Book London Past and Present Vol 1 of 3

Download or read book London Past and Present Vol 1 of 3 written by Henry B. Wheatley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London, Past and Present, Vol. 1 of 3: Its History, Associations, and Traditions The year 1850, when the Handbook was last issued, exactly divides the nineteenth century in half, but equally it divides off a period of little change from one almost of revolution. Although before 1850 great changes, such as the formation of Regent Street in 1813-1820 and of New Oxford Street in 1847, had been carried out, yet large districts of London still remained unaltered. As property, however, grew in value it was found that the enhanced value made it profitable to erect handsome buildings in place of poor houses, and the City was gradually rebuilt. In time the same process was carried out in the West End, and dwelling-houses were turned into offices, while the suburbs in consequence increased in extent, owing largely to the requirements of the shopkeeper, who left his house in town to the undisputed claims of business. But this rebuilding is not all that has to be considered. Institutions have been altered and charities reorganised to an extent that is only fully recognised by one who has worked on this subject. Every attempt has been made to note all these changes, and to bring the information up to the date of publication. Mr. Cunningham in his Preface expressed his thanks to the many gentlemen who had assisted him in the compilation of his work, and among these are such distinguished names as the Right Hon. John Wilson Croker; Mr. Samuel Rogers, the poet; Mr. Lockhart Earl Stanhope Mr. Forster; and Mr. T. Hudson Turner. I too wish to express my cordial thanks to those who have assisted me; they are numerous, for in all instances I have received cordial assistance from the officers of institutions to whom I have applied, as well as others. Stone walls de fended the whole precinct, pierced by handsome gates, one of which was in King Street, one near New Palace Yard, one opening on Tothill Street,1 and one in College Street where stood the abbey mill. Bridges crossed the brooks, and are said to exist still, but far beneath the present streets, for Thorney has been raised about nine feet, on the average, above its ancient level. Download or read book London Town Past and Present Vol 1 written by W. W. Hutchings and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London Town Past and Present, Vol. 1: With a Chapter on the Future in London by Ford Madox Hueffer Although of books on London the name is legion, the reception accorded to the present work in serial form has shown that there was room left for a book which aims at giving, in the itinerary form, a descriptive and historical account of the cities and boroughs that make up the Administrative County of London, with some speculations upon the future of the Metropolis. The reader who may fail to find in the following pages something which he would have included had he been the writer will, I hope, in his charity, make allowance for the difficulty created by the immense mass of material available. At every step in the journey it has been necessary, from exigencies of space, to reject matter which clamoured for acceptance: and many an unhappy quarter of an hour has been spent in deciding between subjects which had exasperatingly equal claims 10 inclusion. Should the reader's eye fall upon a mistake, the same charity will, I trust, lead him to reflect that the work embraces thousands of names and dates and facts and allusions, and that in the history of London, in spite of the good work done of late years by many diligent students, there is still no lack of slippery places. At the cost of some slight repetition I have aimed at making each chapter as far as possible self-containing, so that the reader may not be distracted by a multitude of cross-references. In the Section which has the City of London for its theme. I have been glad to draw upon the books published under the auspices of the ancient City Corporation, among them Rilev's "Memorials of London Life." Price's "Historical Account of the Guildhail," Dr. Reginald Sharpe's "London and the Kingdom." and Mr. Charles Welch's "Modern History of the City of London"; and throughout the work I have been greatly helped by the publications of the London County Council - notably the wonderful collection of facts and figures entitled "London Statistics," and the booklets that authoritatively tell the story of the houses to which the Council has affixed commemorative tablets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London Town Past and Present, Vol. 2 of 4: Historical, Descriptive, Anecdotal In Norden's engraving we See at the Southwark end the fortified Bridge Gate, garnished with traitors' heads; between the sixth and seventh piers is a drawbridge, further to secure London against attacks from across the water; and the bridge almost throughout its entire length is lined with buildings, among them the famous Nonsuch House, an enormous wooden pile, four storeys high, brave with gilding, and with cupolas and turrets at each corner, the whole brought from Holland, and fastened together with wooden pegs instead of with nails. It stood upon the seventh pier from the Southwark side, just north of the drawbridge. In the middle of the-bridge stood the chapel of St. Thomas of Canterbury, in two storeys; and under its staircase was buried Peter of Colechurch when, after having held the wardenship of the bridge which he had built, the time came for him to die.
