Download or read book Conflict in Caledonia written by Laura DeVries and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-07 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 28 February 2006, the Six Nations of the Grand River blocked workers from entering a half-built housing development in southern Ontario. They renamed the land Kanonhstaton, “the protected place.” The protest drew national and international attention to the issue of Aboriginal land rights and sparked a series of ongoing events known as the “Caledonia Crisis.” Laura DeVries’ powerful account of the dispute links the actions of police, governmental officials, and locals to entrenched non-Aboriginal discourses about law, landscape, and identity. It encourages non-Aboriginal Canadians to reconsider their assumptions – to view “facts” such as the rule of law as culturally specific notions that prevent truly equitable dialogue. DeVries not only reveals the conflicting visions of justice held by various parties to the dispute, she also seeks out possible solutions in alternative conceptualizations of sovereignty over land and law embedded in the Constitution.

Book Patrick and Elizabeth Long

Download or read book Patrick and Elizabeth Long written by Mae Long Pagdin and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by a short article on her family background and a deep passion for history, author Mae Long Pagdin spends thirty-five years haunting pioneer cemeteries, library archives, municipal records offices, and locales in Ireland, Pennsylvania, and Ontario to research her Long family ancestors, beginning with the original emigration from Ireland by Patrick and Elizabeth Long in 1791. What she uncovers tells a fascinating tale of pioneer life, as the Longs face innumerable challenges in the New World, including raids by the Indigenous peoples and a rebellion against taxation on local whisky production in Western Pennsylvania, where they first settle. But a perilous move to Upper Canada, in quest of the free land that’s being offered, poses even bigger challenges: disputes against their land grant; families on whom they depend settling elsewhere; and the relentless, gruelling work of felling huge trees before crops can be planted, while coping with wildlife intent on attacking their domestic animals and a brutal climate that can kill the ill-prepared. In an engaging and well documented narrative, author Long Pagdin tells the gripping story of the Longs confronting their challenges with courage and fortitude to establish a foothold in the New World for themselves and all the generations to follow. Naturally, Long family descendants will be fascinated by this story, but anyone who loves history will find themselves equally captivated by this lively tale of pioneer life.

Book excerpt: When Ezra Chipman brought fellow Canadian George Sternaman to board at his Buffalo home, he set in motion a nightmarish chain of events. Within months, Ezra was dead of a mysterious ailment. Then, shortly after marrying Ezra's widow Olive, George developed similar symptoms. Impoverished by George's long illness, the family moved to his mother's farm in Haldimand County, Ontario. There, in August 1896, 24-year-old George Sternaman died. After his funeral, Olive returned to Buffalo to try to pick up the pieces of her life. Meanwhile, a Canadian investigation into George's death had begun. Medical examinations and evidence uncovered by Ontario's "great detective," John Wilson Murray, pointed to one conclusion: George Sternaman had died of arsenic poisoning. Olive was arrested and charged with his murder. Sensational legal battles followed, involving the highest courts in both Canada and the United States. When Olive finally went to trial at the Haldimand County Courthouse in Cayuga, her lawyer, Welland politician William Manley German, was up against the most brilliant legal mind of the day: Britton Bath Osler. Drawing on newspaper accounts and legal documents, Cheryl MacDonald has recreated a true-to-life Victorian melodrama. Who Killed George? offers insight into the legal system, social sentiments, and status of women of the 1890s, along with the thrill of a genuine Canadian murder mystery.
