Book Lexicography at a Crossroads

Download or read book Lexicography at a Crossroads written by Henning Bergenholtz and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of original research articles on lexicography written by prominent international scholars within the field. It aims at describing the state-of-the-art in lexicography at the beginning of the 21st century and at making proposals for future theoretical and practical work in the field. Theoretical lexicography currently has two competing theories: a contemplative theory focusing on the description of existing dictionaries on the basis of linguistic principles, and a function-based, transformative theory focusing on the dictionary and the user in order to develop new principles for dictionary research and dictionary making. Research in lexicography has now reached a crossroads and it is time to take stock of the present situation and try to identify the theories and principles that will set the agenda and point the direction for future lexicographic research and the production of printed and electronic dictionaries.

Book A King Translated

    Book Details:
  • Author : Astrid Stilma
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-03-23
  • ISBN : 131718775X
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book A King Translated written by Astrid Stilma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King James is well known as the most prolific writer of all the Stuart monarchs, publishing works on numerous topics and issues. These works were widely read, not only in Scotland and England but also on the Continent, where they appeared in several translations. In this book, Dr Stilma looks both at the domestic and international context to James's writings, using as a case study a set of Dutch translations which includes his religious meditations, his epic poem The Battle of Lepanto, his treatise on witchcraft Daemonologie and his manual on kingship Basilikon Doron. The book provides an examination of James's writings within their original Scottish context, particularly their political implications and their role in his management of his religio-political reputation both at home and abroad. The second half of each chapter is concerned with contemporary interpretations of these works by James's readers. The Dutch translations are presented as a case study of an ultra-protestant and anti-Spanish reading from which James emerges as a potential leader of protestant Europe; a reputation he initially courted, then distanced himself from after his accession to the English throne in 1603. In so doing this book greatly adds to our appreciation of James as an author, providing an exploration of his works as politically expedient statements, which were sometimes ambiguous enough to allow diverging - and occasionally unwelcome - interpretations. It is one of the few studies of James to offer a sustained critical reading of these texts, together with an exploration of the national and international context in which they were published and read. As such this book contributes to the understanding not only of James's works as political tools, but also of the preoccupations of publishers and translators, and the interpretative spaces in the works they were making available to an international audience.

Book Sixteenth Century English Dictionaries

Download or read book Sixteenth Century English Dictionaries written by John Considine and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume in the trilogy Dictionaries in the English-Speaking World, 1500-1800, which will offer a new history of lexicography in and beyond the early modern British Isles. The volume explores the dictionaries, wordlists, and glossaries that were compiled and read by speakers of English from the end of the Middle Ages to the year 1600. These include the first printed dictionaries in which English words were collected; the dictionaries of Latin used by all educated English-speakers, from young children to Shakespeare to adult royalty; the dictionaries of modern languages that gave English-speakers access to the languages and cultures of continental Europe; dictionaries and wordlists documenting other languages from Armenian to Malagasy to Welsh; and a great variety of specialized English wordlists. No unified history has ever surveyed this vast, lively, and culturally significant lexicographical output before. The guiding principle of the book, and the trilogy, is that a story about dictionaries must also be a story about human beings. John Considine offers a full and sympathetic account of those who compiled and used these works, and those who supported them financially, paying particular attention to records of dictionary use and its traces in surviving copies. The volume will appeal to all those interested in the languages and literary cultures of the sixteenth-century English-speaking world.

Book The Pure Language of the Heart

Download or read book The Pure Language of the Heart written by Annemieke Meijer and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of Sentimentalism in the Netherlands. Taking for its starting point the polemic between Rhijnvis Feith, the champion of the Dutch Sentimental vogue, and his chief opponent Willem Emmery de Perponcher (a polemic that lasted from 1786 to 1789), the author places the Dutch debate over Sentimentalism in a wider socio-cultural context. The Dutch had their own version of Sentimentalism. Its specific nature, and the themes that were touched upon in the debate which it evoked, are here described and analysed against the European background of English Sensibility and German Empfindsamkeit. The Pure Language of the Heart also discusses authors such as Elisabeth Maria Post and Jacob Eduard de Witte. It traces the vocabulary of eighteenth-century Dutch sentimental discourse, and contains an extensive bibliography of contemporary material relating to the Sentimental.

Book Idioms and Fixed Expressions in English Language Study Before 1800

Download or read book Idioms and Fixed Expressions in English Language Study Before 1800 written by Gabriele Knappe and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study represents the first critical examination of the contexts and ways in which idioms and fixed expressions of two or more words (phraseological units) such as let sleeping dogs lie, try one's luck or at hand were collected, commented upon and also analysed by English language scholars between about 1440 and 1800. The large-scale investigation surveys theoretical and practical approaches including proverb studies, treatises on rhetoric and style, foreign-language teaching, collections of phrases, bilingual and monolingual lexicography, translation, universal and philosophical language schemes, shorthand systems and English grammar books. This pioneering study is intended to contribute to the formation of English historical phraseology as a new subdiscipline in English linguistics.

Book Ashgate Critical Essays on Early English Lexicographers

Download or read book Ashgate Critical Essays on Early English Lexicographers written by Anne C. McDermott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century is renowned for the publication of Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language, which reference sources still call the first English dictionary. This collection demonstrates the inaccuracy of that claim, but its tenacity in the public mind testifies to how decisively Johnson formed our sense of what a dictionary is. The essays and articles in this volume examine the already flourishing tradition of English lexicography from which Johnson drew, as represented by Kersey, Bailey, and Martin, as well as the flourishing contemporary trade in encyclopedic, technical, pronunciation, and bilingual lexicons.

Book Evaluation of Cross Language Information Retrieval Systems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second evaluation campaign of the Cross Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) for European languages was held from January to September 2001. This campaign proved a great success, and showed an increase in participation of around 70% com pared with CLEF 2000. It culminated in a two day workshop in Darmstadt, Germany, 3–4 September, in conjunction with the 5th European Conference on Digital Libraries (ECDL 2001). On the first day of the workshop, the results of the CLEF 2001 evalua tion campaign were reported and discussed in paper and poster sessions. The second day focused on the current needs of cross language systems and how evaluation cam paigns in the future can best be designed to stimulate progress. The workshop was attended by nearly 50 researchers and system developers from both academia and in dustry. It provided an important opportunity for researchers working in the same area to get together and exchange ideas and experiences. Copies of all the presentations are available on the CLEF web site at http://www. clef campaign. org. This volume con tains thoroughly revised and expanded versions of the papers presented at the work shop and provides an exhaustive record of the CLEF 2001 campaign. CLEF 2001 was conducted as an activity of the DELOS Network of Excellence for Digital Libraries, funded by the EC Information Society Technologies program to further research in digital library technologies. The activity was organized in collabo ration with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
