Book Two Late Cypriot City Quarters at Hala Sultan Tekke

Download or read book Two Late Cypriot City Quarters at Hala Sultan Tekke written by Peter M. Fischer and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume deals with the results from eight seasons of excavations at Hala Sultan Tekke. This harbour town - one of the largest and most important in the Eastern Mediterranean - is situated near Larnaca on the south coast of Cyprus. Two city quarters dating to the end of the 13th and the first half of the 12th centuries BC were investigated. The material remains confirm far-reaching contacts and trade with numerous other cultures including the Mycenaean, Minoan, Egyptian and Levantine. Detailed studies on stratigraphy, pottery and small finds are presented. Special studies deal with metal production, animal and plant remains, geophysical prospection, radiocarbon and architectural reconstructions.

Download or read book Making Ancient Cities written by Andrew T. Creekmore, III and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates how the structure and use of space developed and changed in cities, and examines the role of different societal groups in shaping urbanism. Culturally and chronologically diverse case studies provide a basis to examine recent theoretical and methodological shifts in the archaeology of ancient cities. The book's primary goal is to examine how ancient cities were made by the people who lived in them. The authors argue that there is a mutually constituting relationship between urban form and the actions and interactions of a plurality of individuals, groups, and institutions, each with their own motivations and identities. Space is therefore socially produced as these agents operate in multiple spheres.

Book Freedom of Religion and Belief A World Report

Download or read book Freedom of Religion and Belief A World Report written by Kevin Boyle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, the first of its kind yet to be published, provides a detailed and impartial account of how the individual's right to hold beliefs is understood, protected or denied throughout the world. Consisting of accessible, short edited entries based on drafts commissioned from experts living in the countries surveyed, it exposes persecution and discrimination in virtually all world regions. The book: * provides an analysis of United Nations standards of freedom of religion and belief * covers over fifty countries, divided into regions and introduced by a regional overview * covers themes including: the relationships between belief groups and the state; freedom to manifest belief in law and practice; religion and schools; religious minorities; new religious movements; the impact of beliefs on the status of women; and the extent to which conscientious objection to military service is recognised by governments * draws on examples of accommodation and co-operation between different religions and beliefs and identifies the main challenges to be overcome if the diversity of human conviction is to be established.
