Book Early English Devotional Prose and the Female Audience

Download or read book Early English Devotional Prose and the Female Audience written by Elizabeth Ann Robertson and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the NOrman conquest, women and the lower classes became the primary audiences for English, as opposed to Latin or French, literature. Among the works written for female audiences are the hitherto neglected AB texts: three female saints' lives, a tract on virginity, a homily, and a guide for anchoresses. In this lucid, innovative study, Elizabeth Robertson shows that the AB texts were written in an effective experiential style that distinguished them from other spiritual works of the period.Key characteristics of this special style--nonteleological structre, pervasive use of concrete imagery, and thematic focus on the female body--have been viewed by some as hallmarks of women's writing more generally. Combining feminist theory with critical skill and an impressive command of Old and Middle English materials, the author argues, to the contrary, that in the thirteenth-century England this style was created by educated male writers in accord with their beliefs about nature and needs of marginal social groups.Beginning with the history and motivations of female anchorites and surveying medieval philosophy and theology in relation to gender theory, this book offers the first comprehensive analysis of the AB texts and then details their debt to earlier English vernacular works and to the continental theological movements that increasingly emphasized physical experience and matter. The result is an exciting, learned account of the feminization of early English prose.

Book The Rise of Functional Categories

Download or read book The Rise of Functional Categories written by Elly van Gelderen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, word order has come to be seen, within a Government Binding/Minimalist framework, as determined by functional as well as lexical categories. Within this framework, functional categories are often seen as present in every language without evidence being available in that language. This book contains arguments that even though Universal Grammar makes functional categories available, the language learner must decide whether or not to incorporate them in his or her grammar. For instance, it is shown that English has one (not two as often assumed) functional category between the complementizer and the Negation, but that languages such as Dutch, Swedish, German and Old and Middle English have none. The title of the book can be seen in terms of the direction current research is taking; it can also be seen in terms of the changes that have taken place in English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eileen Edna Power's 'Medieval English Nunneries c. 1275 to 1535' offers a thorough exploration of the social and religious history of English nunneries during the Middle Ages. Power draws from a wide range of sources, including wills, account rolls, and visitation documents, to provide a detailed picture of life inside these cloistered communities. From the motivations of the women who took the veil to the financial difficulties that plagued many nunneries, Power delves into the day-to-day realities of monastic life. She also addresses controversies such as the moral state of nunneries, and the attempts at reform made by external authorities. This book is a fascinating and meticulously researched account of a little-understood aspect of medieval England.
