Safe from the unpredictability of humanity, she finds comfort in her solitude beneath the shelter of the trees. After years of splitting her time between the real world and her earth-made sanctuary, she discovers her connection with nature has taken a strange turn. When the trees begin to speak, her logic suspects lunacy while her heart craves more. She desperately wants to believe the voices are real and recruits the ear of her friend Roscoe, an Olympic National Park ranger, who cannot hear the voices and deems her claims impossible. But as time passes the trees' grim prophecies come to fruition and Juniper's claims appear validated. Roscoe is forced to question his initial doubts and both are thrust into undesired roles of responsibility. The world as they know it is shifting and if the whispered predictions are correct, all life on Earth will be shattered. Though the trees guide her to safety, persuading others to follow is a challenge. Unsure how to proceed and ensure the survival of her loved ones, she does all she can to convince them to accompany her to the Hall of Mosses. With fierce determination and a resolute trust in nature, Juniper marches toward an uncertain fate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is blanketed in ash. Gaia is gone, but she left specific instructions for the Champions with each of their corresponding elements. With careful timing and placement, she has orchestrated the perfect rebirth for Earth. Her magic is set to let the planet heal at a proper pace and her faith is placed in the Champions for a graceful resurrection of humanity. Little do they realize, they are not alone and a grave opposition is buried beneath the ruins. While the Champions and their followers were the only humans meant to endure the purge, pockets of unintended survivors manage to slip beneath the radar of Gaia's rage. Buried beneath the ash, they emerge months after the fallout, confused and determined to rebuild. Their goals do not align with that of nature and their presence in the new world will be a test of the Champions' resolve. Can they unite and join forces for the greater good? Or will their opposing outlooks for the rebuild of Earth cause tragic tensions? Though the Champions evolve rapidly into their elements with the help of Gaia's magic, it may not be enough to stop the force of all those who awoke, scorned and betrayed, beneath fields of ashes.

Book excerpt: Preservation Hall, located in the French Quarter just three blocks from the Mississippi River, remains an icon of New Orleans and an essential stop for all fans of traditional jazz. Since the early 1960s "The Hall" has served as a sanctuary for the Crescent City's rich and illustrious jazz heritage, a haven for players, and an incubator for successive generations of jazz musicians. Seven nights a week the venue fills to capacity with die-hard fans and curious tourists eager to hear live New Orleans jazz played by a mix of veteran musicians and up-and-coming players. Preservation Hall dedicates itself to the authentic performance of traditional jazz. The space inside seems simple, and a large portion of the audience must stand in the back, behind a limited number of benches, chairs, and floor cushions. The Hall has no dance floor and serves no food or drink. In Preservation Hall, the music alone fills the space between listener and player. In their rare behind-the-scenes portrait, New Orleans photographer Shannon Brinkman and audio documentarian Eve Abrams capture the rhythm and cool of this historic club with both a pulsating array of images and the heartfelt words of band members.

Download or read book Habitat Structure written by S.S. Bell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We conceived the idea for this book after teaching a graduate seminar on 'Habitat Complexity' at The University of South Florida. Discussions during the seminar led us to conclude that similar goals were to be found in studies of the topic that spanned the breadth of ecological research. Yet, the exact meaning of 'habitat structure', and the way in which it was measured, seemed to differ widely among subdisciplines. Our own research, which involves several sorts of ecology, convinced us that the differences among subdisciplines were indeed real ones, and that they did inhibit communica tion. We decided that interchange of ideas among researchers working in marine ecology, plant-animal interactions, physiological ecology, and other more-or-less independent fields would be worthwhile, in that it might lead to useful generalizations about 'habitat structure'. To foster this interchange of ideas. we organized a symposium to attract researchers working with a wide variety of organisms living in many habitats, but united in their interest in the topic of 'habitat structure'. The symposium was held at The University of South Florida's Chinsegut Hill Conference Center, in May. 1988. We asked participants to think about 'habitat structure' in new ways; to synthesize important, but fragmented, information; and. perhaps. to consider ways of translating ideas across systems. The chapters contained in this book reflect the participants' attempts to do so. The book is divided into four parts, by major themes that we have found useful categorizations.
