Download or read book Halina written by Halina Bratkowna Johnson and published by Tate Publishing & Enterprises. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this gripping first-person account of the Nazi occupation of Poland, Halina Johnson describes her personal experiences of those historical events. In a way, Halina tells two stories in this book: one, the diary-like account of a child growing to womanhood, and another, the inspirational chronicle of a small country's bravery. Her own story is so interweaved with Poland's that it becomes a single narrative told from several perspectives. It is Halina's ability to wind these accounts seamlessly into a single narrative that gives the book epic quality. Halina is not the central character of the book; Poland is. She is merely the witness. History books, for example, report that Poles were exiled; Halina transforms exile from a word into a cruel reality. History reports the deportation of Jews to the extermination camps; Halina writes about saying good-bye to her Jewish friend. Through the eyes of a sensitive child, history comes alive. Halina's narration not only celebrates the courage of Poland's young men and women, but also the religious fervor found in the Polish soul. This devotion, as well as Halina's personal faith, winds through the story like a golden thread. With neither apology nor embarrassment, for example, she describes the time an entire group of Poles fell to their knees in the street, bursting into a spontaneous and prayerful hymn. The story of the Poles' selfless struggle for freedom and personal dignity also inspired Pope John Paul II, himself a Pole. He writes: I think of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944---the desperate revolt of my contemporaries who sacrificed everything. They laid down their young lives. They wanted to demonstrate that they could live up to their great and demanding heritage. --- Judith Tate O'Brien, poet

Book And Yet I Am Here

Download or read book And Yet I Am Here written by Halina Nelken and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, Halina Nelken was a precocious fifteen-year-old, living a middle-class life in Krakow. Like other girls her age, she recorded her personal observations and feelings in a diary. As conditions in Krakow deteriorated and her family was forced into the Jewish ghetto, she continued to write, eventually smuggling her diary out with a Catholic friend. This remarkable book tells the story of Nelken's experiences in the ghetto and later in eight Nazi concentration camps, including Plaszow, Auschwitz, and Ravensbruck. Her diary entries, written between 1938 and 1943, form the core of the volume and are supplemented by recollections written shortly after the war, and by later commentaries and explanatory notes which she added in the mid-1980s. Although there exist numerous published and unpublished memoirs by Holocaust survivors, Nelken's book presents one of the few extant diaries written at the time. Already released in Polish and German editions, it has been hailed as one of the finest works of its kind. Now it is available in English for the first time.

Book The Testimony

  • ISBN : 1742738079
  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book The Testimony written by Halina Wagowska and published by Hardie Grant Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopted mother Frieda keeps telling the young Halina that if they survive the Nazi death camps they shall have to testify until they die, but My Testimony is also a record of Halina’s experiences after the camps – including her arrival in Australia after the war where, as a young woman, she worked with charwomen at Collins Street doctors’ surgeries before pursuing a career in pathology at the Alfred Hospital. Described by the author as her last testimony ‘before she drops off the twig’, this carefully crafted work is no straightforward autobiography but one in which the people and places Halina has known take centre stage. The short stories within these pages offer jewels of wisdom from a woman who has lived a truly full – richly rewarding as well as horrifically harrowing – life. Eighty-one-year-old human rights activist Halina Wagowska survived Auschwitz and Stutthof concentration camps in her early teens before immigrating to Australia. Over the years she has frequently testified to the consequences of prejudice she witnessed: she has provided material for Thomas Keneally’s book on Schindler; and for Spielberg’s Shoah institute, via the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Melbourne; as well as presented at international psychology conferences as a child survivor.

Book Music in Chopin s Warsaw

Download or read book Music in Chopin s Warsaw written by Halina Goldberg and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2008-03-04 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Warsaw was aware of and in tune with the most recent European styles and fashions in music, but it was also the cradle of a vernacular musical language that was initiated by the generation of Polish composers before Chopin and which found its full realization in his work. Had Chopin been born a decade earlier or a decade later, Goldberg argues, the capital - devastated by warfare and stripped of all cultural institutions - could not have provided support for his talent. The young composer would have been compelled to seek musical education abroad and thus would have been deprived of the specifically Polish experience so central to his musical style."--BOOK JACKET.

  • Release : 2015-03-10

Download or read book All Whom I Have Loved written by Aharon Appelfeld and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Whom I Have Loved is the haunting story of a Jewish family in Eastern Europe in the 1930s as seen through the eyes of an unforgettable nine-year-old boy. The beloved only child of divorced parents, Paul watches helplessly as his family and his world dissolve around him. At first he lives with his mother—a secular, assimilated schoolteacher, whom he adores until she “betrays” him by marrying a gentile. He’s then sent to live with his father—once an admired avant-garde artist, but now reviled by the critics as a “decadent Jew,” who drowns his anger, pain, and humiliation in drink. Paul searches in vain for a life of stability and meaning. The earthy peasant girl who briefly takes care of him, the pull he feels toward the Jews praying in the local synagogue, and his fascination with Eastern Orthodox church rituals give him only tantalizing glimpses into worlds of which he can never be a part. The fates that Paul’s parents will meet with Paul as terrified witness, and his own fate as an orphaned Jewish child alone in Europe in 1938, are rendered by Aharon Appelfeld with extraordinary subtlety and power, as they foreshadow, in the heart-wrenching story of three individuals, the cataclysm that is about to engulf all of European Jewry.

Book Children of the Holocaust

Download or read book Children of the Holocaust written by Paul R. Bartrop and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important reference work highlights a number of disparate themes relating to the experience of children during the Holocaust, showing their vulnerability and how some heroic people sought to save their lives amid the horrors perpetrated by the Nazi regime. This book is a comprehensive examination of the people, ideas, movements, and events related to the experience of children during the Holocaust. They range from children who kept diaries to adults who left memoirs to others who risked (and, sometimes, lost) their lives in trying to rescue Jewish children or spirit them away to safety in various countries. The book also provides examples of the nature of the challenges faced by children during the years before and during World War II. In many cases, it examines the very act of children's survival and how this was achieved despite enormous odds. In addition to more than 125 entries, this book features 10 illuminating primary source documents, ranging from personal accounts to Nazi statements regarding what the fate of Jewish children should be to statements from refugee leaders considering how to help Jewish children after World War II ended. These documents offer fascinating insights into the lives of students during the Holocaust and provide students and researchers with excellent source material for further research.

Book excerpt: It's like being at a crossroads - a point of absolute, unequivocal change. It makes the blood rush. Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, 1833. Edmund Kean, the greatest actor of his generation, has collapsed on stage whilst playing Othello. A young black American actor has been asked to take over the role. But as the public riot in the streets over the abolition of slavery, how will the cast, critics and audience react to the revolution taking place in the theatre? Lolita Chakrabarti's play creates imagined experiences based on the little-known, but true, story of Ira Aldridge, an African-American actor who, in the nineteenth century, built an incredible reputation on the stages of London and Europe. Red Velvet received its world premiere at the Tricycle Theatre, London, on 11 October 2012, starring Adrian Lester as Ira Aldridge. It was revived at the Tricycle Theatre on 23 January 2014, before transferring to St Ann's Warehouse, New York, on 25 March 2014. This second edition includes the revisions made to the script for the 2014 revival of the play. It also features contextual articles by Lolita Chakrabarti about the real Ira Aldridge, and a piece by Professor Ayanna Thompson about the significance of Aldridge's erasure from standard theatre history and the importance of the play in this regard.
