Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of South Australia Some idea of the vastness of the Australian Continent may be gathered from the above map, which shows that Australia could swallow up nearly the whole of Europe. Drawn to scale, without alteration of their positions, with the exception of Sweden, Norway, and Russia, there is a balance (the black portion) which would provide for Sweden and Norway, and for more than two-thirds of Russia. For further comparison study the areas given below. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Australia: A Sketch of Its History Resources, a Handbook This Handbook has been prepared by instructions from the South Australian Commissioners for the use of visitors to the Colonial and London Exhibition in London during the present year. When honored with the task of preparing a Handbook, I was instructed to compile such a work as would enable a person who contemplated emigrating to South Aus tralia to obtain, as he rode home from the Exhibition, some general idea of the country to which he wished to go. Necessarily, therefore, the information supplied is given in general terms. I have assumed the possession of some prior knowledge of South Australia on the part of those into whose hands this book may come, and have endeavored mainly to give information on those matters which would be sought for by intending emigrants. In the hope that this Handbook may prove of interest to all who read it, and may be specially helpful to those who contemplate settlement in one of the Australian Colonies, it is now submitted to the public. An International Exhibition is to be held in Adelaide in June, 1887, to celebrate the jubilee of the foundation of the Colony as a British Province, and to commemorate, also, the completion of the fiftieth year of the reign of Her Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria. This record of what the Colony has achieved will, it is hoped, be of service to manufacturers in Europe, America, and elsewhere, who may see in the Exhibition a favorable opportunity of placing their goods before the Australasian public, and, in the expanding trade of the Australasian Colonies, an inducement to open up these promising channels of commerce. Apart from the oflicial aid which has been received by the author in the execution of his work, he is indebted to many friends and others for useful suggestions and valuable information, of which he has been glad to avail himself. They are too many to be indicated by individual names, but it is hoped that they will kindly accept the grateful and sincere. Book Bibliography of South Australia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bibliography of South Australia Classic Reprint written by Thomas Gill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliography of South Australia In the Appendix an attempt has been made to furnish a list of all colonial newspapers which have appeared at various times, but it is found impossible to complete the list in detail. As will be observed by a perusal of that division, many newspapers had but an ephemeral existence, and consequently no files of some are known to exist. To Messrs. G. Gerrard Shaw, H. Hampson, and S. E. Roberts I am indebted for much information on this subject. It is to be regretted that some legislation was not passed in the early days of the colony, enforcing the lodgment in the South Australian Institute of a copy of every colonial publication - work, pamphlet, or newspaper. Owing to the absence of a compulsory law on this subject, we have now to deplore the loss of most valuable information concerning the early detailed history of the colony, and no effort appears to have been made until recent years, by the governing powers of the South Australian Institute to collect or pre serve colonial publications. But much omitted herein may still exist in private bookshelves, boarded up, either through curiosity or on account of old associations. Colonists and others possessing such documents will confer a favor upon the compiler by acquainting him of such fact. The Public Library and the Library of the South Australian Geographical Society would be greatly benefited by dona tions of any documents antecedent to 1870. Book A Handbook of the Flora of Extratropical South Australia

Download or read book A Handbook of the Flora of Extratropical South Australia written by Ralph Tate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Flora of Extratropical South Australia: Containing the Flowering Plants and Ferns This work is intended for those who have mastered the elements of botany and who wish to be acquainted, as rapidly and readily as may be, with the name and systematic position of any our of Native Plants. It is purposely kept brief, and, though too abridged to serve as a sole source of information, yet it is issued to meet the need of a handy work of reference, since the Flora Australiensis is too bulky and too expensive. The plan of the Key is adopted chiefly from the Flora Australiensis, and a little practice will suffice to enable the tyro to make use of it, especially if he select at first a few known species. "The student having a plant to determine, will first take the general table of Natural Orders, and examining his plant at each step to see which alternative agrees with it, will be led on to the Order to which it belongs. If it agrees, he will follow the same course with the table of the genera of that Order, and again with the table of species of the genus. But in each case, if he finds that his plant does not agree with the description of the genus or species to which he has been referred, he must revert to the beginning and carefully go through every step of the investigation before he can be satisfied. A fresh examination of his specimen, or of others of the same plant, a critical consideration of the meaning of every expression in the characters given, may lead him to detect some minute point overlooked or mistaken, and put him into the right way. Species vary within limits which is very difficult to express in words, and it proves often impossible, in framing these analytical tables, so to divide the genera and species, that those which come under one alternative should absolutely exclude the others; in such doubtful cases both alternatives must be tried." Bentham. Special attention is directed to the characters printed in italics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Australia in 1887: A Handbook for the Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition; With Introduction by Sir Samuel Davenport, K. C. M. G., LL. D South Australia was not the offshoot from another colony. It was a distinct and independent individual; not a cutting nor a layer, but with roots and stem and branches, it had its own complete and compact being. Besides, it had novelties in its composition. It was the exponent of a new theory of colonization evolved by Edward Gibbon Wakefield. Nature gave the land, and the sale of this was to supply the capital for the introduction of labor necessary to raise the wealth from it which should provide for its future life. In anticipation of the funds to be thus ultimately acquired from land, a sufficient loan had been authorised by the mother country. So at its birth, a fresh response was given to the prayer of the great Milton, who, in 1641, implored that that Divine Power which had built up the Britannic Empire to a glorious a'nd enviable height, with all her daughter islands about her, would stay us in this felicity and an additional illustration was started of Penn's theory who said that colonies are the seeds of nations. Begun and nourished by the care of wise and populous countries. In 1832 there was a great want of employment in England, and a not inconsequent desire amongst all classes for emigration.
