Download or read book The Adventurous Life of Amelia B Edwards written by Margaret C. Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Victorian England, Amelia B. Edwards was an iconic cultural figure, admired by Trollope and Browning for her best-selling fiction and by the wider public for her witty, thought-provoking travel writing. In later life, she became a celebrated historian, bringing fresh understanding of the world of Ancient Egypt to a fascinated public and founding the Egyptian Exploration Fund (Society). This new biography uses previously overlooked sources to tell the story of her fascinating and unconventional life - her travels, travails and feminist activism - as well as touching on her occasionally problematic views on race. In appreciation of a figure ahead of her time, it examines her involvement in suffrage and animal rights societies as well as revealing new insights into Edwards' loving same-sex relationships with Ellen Rice Byrne and Lucy Renshaw. In doing so, it reveals a versatile, creative, witty, independent woman, and a true pioneer of her time.

Book excerpt: Karl Marx's 'The Capital (Vol. 1-3)' is a seminal work that delves into the intricacies of capitalism, exploring the economic relationships between labor, commodities, and capital. Written in a complex yet engaging literary style, Marx's analysis illuminates the exploitation inherent in capitalist systems and offers a critique of the inequalities it perpetuates. The book's historical and social context, published in the mid-19th century, reflects the industrial revolution and the emergence of modern capitalism, making it a key text in the development of Marxist theory. Marx's use of empirical data and theoretical frameworks sets 'The Capital' apart as a foundational text in the realms of political economy and social criticism. As an influential figure in the socialist movement, Marx's insights continue to inform debates on class struggle and economic structures in contemporary society. 'The Capital' is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the roots of capitalist exploitation and the potential for social transformation.

Book excerpt: Facing financial chaos, Porfirio Diaz’s strategy in the 1880s was to create a bank with a legal monopoly over lending to the government and to enforce elites’ property rights in order to get their support. This book shows how Mexican leaders, even after the Mexican Revolution, failed to alter these basic economic and political policies, resulting in a continuing high level of financial and industrial concentration.

Download or read book The French Revolution Vol 1 3 written by Hippolyte Taine and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 1857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution in three volumes is a historical work by French historian Hippolyte Taine. This period of far-reaching social and political upheaval in France began in 1789 with the fall of the Bastille and held the country in turbulence for the next decade. The Revolution overthrew the monarchy, established a republic, catalyzed violent periods of political turmoil, and finally culminated in a dictatorship under Napoleon. Conceived by Taine with the aim of understanding the France of his day, his work achieved originality in its use of a long perspective to analyze the causes of the French Revolution. In particular, Taine denounced the artificiality of the revolution's political constructions (the excessively abstract and rational spirit of Robespierre, for example), which, in his mind, violently contradicted the natural and slow growth of the institutions of a State. For him, the force of history is such that it is illusory to want to change a society. Thus, following the defeat of Sedan and the Commune, Taine accuses the French Revolution of being the matrix of all evils which brought France into a cycle of decadence. It is in particular the abstraction of the philosophy of the Enlightenment which is rejected.
