Book Family Planning in the Legacy of Islam

Download or read book Family Planning in the Legacy of Islam written by Abdel-Rahim Omran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has the Islamic view of marriage, family formation and child rearing developed and adapted over the centuries? Is contraception just permitted or actively encouraged? The family is the basic social unit of Islamic society. Even without compelling population pressures, there has been concern with spacing and family planning. This book is the result of a massive research project, gathering fourteen centuries (the seventh to the twentieth) of views on family formation and planning, as expressed by leading Islamic theologians and jurists. The work has been discussed and shaped at each stage by a committee of Islamic experts representing the majority of the Muslim countries. The book provides a much needed source of reference and will be of equal value and interest to professionals in health care and development work and to those working in the academic disciplines of Middle East studies, religion and population studies.

Download or read book The Swords of Ezekiel written by Tom McCall ThD and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-08 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To those who have a fairly good background in the hard sciences: Maybe Ezekiel really did mean horses and ancient armor........ The Swords of Ezekiel accepts the plain teaching of the text that the Magog raiders wield weapons from the generation before the Gunpowder Revolution and use horses for transportation. Consequently, the narrative that emerges is a dramatic departure from the generally accepted modern weapons teaching of present-day scholars. In this alternative understanding, the two chapters are complementary descriptions of the same series of events. i.e. One has details that the other does not have. The chronological narrative emerges when the two segments are properly aligned like a spline gear on a drive shaft. Thoroughly referenced, this is the book to read for a better understanding of the relationship between natural science, European history, legend as guide to history, art as secular prophet, archaeology outside the Near East and Bible prophecy. The primary motives for the raid are anti-Israel resentment, jealousy and near starvation levels of crop-failure hunger. The absence of modern weapons is explained as a combination of industrial collapse and an as-yet unobserved destabilization of nitrate-based propellants and explosives. The merchants of Tarshish are identified as the British Commonwealth based on cultural heritage, mineral resources, geography and geopolitics. The Swords of Ezekiel also suggests a location for these events on the prophetic timeline. Prompt access to the references is provided by a link at www.swordsofezekiel.com. N.B. Book I Don t Like the Blues

Download or read book I Don t Like the Blues written by B. Brian Foster and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you love and not like the same thing at the same time? This was the riddle that met Mississippi writer B. Brian Foster when he returned to his home state to learn about Black culture and found himself hearing about the blues. One moment, Black Mississippians would say they knew and appreciated the blues. The next, they would say they didn't like it. For five years, Foster listened and asked: "How?" "Why not?" "Will it ever change?" This is the story of the answers to his questions. In this illuminating work, Foster takes us where not many blues writers and scholars have gone: into the homes, memories, speculative visions, and lifeworlds of Black folks in contemporary Mississippi to hear what they have to say about the blues and all that has come about since their forebears first sang them. In so doing, Foster urges us to think differently about race, place, and community development and models a different way of hearing the sounds of Black life, a method that he calls listening for the backbeat.

Book The different aspects of islamic culture

Download or read book The different aspects of islamic culture written by UNESCO and published by UNESCO Publishing. This book was released on 1998-12-31 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the first of six to be published, studies fundamental values of Islam, along with the nature of rights and the responsibilities in a general context. The authors analyse the development of social thought and morality in Islam, and ways in which they are enforced through the family and education. Particular attention is paid to the status of women, children, youth and the socially excluded. Several chapters broach specially Islamic approaches to economics, government and justice. A world religion since its inception in the seventh century A.D., Islam is today seeking vigorous answers to contemporary problems through its multi-faceted history. Issues of poverty and wealth, inequality and demands for political expression, and respect for diversity in a difficult world of conformity are dealt with in this series. The study is organized along thematic rather than chronological lines and thus it is not necessary to read the volumes in order. Volume II is in fact the first to have been published. Volume IV is forthcoming end 2002, volume V mid 2003 and volumes III and VI in 2004. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jabir ibn Hayyan, for a long time the reigning alchemical authority both in Islam and the Latin West, has exercised numerous generations of scholars. To be sure, it is not only the vexed question of the historical authorship and dating of the grand corpus Jabirianum which poses a serious scholarly challenge; equally challenging is the task of unraveling all those obscure and tantalizing discourses which it contains. This book, which marks the first full-scale study of Jabir ever to be published in the English language, takes up both challenges. The author begins by critically reexamining the historical foundations of the prevalent view that the Jabirian corpus is the work not of an 8th-century individual, but that of several generations of Shi'i authors belonging to the following century and later. Tentatively concluding that this view is problematic, the author, therefore, infers that its methodological implications are also problematic. Thus, developing its own methodological matrix, the book takes up the second challenge, namely that of a substantive analysis and explication of a Jabirian discourse, the Book of Stones. Here explicating Jabir's notions of substance and qualities, analyzing his ontological theory of language and unraveling the metaphysics of his Science of Balance, the author reconstructs the doctrinal context of the Stones and expounds its central theme. He then presents an authoritative critical edition of a substantial selection of the text of the Stones, based on all available manuscripts. This critical edition has been translated in its entirety and is provided with exhaustive commentaries and textual notes -- another pioneering feature of this book: for this is the first English translation of a Jabirian text to emerge in print after a whole century. An outstanding contribution is that it announces and presents an exciting textual discovery: the author has found in the Stones a hitherto unknown Arabic translation of part of Aristotle's Categories. Given that we have so far known of only one other, and possibly later, classical Arabic translation of the Greek text, Haq's discovery gives this book an historical importance.

Download or read book Wilderness Trekking Oman written by John Edwards and published by . This book was released on 2021-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hajar Mountains rise up from the great central deserts of the Arabian plateau - the so-called Empty Quarter - and then look down to the coastal plain that runs into the waters of the Gulf of Oman. Beautiful and remote, often almost entirely inaccessible, these harsh rocky slopes with their breathtaking views of Oman are largely unexplored. Wilderness Trekking in Oman is a practical guide for hiking in the Western Hajar, following some 200km of mountain trails. Meticulously researched and presented with detailed original cartography, this comprehensive guide is the key to discovering a remarkable landscape. The mountain traverse follows the spine of the mountains in a point-to-point walk taking sixteen days which can be broken down into eight one-day walks, two two-day walks, and one four-day walk. There is a road intersection with a village or hotel between each of these eleven sections. The traverse climbs to the highest accessible peak in the country at 2999m and finishes in remote dry valleys, called wadis, where impregnable cliffs have precluded road construction and electricity transmission. This has preserved the Arabian mountain lifestyle that has existed for centuries. ? This book describes where to go, what to carry, where to sleep, and, most importantly, where to find drinking water. Some hikers may choose to be supported by friends meeting them in a 4WD vehicle at road intersections marking the end of each section. For their benefit, this book includes excursions at eight of these ten rendezvous points. There are other possibilities for resupply at all ten road intersections. Digital data for download comprises GPS tracks, waypoints, kmz map files, and PDF files of each chapter. A folded 1:50,000 map covering 607km of side tracks and the traverse can be purchased separately. Hikers who have completed part or all of this traverse are invited to post reviews on social media accessible from www.hajarhiking. com, where there are historical photographs and video recorded on parts of this traverse in 1992 when there was only one road in the entire mountain range.

Book Plague and Empire in the Early Modern Mediterranean World

Download or read book Plague and Empire in the Early Modern Mediterranean World written by Nükhet Varlik and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first systematic scholarly study of the Ottoman experience of plague during the Black Death pandemic and the centuries that followed. Using a wealth of archival and narrative sources, including medical treatises, hagiographies, and travelers' accounts, as well as recent scientific research, Nükhet Varlik demonstrates how plague interacted with the environmental, social, and political structures of the Ottoman Empire from the late medieval through the early modern era. The book argues that the empire's growth transformed the epidemiological patterns of plague by bringing diverse ecological zones into interaction and by intensifying the mobilities of exchange among both human and non-human agents. Varlik maintains that persistent plagues elicited new forms of cultural imagination and expression, as well as a new body of knowledge about the disease. In turn, this new consciousness sharpened the Ottoman administrative response to the plague, while contributing to the makings of an early modern state.
