Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook for Field Geologists Members of the U. S. Geological Survey have for some time felt the need of a convenient and concise description of geologic field methods. An attempt to meet this need was made by the publication, in 1908, of a Handbook for Field Geologists in the United States Geological Survey. This work was intended for distribution only to members of the Survey, and only a small edition was issued. The requests for copies of the Handbook, which have come in from members of State Surveys, teachers, mining geologists, and others, indicate a genuine need for something of the kind among geologists generally. The present work is written in response to this evident demand. The Survey Handbook has been used in the preparation of this work, omitting those instructions which apply only to members of the Government Survey, and enlarging upon certain features which will be of service to students preparing for work in field geology. In geologic field work, as in most other things, there are certain methods of procedure which have been found by experience better than others, and poor or wrong methods result in loss of efficiency. While many of the suggestions given may appear entirely too elementary, and to cover points on which instructions are unnecessary, it is my experience that mistakes in these simple matters are by no means confined to beginners. Field geologists, and particularly students using this book, are cautioned against its abuse. Directions for making and recording observations and for the use of the schedules are intended to insure thoroughness and system, not to relieve the observer of the necessity for thought. It would be a misfortune if they should hamper originality or reduce the work to a merely mechanical process. Book excerpt: Describes the methods, procedures, and specialized equipment of field work in geology and includes a guide to making maps of specific areas. A guide to advances in the increasingly broad and interpretive discipline of formation mapping theory. Thorough, yet compact enough for use in the field, it consists of brief descriptions of textures and structures useful in interpreting depositional environments, kinds of volcanic activity, and plutonic events and conditions. Included are procedures often reserved for the laboratory or office: staining rocks, correcting orientations of current indicators, constructing profile sections of folds, measuring strains, making photogeologic interpretations, and more. Covers pre-field considerations, methods of observation and measurement, recognition of key geologic features, and preparation of a report. Illustrated with composite drawings

Book Handbook of Indiana Geology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Handbook of Indiana Geology Classic Reprint written by W. n. Logan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 1142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Indiana Geology The Handbook of Indiana Geology is, in a large measure, the result of a co-operative plan which had its inception shortly after the establishment of the Department of Conservation of Indiana. The plan constitutes an agree ment whereby the instructional staff of the Department of Geology. Of Indiana University conducts the field and laboratory investigations for the Department of Conservation, thus obviating the necessity for large salary expenditures. In this manner our slender geological funds may be used to defray other expenses incurred in the investigation of the mineral resources of Indiana. This plan of co-operation under which not even the State Geologist's salary is paid by the Division, provides the Department of Conservation a corps of trained workers in all the various phases of geological work. Phases having a cultural, educational, economic and scientific bearing. Evidence of the success of the co-operative plan is to be found in the present volume. There is a Latin proverb to the effect that nothing worth while is aecom plished without great effort. It is well exemplified in this treatise. Some of the preliminary investigations necessary for the results embodied in this volume have been carried on by the collaborators for more than a score of years. During the past two years their efforts have been concentrated toward the completion of the work. Each spare moment has been employed without expectation of monetary reward. Thus we have here garnered the fruits of years of labor at an expense to the State of what amounts virtually to the cost of printing the volume. Sales from two of the chapters which were printed in advance will assist materially in defraying the expenses of printing the complete work. Book Geologic Guide to the Gas and Oil Fields of Northern California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geologic Guide to the Gas and Oil Fields of Northern California Classic Reprint written by Oliver E. Bowen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geologic Guide to the Gas and Oil Fields of Northern California The Editor' and the Division realize that this Bulletin violates some sound and accepted principles of editorial practich problem it has not been possible to solve satisfactorily. Names of subsurface zones and geologic units are those commonly used and well understood in each of the gas fields discussed, even though they are not always in conformity with the best recommendations of the American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature. It was found impractical to re-draft all maps and charts to ensure uniform usage of geologic symbols, desirable as this might be. The Editor has made no attempt to reconcile differences of geological mapping and interpretation as expressed by different authors. This was not even considered desirable; differences in geologists' opinions have sometimes led to important discoveries. Finally, in the interest of economy, re-drafting of maps was avoided if they were already clear and legible. Book The Field Guide to New Zealand Geology

Download or read book The Field Guide to New Zealand Geology written by Jocelyn Thornton and published by Penguin Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first field guide written for the general public and beginners in geology in New Zealand. Now fully revised and updated, it shows travellers in New Zealand something of the tremendous variety of our rocks, minerals and fossils and describes what to look for in many areas where rock formations are prominent. It covers the history of New Zealand from its beginnings on the sea floor some 600 million years ago to its present patchwork landscape of volcano, range and plain. This land was formed from many different layers of rock - volcanic flows, forest debris, ocean mud. All these have special characteristics, which are explained and illustrated to enable readers to find the layers and understand their origins and what they can tell us about the landscapes of the past. The crystals that grew in the rocks and the remains of living creatures that were preserved are also illustrated and described. Written in simplified terms, it includes an introductory chapter on general geology, A geological time chart and quick reference maps of the North Island and the South Island for travellers.

Book Geology and Palaeontology of Eighteen Mile Creek and the Lake Shore Sections of Erie County New York

Download or read book Geology and Palaeontology of Eighteen Mile Creek and the Lake Shore Sections of Erie County New York written by Amadeus W. Grabau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Palaeontology of Eighteen Mile Creek and the Lake Shore Sections of Erie County, New York: A Hand-Book for the Use of Students and Amateurs This book is intended as the first of a series of hand-books of local geology, which treat the subject with special reference to the needs of the student. The advantage of beginning the study of geology with the special consideration of a selected field, instead of the general text-book study, must be apparent, even though it seems like a complete inversion of the normal order of procedure. In order that the student who comes to the field without a preliminary training in geology may take up the subject intelligently, the first portion of the introductory chapter of Part I. Is devoted to a brief consideration of the elementary geological principles involved in the structure of the region under consideration. Hence no apology is needed for the introduction of such matters here. In chapters one and two the eight sections of the most important portion of the gorge of Eighteen Mile Creek and those of the Lake Shore, are considered in detail. Lists of fossils found in the various beds are not given, but such lists will be found in the author's paper on the F aunas of the Hamilton Group of Eighteen Mile Creek and Vicinity. As far as this guide treats of the Hamilton group, it is based directly on that paper. And constant references are made to it in the text. In chapter three of Part I., an attempt is made to present in popular form the succession of geological events in this region, as revealed in the sections described in the earlier chapters.
