Book excerpt: The planktonic foraminifera have, for over forty years, been recognised to be the most valuable stratigraphic indices for marine sediments of Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic age. However, their evolutionary origins in the Jurassic and their development, morphological evolution and systematics in the Early Cretaceous have, until now, been poorly understood. This book illustrates for the first time all the published taxa known from the Jurassic, and clarifies and corrects their taxonomy. The taxonomy and stratigraphic distribution of the Early Cretaceous planktonic foraminifera are also revised, and all of the published species are illustrated, using the type specimens. The systematics of the Early Cretaceous forms are clearly set out, both for species and for genera: their evolution is explained as well as the ecological importance of the morphological changes they have undergone. Moreover, by analogy with the Recent Globigerinacea the palaeoenvironmental significance of these Early Cretaceous taxa is discussed. The book deals with 136 species belonging to 26 genera, five of which - Compactogerina, Haeuslerina (of the Jurassic), Lilliputianelloides; Claviblowiella and Planohedbergella (of the Cretaceous) - are new. Range charts are provided, as are extensive keys for the more important genera. Book excerpt: In this book, evolutionary classification and nomenclature in the Cretaceous planktic foraminifera with at least one stage with chambers alternately added with respect to the test growth axis are analysed in seven articles. The first article in this book presents new data about the group's evolutionary origin and different aspects of the iterative evolution of the planktic habitat in the foraminiferal history, together with a critical review of some past ideas on this topic. A new benthic foraminiferal genus is described. The evolution of different lineages is presented in five successive articles, which show the importance of high resolution data in reconstructing the group's evolutionary history. Four new lineages are described. A new perspective on the classification of the planktic foraminifera is presented in the last article, where at the scale of the entire group a new and upward evolutionary classification, is applied. The fundamental unit of organisation is changed from species to lineage through a shift at paradigm level in understanding the evolution of the fossil record. In further developments in evolutionary classification, a new nomenclature system is applied. The new nomenclature uses English instead of Latin and has a rate of compression of around 1:18 (one English word for 18 Latin words).

It mainly focuses on the Jurassic interval, but also concisely discusses the preceding Triassic and Cretaceous geological records. The key to the study is primarily held in the recently developed ammonoid based high resolution scales in the Triassic and Jurassic period. The Indian Jurassic record is thus elevated to a high resolution pedestal. The large intra-Jurassic stratigraphic gap in Kachchh, with increase in duration from margin to basin, has been précised in different sections, along with radical revision of its long held interpretation from sub-aerial to sub-marine all over from Arabia to Australia. Other significant gaps are also differentiated into sub-aerial and sub-marine. The Indian Late Precambrian – Neogene record is organized into five mega-sequences. Among these, the fourth – also the most important one – includes the intra-Permian to Early Eocene interval from the origin to the closure of the Neotethys. Based on multidisciplinary integration of the Indian Mesozoic geological record and comparison with hydrocarbon producing basins on east and west of India, a highly positive scenario of the hydrocarbon source/reservoir sediment perspective is outlined in the book in sequence stratigraphic backdrop as an edifice for future elaborate evaluation.
