both broad - perception and motor organization - and narrow - just onegroup of animals - at the same time, this book presents a new unified framework for understanding perceptuomotor organization, stressing the importance of an ecological perspective. Section I reviews recent research on a variety of sensory and perceptual processes in birds, which all involve subtle analyses of the relationships between species' perceptual mechanisms and their ecology and behaviour. Section II describes the variousresearch approaches - behavioural, neurophysiological, anatomical and comparative - all dealing with the common problem of understanding how the activities of large numbers of muscles are coordinated to generate adaptive behaviour. Section III is concerned with a range of approaches to analyzing the links between perceptual and motor processes, through cybernetic modelling, neurophysiological analysis, and behavioural methods.

Book Protein Sequence Determination

Download or read book Protein Sequence Determination written by Saul B. Needleman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All the King's horses and all the King's mm couldn't put Humpty Dumpty together again." It is entirely possible that the difficulty facing "all the King's men" was principally the lack of a sufficient guide to the techniques of reassembling from a series of small components, the original entity. It is the sincere hope of the editor of the present work and of each of the contributing authors that the modern researcher will not face a similar predicament in his endeavours to reconstruct the complete primary sequence of a protein from the array of component amino acids. Rather, it is the intent that, with this volume, he may proceed untimorously if not with outright confidence toward achieving his purpose. To the newcomer in protein sequencing, compelled by necessity, or fascination, to investigate the exact order of amino acids in proteins, the question of "where to begin" - or "how to do it" is urgent. To those more skilled, a ready source of additional techniques should nevertheless be of value. This volume attempts to present in a single source a discussion of the methods and techniques useful to the determination of the primary structures of proteins and peptides. Hopefully, this book will tell the reader "how to do it".

Book Chemical and Molecular Basis of Nerve Activity

Download or read book Chemical and Molecular Basis of Nerve Activity written by David Nachmansohn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical and Molecular Basis of Nerve Activity contains 16 chapters that discuss the significant advances in the study of the molecular events underlying bioelectricity and nerve excitability. After briefly describing the physiology and mechanisms of the nervous system, this book goes on examining the physiologically significant features and nerve activity roles of acetylcholines and acetylcholinesterase. A chapter highlights the mechanism of acetylcholinerase inhibition by nerve gases and insecticides. Other chapters explore the characteristic properties of choline acetylase enzyme; the relationships between chemical forces and electrical activity; and the effect of acetylcholine and analog compounds on the isolation of receptor protein and on synaptic junctions. The remaining chapters deal with the essential role of acetylcholine in the generation of bioelectric current and the differences between axonal conduction and synaptic transmission. The supplementary texts look into the progress in the biochemistry of excitability and present an integral model of nerve excitability. This book will be of great benefit to biologists and neurologists.
