Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Ship Calculations, Construction and Operation, a Book of Reference for Shipowners, Shi'p, Officers, Ship and Engine Draughtsmen: Marine Engineers, and Others Engaged, in the Building and Operating of Ships This handbook has been compiled with the purpose of assembling in a single publication in convenient form, practical data for everyday reference, for men engaged in the designing, building and operating of ships. Theoretical calculations have been purposely omitted. Shipowners and men in the offices of steamship companies will find particular interest in the sections on Loading and Stowing of Cargoes, Maintenance, Ship Chartering, and Marine Insurance. To men employed in shipyards the sections on Ship Calculations and Hull Construction, Structural Details, Machinery, and Ship Equipment, and the various formulae for making quick calculations will be of use. In making preliminary designs the section on Hull and Machinery Weights, as also the tables giving particulars of all classes of vessels, will be found convenient. Ship officers and marine engineers will find, in the section on Machinery, valuable data on the overhauling of boilers, on indicator cards, on the operating of pumps, condensers and motors, and many other practical subjects: They will find useful also the sections on Loading and Stowing of Cargoes, Ship Machinery, and many other subjects. Marine underwriters, ship brokers and freight brokers will find convenient data on ship construction and the stowage sizes of materials, with a large number of miscellaneous tables. For men engaged in the designing and building of war vessels a section on warships has been included, which describes. the different classes and their armor and armament. Although the fundamental calculations for all vessels, merchant and war, are the same, the text contains frequent special references to warships, as on the subject of electric propulsion, electric steering gears, electric winches, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Ship Construction and Calculations

Download or read book Ship Construction and Calculations written by George Nicol and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ship Construction and Calculations: With Numerous Illustrations and Examples, for the Use of Officers of the Mercantile Marine, Ship Superintendents, Draughtsmen, Etc It is hoped the book will be found useful by officers of the Mercantile Marine, ship superintendents, draughtsmen, and shipyard apprentices, to all' of whom a more or less intimate knowledge of naval architecture is essential. To the officer mariner the subject may now be said to be a compulsory one, in that those who wish to qualify for the certificate of extra master must pass an examination in it. But besides this, there are other good reasons why an officer should know something regarding the construction and theory of ships. For instance, it would enable him, if called upon, to act as inspector on behalf of his employers at the building of a new vessel or the repair of an old one. Or, if his vessel were to receive sudden damage, calling for immediate temporary repairs, it would give him confidence in directing his crew in the carrying out of these. In the management of his vessel afloat, a knowledge of simple theory would assist him at any time to arrive quickly at satisfactory conditions of draught, trim and stability, unattainable by mere guess-work or a system of trial and error. In other ways also such knowledge would prove useful. The examples chosen for illustration throughout the book have been selected for their practical interest, and every effort has been exerted to make the explanations simple. In conclusion, the author begs to thank Messrs. J. L. Thompson Sons, Ltd., Sunderland, for their kind permission to publish diagrams and results of calculations of vessels built by them; and he also desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. W. Thompson, e.sc., for help in reading the proof sheets, and in verifying the examples, as well as for other valuable assistance rendered while the work was passing through the press. Book Present Day Shipbuilding

Download or read book Present Day Shipbuilding written by Thomas Walton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Present-Day Shipbuilding: A Manual for Students and Ships' Officers for Their Respective Examinations; Ship-Superintendents, Surveyors, Engineers, Shipowners, and Shipbuilders; Being Chapter III., IV., Vi;, VII. Of "Steel Ships," Revised, Enlarged, and Specially Arranged, With Tes The present volume is, in a large measure, the outcome of the gratifying reception with which the smaller work, "Know your Own Ship," published in the Nautical Series, met on its first and subsequent editions. The success of that book emboldened its Author to embark, at the suggestion of the publishers, upon the preparation of a larger and more important undertaking, the result of which is now presented to the reader in the hope that it will be found, not less than the former work, to merit the approval of that section of the shipbuilding world for whose needs it has been specially devised. A sketch of the plan of the book will be found at the end of this preface; it is therefore unnecessary here to do more than briefly outline the circumstances under which it has been written. The work has taken four years to complete, the Author having been unable to devote more than his leisure hours to its composition. A careful study of some years' duration, carried out in that centre of the steel trade, the Cleveland district, has afforded the necessary basis for the first two chapters, while the subsequent chapters are the result of the Author's daily experience in the profession of ship construction and maintenance. The book has been copiously illustrated, and no expense has been spared in the preparation and execution of diagrams intended to amplify and elucidate the text. These have been placed in close juxtaposition to those portions of the work to which they refer, the Author conceiving that they will thus prove more readily available for purposes of reference than if they had been published as a separate volume, as is sometimes done in works of this class. The whole subject has been treated from a practical point of view, and the requirements of students, ship superintendents, shipbuilders, and marine engineers have been carefully studied.
