Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canterbury As we stand upon the summit of Bell Harry Tower - more happily called the Angel Steeple of Canterbury Cathedral, looking down upon city and countryside, much of the history of England lies spread beneath our feet: the Britons were at work here before the Romans came marching with their stolid legions here to Ethelbert, Saxon King of Kent, St Augustine preached the gospel of Christ; in the church below, Becket was murdered and the Black Prince buried; to this city, to the shrine of St Thomas, came innumerable pilgrims, one of them our first great English poet; then the crash of the Reformation swept away shrines and pilgrims, the mirk and romance of mediaeval ism vanished into the mists of history, and the city to-day lives chiefly in the past. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Walk in and About the City of Canterbury: With Many Observations Not to Be Found in Any Description Hitherto Published The very favourable reception this work has always met with, and the fact that it has been for some time out of print, although much sought after by the public, have induced the Publisher to undertake to print an edition of it still more perfect than either of the preceding ones, by interspersing with the history those various occurrences and improvements which have taken place since the last edition issued from the press. This book is indeed a true characteristic of the very excellent disposition of its author, who at all periods of his life, during his residence within the precincts of the Cathedral, found the greatest satisfaction in rendering this city and its environs worthy the attention of travellers; and however incapable some of them might he of deriving pleasure from these venerable antiquities, yet from his cheerfulness and hospitality he insured to himself universal respect and esteem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address to the Electors of the City of Canterbury It is a notion I fear, too frequently received among the labouring part of my Fellow-citizens, that the choice of members to represent us in parliament, is a matter of no material consequence to them. An opinion of this kind strongly imbib'd makes the heart easy of access, and the first warm solicitation to those who are above accepting a bribe for their vote, seldom fails of securing a promise; yet they all know we are called a free people, and though they may not consider the source from whence our freedom sprung, the blessings we enjoy from it, the means by which it must be supported, and the methods that may be taken to destroy it; they value themselves as true born Englishmen and cry aloud for liberty and property. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canterbury: A Historical and Topographical Account of the City IN 1884, the year after his translation from Truro to Canterbury, I was asked by Dr. Edward White Benson to write a Short history of the City of Canter bury, as the Archbishop was not able to lay his hands on any one book that gave the information that many desired to have. Such a request I regarded almost as a command, more especially as Dr. Benson had rendered me much kindly service at the time when he was Chancellor of Lincoln, and when I had occasion to frequently consult the chapter muniments of that minster. The project, however, through stress of other work, got no further than a scheme of procedure, which was submitted to the Archbishop and met with his approval, and the collection of some material. Since that time the local guide-books have materi ally improved, and the idea of this small book had been abandoned, until - nearly twenty years after - my friend Professor Windle, in arranging a series of books on Old English towns for Messrs. Methuen, asked me to undertake the volume on Canterbury. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canterbury: Official Guide to the Cathedral Church and Handbook to the City May notice that a large number Of houses follow this type, though naturally the warehouse has been turned into a living room. On the left is the church of S. Peter, which for many years was neglected and disused, It is now worked chiefly by members Of S. Augustine's College, to whose energy its restoration is due. This has been carried out wisely and not too well, and leaves the curiously irregular architecture to tell its own story This is plain enough and interesting enough for the lover of church architecture to read without assistance, but his attention should be called to the oolite quoins of the tower, and to the tiles which are built into the substance Of it. The tiles are probably, and the oolite very possible, Roman material. We Shall find instances of both in other places, notably in S. Mildred's Church (see sec. A few yards further a street, still called The Friars, leads to the left. Here stood one of the gates leading to the house Of the Black Friars, or Dominicans (see sec. This was the first house established by this order in England after their arrival in 1220. Almost opposite, just beyond the Wesleyan Chapel a narrow path to the right leads to the remains of the house of the great rival Order of the Grey Friars or Franciscans. Of this there still exists an interesting house built over the river, and parts Of the boundary walls in the adjacent gardens. East bridge.
