Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Microscopy: A Handbook for Beginners and Students It is not possible, without instruction and considerable practice, to make the best use of the microscope, and it is only by knowing fully what can be done and how to do it that the worker will be enabled to wrest from his instrument all that it is capable of yielding. There is a tendency for work to be less well done than it need be, through insufficient teaching and appreciation of elementary facts, and its value to the individual user depends very largely on the methods of manipulation adopted. It is hoped that the directions given in this book will assist beginners and all who work with the microscope to a clear understanding of the best way of using their instruments. The due presentation of Parts II. And III. Has somewhat encroached on the space originally allotted to Part I., but nothing essential has been omitted, and, studied in conjunction with the various makers' catalogues, it is hoped that a more complete understanding will be obtained of the construction and use of the instrument than if more space had been allotted to the subject in an endeavour to make it complete in itself. Were intended to furnish a manual on the use of the microscope for physicians and naturalists. The third and present editions aim to be also a compendium of the micro scopic sciences, but as microscopy reaches its climax in prac tical medicine this branch of study receives the largest attention. Matters of mere curiosity have been but brie y referred to, while every necessary fact or principle relating to the microscope has been carefully stated and classified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscope: A Practical Handbook The chapter on section cutting and mounting has been considerably enlarged, so as to enable the student to gain some knowledge in the preparation of his own specimens. It has been my aim in rewriting this work to extend its usefulness, and to provide an elementary text-book, which will prove Of assistance, not only to the amateur, but to the medical and biological student, in seeking to learn the preper use of the microscope, which is essentially an instrument of the utmost precision. I have to thank Messrs. Baker, Beck, Leitz, Ogilvy, Watson, Swift and Zeiss for the loan of numerous 'blocks, _ and also Dr. J. A. Murray and Mr. W. Pilgrim for kindly making a number of drawings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Microscopy: Being a Handbook to the Microscope Every one who has to use the microscope must decide {for him self the question as to whether he will do so in accordance with a system of rule of thumb, or whether he will seek to supersede this by a system of reasoned action based upon a study of his instrument and a consideration of the scientific principles of micro s00pical technique. The present text-book has no message to those who are content to follow a system of rule of thumb, and to eke this out by blind trial and error. It addresses itself to those who are dissatisfied with the results thus obtained, and who desire to master the scientific principles of microscopy, even at the price of some intellectual effort. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Microscopy: Designed for Students in Laboratory Work and for Practitioners Microscopy is a new and a growing science. Those of the profession who were graduated more than a decade ago for the most part received scanty instruction in lab oratory work, and since that time much has been added to the technique of medical microscopy. There are many who are unable to avail themselves of a post-graduate laboratory course who desire to do such microscopic investigation as will be helpful to them in their daily practice. The more complete works on microscopy offer to such an one a bewildering mass of material from which he is unable to cull that which will be of service to himself. It is to the beginner in microscopy, and particularly to him who must work without the advantage of the personal guidance of a teacher, that the book may prove of value. It will be noticed that usually only one method is given whereby to reach a certain result. This is the method which has proved the best for routine work and which is at the same time the most simple and the least liable to error.
