Download or read book A Researcher s Guide to Sources on Soviet Social History in the 1930s written by Sheila Fitzpatrick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stalin era has been less accessible to researchers than either the preceding decade or the postwar era. The basic problem is that during the Stalin years censorship restricted the collection and dissemination of information (and introduced bias and distortion into the statistics that were published), while in the post-Stalin years access to archives and libraries remained tightly controlled. Thus it is not surprising that one of the main manifestations of glasnost has been the effort to open up records of the 1930s. In this volume Western and Soviet specialists detail the untapped potential of sources on this period of Soviet social history and also the hidden traps that abound. The full range of sources is covered, from memoirs to official documents, from city directories to computerized data bases.

Download or read book In a Maelstrom written by Zsuzsa Hetényi and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first concise history of Russian-Jewish literary prose, this book discusses Russian-Jewish literarature in four periods, analyzing the turning points (1881–82, 1897, 1917) and proposing that the selected epoch (1860–1940) represents a special strand that was unfairly left out of both Russian and Jewish national literatures. Based on theoretical sources on the subject, the book establishes the criteria of dual cultural affiliation, and in a survey of Russian-Jewish literature presents the pitfalls of assimilation and discusses different forms of anti-Semitism. After showing the oeuvre of 18 representative authors as a whole, the book analyzes a number of characteristic novels and short stories in terms of contemporary literary studies. Many texts discussed have not been reprinted since their first publication. The material offers indispensable information not only for comparative and literary studies but for multicultural, historical, ethnographic, Judaist, religious and linguistic investigations as well.

Download or read book Tracking a Diaspora written by Anatol Shmelev and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover collections unused by other scholars! Russian immigrants are one of the least studied of all the Slavic peoples because of meager collections development. Tracking a Diaspora: Émigrés from Russia and Eastern Europe in the Repositories offers librarians and archivists an abundance of fresh information describing previously unrealized and little-used archival collections on Russian émigrés. Some of these resources have been only recently acquired or opened to the public, providing rich new avenues of research for scholars and historians. This unique source provides access to greater breadth and depth of knowledge of Russian and Eastern European immigrants, their backgrounds, and their experiences coming to the United States. Tracking a Diaspora is not only a helpful new resource to specialists but also serves as an introduction to archival research for amateur genealogists and scholars. Chapters comprehensively describe a single repository, thorough descriptions of a single collection, or offer thematic overviews, such as the theme of German emigration from Russia. The text includes detailed notes, references, figures and tables, and photographs. Tracking a Diaspora describes largely unknown collections, including: a major group of archival collections that reveals more on these immigrants and their assimilation problems the holdings of the museum, libraries, and archives of Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary in upstate New York the archives of the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia the archives and Lembich library at The Tolstoy Foundation, Inc., New York the Archives of the Orthodox Church in America the manuscript collections at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) materials on the immigrants who settled in the Midwest six archival collections acquired by the State Archive of the Russian Federation the André Savine collection at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina and more! Tracking a Diaspora is of great interest to librarians, archivists, specialists in Russian history, and specialists in ethnic and immigration history.
