Book excerpt: Author Pat Ross, celebrated for her previous studies of Hampshire folklore and local history, has woven together a fascinating tapestry of recollection from those who saw it all happen with their own eyes. Hampshire At War records these memories in the witnessesOCO own words, their authentic voices, and is illustrated with contemporary pictures, some of which have never before been published. The genesis of the book was an oral history of Hayling IslandOCOs experience of HitlerOCOs War. Surprised by the number and quality of the stories gleaned, the author then resolved to widen her research, and the completed book now encompasses the whole county - plus contributions from beyond its borders. As a testimony to the enduring grit and courage of Hampshire people, and as a memorial to those who, sadly, did not survive to tell their own stories, this book will become a classic of its genre."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Great War of 1914–1918, Southampton played a vital role in the war effort. Designated as Port Number One it saw hundreds of thousands of men and many tons of equipment sail for the fields of Belgium and France. The Second World War was a completely different type of war. Hitlers blitzkrieg tactics led to a more mobile war and, arguably for the first time, airpower played a crucial role. Whoever had superiority in the air had a massive advantage in any particular theater, or battle. This does not, however, mean that Southamptons role was relegated to a minor one.Southamptons men still enlisted in their hundreds. Her women took over roles in factories, on buses and trams, and many of them also served in the armed forces. Her citizens formed defense groups and helped to watch for the enemy invasion and those same citizens suffered greatly when the bombs fell. The Southampton Blitz claimed many lives and this, perhaps, was the greatest difference the town saw in this second global conflagration. It is true that her citizens had also served in the Great War but now, through the efforts of the Luftwaffe, these men, women and children were now also in the front line.Hitler once described Germanys plans as total war. The phrase is certainly apt when one considered how the towns and cities of Britain suffered during the Nazi supremacy. One of those towns was Southampton, a town that once again, just 20 short years after she had given so much, had to brace herself for long years of war in which every single person had their role to play. And once again, Southampton and her citizens were not found wanting.

Download or read book The British Home Front 1939 45 written by Martin Brayley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The population of Britain was mobilized to support the war effort on a scale unseen in any other Western democracy – or in Nazi Germany. They endured long working shifts, shortages of food and all other goods, and complete government control of their daily lives. Most men and women were conscripted or volunteered for additional tasks outside their formal working hours. Under the air raids that destroyed the centres of many towns and made about 2 million homeless, more than 60,000 civilians were killed and 86,000 seriously injured. This fascinating illustrated summary of wartime life, and the organizations that served on the Home front, is a striking record of endurance and sacrifice.

Book The New Forest at War

Book excerpt: The New Forest at War documents aspects of the social and military history of this unique area of Britain during the years of the Second World War. The Forest was on the front line of the massive build-up and launch of D-Day in June 1944. Although many parts of Britain contributed to the final assault, it was this part of Hampshire that was used as the primary assembly and departure point. There were over 100,000 troops under canvas and thousands of military vehicles parked in the quiet country lanes throughout the area. There were also many thousands of ships off the Forest coastline in the waters of the Solent. First published in 2004 this updated edition of The New Forest at War contains additional images and anecdotes which will add both to the reading experience and to visits to the Forest. This highly acclaimed book tells the story of the area during WW2 and its heritage, underpinned now by the New Forest National Park Authority which has implemented and hosts an area wide preservation scheme. The book contains many photographs with first-hand accounts of the Forest during WW2 with reminiscences from military sources as well as civilians. It provides a fascinating snapshot of life at this critical time in the nation's history and it will be of interest to everyone who visits, lives or works in the Forest and to all those with an interest in Britain's wartime heritage.

Book In Time of War

Book excerpt: Using previously unpublished stories, almost a hundred images and material from sources worldwide, this book gives a fascinating new insight into life on the Home Front in the county of Hampshire. The recollections of people who either lived or served in the county during the war are given an extra dimension through anecdotes from some of the many people who moved into the area and brought with them memories of wartime life from elsewhere. The spirit of the people in the late 1930s and during the ensuing war years is captured in the anecdotes and accounts of men, women and children who suddenly found themselves fighting for their lives either on the Home Front or as members of the civilian and armed services. Stories of the Women's Land Army volunteer to the leader of a concert part and the evacuee to the pilot of the RCAF are including in the many first-hand accounts. This book will appeal to all those interested in learning more about the remarkable patriotism, determination and spirit of the wartime generation. In Time of War: Hampshire uniquely captures and reflects the mood and essence of those dramatic years. It is a fascinating companion toThe New Forest at War, by the same author.
