Book Ways of Social Change

Download or read book Ways of Social Change written by Garth Massey and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is at our fingertips, but understanding what is going on has never been more daunting. Garth Massey’s Ways of Social Change is a primer for making sense of both rapidly moving events and the cultural and structural forces on which social life is built, while teaching critical thinking skills needed to understand social change. With an approach that is fresh, timely, challenging, and engaging, Ways of Social Change shows students how social change is both a lived experience and the result of our actions in the world. It invites the reader into the realm of social science, where clarification, understanding, and inquiry provide for both informed opinions and a path to effective involvement. The core of the book focuses on five forces that powerfully influence the direction, scope and speed of social change: science and technology, social movements, war and revolution, large corporations, and the state. A concluding chapter encourages students to examine their own perspectives and offers ways to engage in social change, now and in their lifetime.

Download or read book Elegy for Iris written by John Bayley and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I was living in a fairy story--the kind with sinister overtones and not always a happy ending--in which a young man loves a beautiful maiden who returns his love but is always disappearing into some unknown and mysterious world, about which she will reveal nothing." So John Bayley describes his life with his wife, Iris Murdoch, one of the greatest contemporary writers in the English-speaking world, revered for her works of philosophy and beloved for her incandescent novels. In Elegy for Iris, Bayley attempts to uncover the real Iris, whose mysterious world took on darker shades as she descended into Alzheimer's disease. Elegy for Iris is a luminous memoir about the beauty of youth and aging, and a celebration of a brilliant life and an undying love.

Book excerpt: Born in 1860 in a small Czech town, Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was an artist on the forefront of Art Nouveau, the modernist movement that swept Paris in the 1910s, marking a return to the simplicity of natural forms, and changing the world of art and design forever. In fact, Art Nouveau was known to insiders as the “Mucha style” for the legions of imitators who adapted the master’s celebrated tableaux. Today, his distinctive depictions of lithe young women in classical dress have become a pop cultural touchstone, inspiring album covers, comic books, and everything in between. Patrick Bade and Victoria Charles offer readers an inspiring survey of Mucha’s career, illustrated with over one hundred lustrous images, from early Parisian advertisements and posters for Sandra Bernhardt, to the famous historical murals painted just before his death, at the age of 78, in 1939.

Her composed and simplified existence is disrupted when her son Frank lands on her doorstep after his rental home is destroyed in a wildfire, the latest in a string of personal setbacks for Frank. He arrives with Logan, his young and handsome boyfriend, a featured extra on a teen soap opera with a loyal Instagram following. Soon, news from her estranged family in Maine forces everyone out of their comfort zone. Iris convinces Frank and Logan to travel with her to the potato farm from where she made a quick getaway fifty years earlier, unleashing a funny and poignant family saga about secrets, forgiveness, and the fluctuating map of the human heart. An extraordinary story about family resilience, missed connections, and second chances that assures us it’s sometimes okay to create our own Hollywood endings.

Book A Guide to Bearded Irises

Download or read book A Guide to Bearded Irises written by Kelly Norris and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diversity of bearded irises rivals that of any other perennial grown in temperate climates. For some gardeners, they bring back warm memories of a grandparent's garden; for others, they're a cutting-edge plant with a seemingly endless capacity for producing new forms and patterns. As the manager of Rainbow Iris Farm and co-editor of the Bulletin of the American Iris Society, Kelly Norris is the authority on gardening with bearded irises. His introductory chapters offer tips for successful growth, garden design, plant selection, and "creating" new irises. A Guide to Bearded Irises also provides portraits of the most outstanding plants in each of the six recognized categories, from the dainty miniature dwarf bearded irises to the stately tall bearded irises. A resource section lists specialty nurseries, organizations devoted to bearded irises, and public gardens with notable iris collections.

Book Iris Red Iris Dead

  • Author : Robert L Strohman
  • Publisher : Page Publishing Inc
  • Release : 2016-03-11
  • ISBN : 168213525X
  • Pages : 238 pages

Download or read book Iris Red Iris Dead written by Robert L Strohman and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-03-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Caesar’s Gaul, all iris flowers are divided into three parts. These six-petaled blooms bear three petals which arch upward; these are called standards (your mnemonic: they stand up). The three alternating petals that hang downward are called falls (they fall down). The classes, or types, of irises are also divided into three: bearded, beardless, and crested. The bearded group includes miniature dwarf bearded (MDB), standard dwarf bearded (SDB), intermediate bearded (IB), border bearded (BB), miniature tall bearded (MTB), tall bearded (TB), and aril and arilbred (AR and AB). On each fall of all these is a fuzzy (some say wormlike) growth called the beard. In its stead, on the beardless irises (Siberian, Japanese, Louisiana, spuria, Dutch, and many other species) there is a flattened streak called a signal, usually yellow, less commonly white. Beards may be yellow, white, blue, brown, or any other color hybridizers may have been able to produce. Beards and signals serve no function other than as guidelines for bees alighting on the blooms, proclaiming “Walk this way” to the bee searching for nectar at the flower’s base.
