Book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Edmund Von Mach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Part Ten - Portraits - is the least complete part of the collection, especially as regards Roman portraits. This had to be so, because the number of extant Roman por traits is so large that even a fair selection from them would have been out of proportion to the other parts of the book. No attempt, therefore, has been made to give portraits of all men of note. The aim rather has been to select statues and busts which illustrate the develop ment of portrait-sculpture, irrespective of the persons portrayed. In Part Eleven - Heads the specialist may miss some favorite specimens, but here again the material from which to draw is so large that a rigid sifting process became necessary. The principle followed was similar to that adopted for Part Ten. Heads were included in the list when they illustrated the development of sculpture, and often excluded, although with considerable regret, when their chief claim to attention was based on their pleasing appearance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek Sculpture I have not felt able to embody his conclusions in the text Of a handbook for students. In dealing with the later portion of the history of sculpture, I have endeavoured to follow the same principles as in the earlier portion, and consequently I am again precluded from the discussion of many interesting problems as to which I do not feel justified in expressing a dogmatic opinion, while I have not space to give, even in summary, the arguments on each side. I regret that I am unable to fulfil my conditional promise Of an appendix on the discoveries of the French excavators at Delphi, no Official publication having as yet been issued. Download or read book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture written by Edmund von Mach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture This collection offers, on five hundred plates and forty-five text illustrations, the most important remains of Greek and Roman sculpture. Supplementary collections may be issued in the future as they become necessary and are asked for by those who use this series. The plates have been made from original photographs especially imported by the Bureau of University Travel. In a few cases, where original photographs were inaccessible or where better results could be obtained from large plates or photographs in the possession of Harvard University, this has been done, and thanks are due to the proper authorities for the permission to use them. A small number of plates are copied from books. The plates are not "retouched." Where the backgrounds seem to have been painted black this is the defect of the original photograph. In the classification the editor has aimed at clearness, believing to serve the student best by enabling him to find instantly the desired pictures. He has, therefore, often deviated from the general rule of giving in the several groups, first the statues of men, then those of women, and finally the reliefs and other temple sculptures. In the fifth-century group, for instance, the individual artists have been treated separately. In the sub-divisions, whenever possible, the alphabetical order has been followed. Book Greek Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by A. Furtwängler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Roman Sculpture This convenient small edition of the M onurnents of Greek and Roman Sculpture just published in folio form appears in accordance with the wishes of a large number of professors and teachers of higher education in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It should enable both teacher and student to form an idea of the contents of the large work. The explanations and descriptions have been revised and improved by the authors, and translations of all the quota tions in foreign languages have been added. The text is divided into ten groups arranged from an historical point of view and in regard to subject. Each of these groups is preceded by a new collective sketch which aims at a com prehensive View of the various examples from a broad and generalised standpoint. But at the same time the work still preserves its character as a collection of monuments and does not pretend to take the place of a complete history of the subject. These short article's are merely intended to give to each example its proper position in relation to the development Of antique art. As all the principal periods are here presented the text Of the groups constitutes a survey of the whole development of Greek and Roman sculpture. Quotations from modern authors have been almost entirely avoided; only ancient writers are introduced in relevant passages. The Special demands of schools and wider circles of cultured people have been kept in mind. The pictorial part of the work has also been increased in this edition by one or two examples. The two authors have worked on a mutually arranged plan in equal parts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thought of the Author's mode of treating his subject, few will deny the importance of the subject itself. The interest it awakens is altogether independent of the View which we may take of the future of modern sculpture. If, as many think, and notably the more eminent sculptors them selves, Sculpture is a lost art, it has, at any rate, the interest and value of a dead language - 4a language in which the noblest thoughts and tenderest feelings of the most highly gifted people of the world have been written in characters of surpassing clearness and beauty.
