Book The Field Description of Igneous Rocks

Download or read book The Field Description of Igneous Rocks written by R. S. Thorpe and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a companion volume to the handbooks on sedimentary and metamorphic rocks published by the Geological Society of London in association with the Open University Press. Despite the title, this is more than just a guide to the study of igneous rocks in the field--it provides a concise, compact survey of many facets of igneous petrology. The chapter on volcanic rocks provides a particularly clear exposition of the various features encountered in modern volcanic environments, although serious students should know that palaeovolcanic rocks cannot always be satisfactorily interpreted in these terms. There is also a welcome coverage of the mineral deposits often associated with the later stages of granitic activity. The diagrams are clear and relevant, although some of the photographs suffered during reproduction. It would serve as a general introductory text, although it would need to a companion volume on thin-section petrology, at least for more serious students of the subject. Recommended as a well-balanced attempt to foster a sensible, rational approach to the mysteries of igneous rocks in the field. It also fits the pocket--literally and figuratively.

Book Geology in the Field

Download or read book Geology in the Field written by Robert R. Compton and published by . This book was released on 1985-08-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Replaces Compton's Manual of Field Geology (1962). A guide to advances in the increasingly broad and interpretive discipline of formation mapping theory. Thorough, yet compact enough for use in the field, it consists of brief descriptions of textures and structures useful in interpreting depositional environments, kinds of volcanic activity, and plutonic events and conditions. Included are procedures often reserved for the laboratory or office: staining rocks, correcting orientations of current indicators, constructing profile sections of folds, measuring strains, making photogeologic interpretations, and more. Covers pre-field considerations, methods of observation and measurement, recognition of key geologic features, and preparation of a report. Illustrated with composite drawings. Fourteen appendixes provide systemized data and procedures.
