Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I first started traveling, I was unprepared for the experiences that were about to unfold. My only hope was to get a better understanding of the many cultures that makes the world such a unique place. I also have a great love for people and wanted to meet as many people as I possibly could. That experience did come to light as I move from one part of the globe to another. I can honestly say that of all the countries I have traveled around the world, not one place share the same similarity. From the poor and hungry in the far east to the middle east and from the squatters camp in Soweto to the Aborigines down in Australia, all embraced their own sets of values which has no comparison yet there are some values that enables the traveler to see that in spite of these unique cultural differences, people do share one thing in common. The will to embrace others who they may consider to be different in many ways.

Book Studies in Language and Social Interaction

Download or read book Studies in Language and Social Interaction written by Jennifer Mandelbaum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection offers empirical studies and theoretical essays about human communication in everyday life. The writings come from many of the world's leading researchers and cut across academic boundaries, engaging scholars and teachers from such disciplines as communication, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, and education. Chapters emphasize empirical, qualitative studies of people's everyday uses of talk-in-interaction, and they feature work in such areas as sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, discourse analysis, and ethnography. The volume is dedicated to and highlights themes in the work of the late Robert Hopper, an outstanding scholar in communication who pioneered research in Language and Social Interaction (LSI). The contributors examine various features of human interaction (such as laughter, vocal repetition, and hand gestures) occurring naturally within a variety of settings (at a dinner table, a doctor's office, an automotive repair shop, and so forth), whereby interlocutors accomplish aspects of their interpersonal or institutional lives (resolve a disagreement, report bad medical news, negotiate a raise, and more), all of which may relate to larger social issues (including police brutality, human spirituality, death, and optimism). The chapters in this anthology show that social life is largely a communicative accomplishment and that people constitute the social realities experienced every day through small and subtle ways of communicating, carefully orchestrated but commonly taken for granted. In showcasing the diversity of contemporary LSI research, this volume is appropriate for scholars and graduate students in language and social interaction, communication, sociology, research methods, qualitative research methods, discourse analysis, conversation analysis, linguistics, and related areas.

Book Why the Dutch are Different

Download or read book Why the Dutch are Different written by Ben Coates and published by Nicholas Brealey. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stranded at Schiphol airport, Ben Coates called up a friendly Dutch girl he'd met some months earlier. He stayed for dinner. Actually, he stayed for good. In the first book to consider the hidden heart and history of the Netherlands from a modern perspective, the author explores the length and breadth of his adopted homeland and discovers why one of the world's smallest countries is also so significant and so fascinating. It is a self-made country, the Dutch national character shaped by the ongoing battle to keep the water out from the love of dairy and beer to the attitude to nature and the famous tolerance. Ben Coates investigates what makes the Dutch the Dutch, why the Netherlands is much more than Holland and why the color orange is so important. Along the way he reveals why they are the world's tallest people and have the best carnival outside Brazil. He learns why Amsterdam's brothels are going out of business, who really killed Anne Frank, and how the Dutch manage to be richer than almost everyone else despite working far less. He also discovers a country which is changing fast, with the Dutch now questioning many of the liberal policies which made their nation famous.

Book New Netherland The Dutch Settle the Hudson Valley

Download or read book New Netherland The Dutch Settle the Hudson Valley written by Karen Gibson and published by Mitchell Lane Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-12-23 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first American colonies was New Netherland, established by the Dutch government of the Netherlands more than 160 years before the American Revolution. New Netherland encompassed all of New York, and parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, and Delaware. Early explorers charted land and waterways and claimed them for the Netherlands. They also discovered a profitable trade in furs with Native American tribes. Already successful in trade with Asia, the Dutch established the West India Company to invest in the trade opportunities in America. One of the first things they did was to encourage settlement in New Netherland. People from throughout Europe took advantage of settling in the new colony. According to one governor, Peter Stuyvesant, eighteen different languages were spoken in New Netherland. The Dutch and British had long disagreed about boundaries. These disagreements led to three Anglo-Dutch Wars. In the end, the British took control of New Netherland and renamed it New York. But the Dutch influence on the colony and its people continued.
