BLUE BOOK OF Oil Burning and Burners HEAT AND COMBUSTION When we speak of fuel oil we generally mean the oil which is burned in the furnaces of steam boilers. The best engineer is the one who can make the most steam with the least fuel. Heat may be produced in many ways, but for the purpose of the marine engineer it is only necessary to consider the heat generated in the furnace by burning fuel oil and coal. The degree or intensity of heat can be measured by a thermometer or pyrometer. The quantity of heat necessary to produce a certain temperature is measured in heat units. The British Thermal Unit (B.T.U.) is 1/180 of the amount of heat necessary to raise one pound of water from a temperature of 320 F to 2120 F. Roughly one B.T.U. will raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree. Above 2120, water is changed into steam, by the addition of heat and the above definition is not true of steam. The best fuels contain the most B.T.U.'s per 1 pound. The average good steaming coals contain between 11,000 and 14500 B.T.U.'s per pound, while fuel oils contain as high as 20,000 B.T.U.'s per pound. Unfortunately, there is no quick practical method by which the engineer can judge of the quality of his fuel. The number of heat units per pound must be determined in a laboratory with an instrument called a calorimeter, and to be of any value the test must be very carefully 'and accurately made. Consequently the engineer must judge of the quality of his fuel by its actual performance in his furnace. But a knowledge of the fundamental principles of heat and combustion cannot fail to help in saving at the fuel pile. Heat is generated by combustion, or the burning of coal or oil in the furnace. Coal and fuel oil consist principally of carbon, ..

Book The Burning Question

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mike Berners-Lee
  • Publisher : Greystone Books
  • Release : 2013-09-21
  • ISBN : 1771640081
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Burning Question written by Mike Berners-Lee and published by Greystone Books. This book was released on 2013-09-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Burning Question reveals climate change to be the most fascinating scientific, political and social puzzle in history. It shows that carbon emissions are still accelerating upwards, following an exponential curve that goes back centuries. One reason is that saving energy is like squeezing a balloon: reductions in one place lead to increases elsewhere. Another reason is that clean energy sources don't in themselves slow the rate of fossil fuel extraction. Tackling global warming will mean persuading the world to abandon oil, coal and gas reserves worth many trillions of dollars — at least until we have the means to put carbon back in the ground. The burning question is whether that can be done. What mix of politics, psychology, economics and technology might be required? Are the energy companies massively overvalued, and how will carbon-cuts affect the global economy? Will we wake up to the threat in time? And who can do what to make it all happen?

Book Burning the Midnight Oil

    Book Details:
  • Author : Phil Cousineau
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2013-12-16

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Burning the Midnight Oil, word-wrangler extraordinaire Phil Cousineau has gathered an eclectic and electric collection of soulful poems and prose from great thinkers throughout the ages. Whether beguiling readers with glorious poetry or consoling them with prayers from fellow restless souls, Cousineau can relieve any insomniac's unease. From St. John of the Cross to Annie Dillard, Beethoven to The Song of Songs, this refreshingly insightful anthology soothes and inspires all who struggle through the dark of the night. These "night thoughts" vividly illustrate Alfred North Whitehead's liberating description of "what we do without solitude" and also evoke Henry David Thoreau's reverie, "Our truest life is when we are in dreams awake." The night writers in Cousineau's vesperal collection range from saints, poets, and shamans to astronomers and naturalists, and tells of ancient tales and shining passages from the most brilliant (albeit insomniac) writers of today. These poetic ponderances sing of the falling darkness, revel in dream-time, convey the ache of melancholy, conspire against sleeplessness, vanquish loneliness, contemplate the night sky, rhapsodize on love, and languorously greet the first rays of dawn. Notable night owls include Rabandranath Tagore, Mary Oliver, Manley Hopkins, Jorge Borges and William Blake.
