Book Halogenated Hydrocarbons and Alcohols

Download or read book Halogenated Hydrocarbons and Alcohols written by Gerard Meurant and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Mineral Supplies: Assessment and Perspective examines some of the issues in the debate about whether there is an impending global shortage of mineral resources and whether technology and exploration can meet the needs of a rapidly growing rate of mineral consumption in the world. The geologic and economic factors that determine the demand for and the availability and distribution of mineral resources and reserves are discussed, and the future of mineral resource supplies is considered. Comprised of 14 chapters, this volume places emphasis on the technical problems of assuring adequate mineral supplies for the future. The discussion begins by analyzing the complexities and confusion that color much of the discussion about the size and adequacy of world mineral supplies, focusing on the importance of distinguishing between "resources" and "reserves". The next chapter deals with the creation of reserves from resources as a function of price, cost, ore grade, and technology. Subsequent chapters explore the physical and chemical factors that determine the absolute abundance and the actual availability and distribution of resources; the actual geographic distribution among countries of mineral supply and demand; and trends in energy consumption and supply. Conservation of minerals and of the environment and mineral exploration and technical cooperation in developing countries are also treated in considerable detail, along with deep mining techniques and UNDP-assisted projects in geology and mineral resources. This book will be of interest to economists, social scientists, geologists, mining engineers, and mineral technologists.

Book Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry A Practical Guide

Download or read book Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry A Practical Guide written by O. David Sparkman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-05-17 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry: A Practical Guide follows the highly successful first edition by F.G. Kitson, B.S. Larsen, and C.N. McEwen (1996), which was designed as an indispensible resource for GC/MS practitioners regardless of whether they are a novice or well experienced. The Fundamentals section has been extensively reworked from the original edition to give more depth of an understanding of the techniques and science involved with GC/MS. Even with this expansion, the original brevity and simple didactic style has been retained. Information on chromatographic peak deconvolution has been added along with a more in-depth understanding of the use of mass spectral databases in the identification of unknowns. Since the last edition, a number of advances in GC inlet systems and sample introduction techniques have occurred, and they are included in the new edition. Other updates include a discussion on fast GC and options for combining GC detectors with mass spectrometry. The section regarding GC Conditions, Derivatization, and Mass Spectral Interpretation of Specific Compound Types has the same number of compound types as the original edition, but the information in each section has been expanded to not only explain some of the spectra but to also explain why certain fragmentations take place. The number of Appendices has been increased from 12 to 17. The Appendix on Atomic Masses and Isotope Abundances has been expanded to provide tools to aid in determination of elemental composition from isotope peak intensity ratios. An appendix with examples on "Steps to follow in the determination of elemental compositions based on isotope peak intensities" has been added. Appendices on whether to use GC/MS or LC/MS, third-party software for use in data analysis, list of information required in reporting GC/MS data, X+1 and X+2 peak relative intensities based on the number of atoms of carbon in an ion, and list of available EI mass spectral databases have been added. Others such as the ones on derivatization, isotope peak patterns for ions with Cl and/or Br, terms used in GC and in mass spectrometry, and tips on setting up, maintaining and troubleshooting a GC/MS system have all been expanded and updated. Covers the practical instruction necessary for successful operation of GC/MS equipment Reviews the latest advances in instrumentation, ionization methods, and quantitation Includes troubleshooting techniques and a variety of additional information useful for the GC/MS practitioner A true benchtop reference A guide to a basic understanding of the components of a Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) Quick References to data interpretation Ready source for information on new analyses

Book Methods for Oxidation of Organic Compounds V1

Download or read book Methods for Oxidation of Organic Compounds V1 written by Alan Haines and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods for the Oxidation of Organic Compounds: Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes, and Arenes is an account of the different methods used for the controlled oxidation of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and arenes. Most of the oxidative techniques considered are illustrated with detailed experimental procedures taken from the literature. This book is comprised of five chapters and begins with a discussion on alkanes, alkyl groups, and hydrocarbon residues. The formation of alkenes, alcohols, hydroperoxides, dialkyl peroxides, cyclic peroxides, ethers, and esters as well as aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids is described, together with the aromatization of cyclic systems. The following chapters are devoted to alkenes, alkynes, and arenes and focus on the formation of compounds ranging from 1,2-diols and oxiranes (1,2-epoxides) to 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds, phenols and their derivatives, and quinones. The formation of dialkynes by oxidative coupling of 1-alkynes is described, along with the oxidative cleavage of arenes and oxidative coupling of phenols. This monograph should be of interest to organic chemists and research students.
