Book The No nonsense Guide to Water

Download or read book The No nonsense Guide to Water written by Maggie Black and published by Verso. This book was released on 2004 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water sustains life: without it, humans cannot survive for more than a few days. And yet this precious fluid is becoming increasingly politicized as the debates about control and ownership of water itself, and of the many organizations which govern its use, gain force. Maggie Black explores the many roles water plays in human life and, as the defense of water rights looks set to become an explosive issue, provides a clear overview on the vital issues of distribution, technology, irrigation, land use and commodification.

Book Going Green with Water

Download or read book Going Green with Water written by Emma J. Eickhoff and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores perceptions of water conservation by college students in the Texas Panhandle. There is a lot of existing research about water conservation, but very few employ a qualitative approach. Most previous studies use surveys to examine what types of water conservation people engage in, measure people’s attitudes towards water conservation, and explore how much water can be saved by using more efficient household items and appliances. This type of research is important because groundwater levels specifically in the Ogallala aquifer are decreasing at a faster rate compared to the rates at which water is recharging. Lack of qualitative studies about water conservation inspired the qualitative approach choice of in-depth interviews for this study. Nine participants were interviewed to help provide insight into perceptions college students have about water conservation in the Texas Panhandle. The theoretical framework for this study was the theory of reasoned action which provided components that were vital in creating questions for in-depth interviews. A thematic analysis was used to identify the following themes: important but affordable, a way to save money, connection to the land, motivation from international communities, concern for the future, family, news/electronic media, and classroom. In addition to the themes above, the study concluded not all students had a full understanding of water conservation. Additionally, students knew very little about the water situation and issues in the Texas Panhandle.

Book Handbook of Commercial Catalysts

Download or read book Handbook of Commercial Catalysts written by Howard F. Rase and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-03-24 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the advances in understanding the phenomena that occur on a catalyst surface, much of the successful catalyst development and use continues to be half science and half art. The art resides in the practical knowledge of experts in the development and use of commercial catalysts-it comes with experience. Now the background needed to nurture the experience and inspire the art is collected along with the science into a single volume. Whether called upon to select or improve a catalyst, design a process, diagnose operating problems, or improve existing processes, the Handbook of Commercial Catalysts provides the information needed to form a basis for the task. It offers a starting point by providing a broad overview of 150 major commercial processes and the heterogeneous catalyst used for each. The author has arranged them according to specific reaction or reaction type, and supplies reference citations for deeper research. He offers valuable insghts-based on chemistry, thermodynamics, and surface science-that provide a framework for rational reasoning about catalyst performance. With data collected from the existing literature, from the in-house specialists of commercial vendors, and from his own extensive experience, the author discusses for each reaction: Product uses Chemistry Mechanism Catalyst type Catalyst suppliers and licensors Catalyst deactivation Catalyst regeneration Process units Process kinetics Armed with this information, the reader can begin rational analysis of an existing or planned reaction system and logically discuss catalyst characteristics and operations with technical representative of catalyst manufacturers and with colleagues.

Book Water for Texas

Download or read book Water for Texas written by Jim Norwine and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than the economy, more than changing demographics, evenmore than education, water is the key to the future of Texas. It is not much of an overstatement to claim that water is the future of Texas. In the fall of 2000, a conference on "the world's most crucial natural resource" was held at Texas A&M University. It was a gathering of people with many viewpoints and areas of expertise, all focused on what the book's editors rightly say is and will be the state's definingissue--water. Together, the observations and recommendations brought together in this volume represent some of the best thinking about Texas' connections with water--in the past, present, and future. Ranging from broad historical overviews to technical and scientific discussions, the chapters address the questions of where we have been and where we are headed as we enter a new century of challenges to provide water for Texas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ten impassioned essays, veteran Texas environmental advocates and conservation professionals step outside their roles as lawyers, lobbyists, administrators, consultants, and researchers to write about water. Their personal stories of what the springs, rivers, bottomlands, bayous, marshes, estuaries, bays, lakes, and reservoirs mean to them and to our state come alive in the landscape photography of Charles Kruvand. Allied with the Texas Living Waters Project (a joint education and policy initiative of the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Environmental Defense Fund, among others), editor Ken Kramer joins his fellow activists in a call to keep rivers flowing, to protect wildlife habitat, and to save tax dollars by using water efficiently and sustainability.
