Download or read book Authenticating Ethnic Tourism written by Philip Feifan Xie and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2011 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a shifting of emphasis away from the discourse of authenticity to the process of authenticating ethnic tourism. It focuses upon what authentication is, how it works, who is involved, and what the problems are in the process. By using the study of folk villages on Hainan Island, China, the book suggests that authenticity evolves from a static into a more dynamic concept, which can be formulated according to the different stages of development relating to all the stakeholders involved. Authentication is an interactive process in which a balance of forces defines a state of equilibrium. The book uncovers some interesting findings that will significantly contribute to the literature on ethnic tourism in developing areas. "Finally, here is a way to move beyond old debates about authenticity in tourism studies, with a pragmatic, useful approach for analyzing `authentification' processes. Xie's models of stakeholders' interactions and the paradoxes encountered in ethnic tourism development have worldwide application for academics and stakeholders themselves."Margaret Swain, University of California, USA
Download or read book China Rising written by David Goodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's dramatic economic growth since the 1970s has seemed inexorable. The resulting rise in international profile has provoked a lively argument regarding the fundamental economic and strategic challenges to the rest of the world that China now presents. China Rising examines the extent to which that country's future foreign policy stance may be shaped by its own agendas and constrained through interdependence and interaction with the outside world. In the process it also questions the extent to which the rest of the world can attempt to shape that future to non-Chinese interests with any chance of success. Most debates regarding China's future international position tend to be polarised between those advocating containment and those wishing to see Beijing given a much freer hand. China Rising provides a refreshing alternative to both.

Download or read book Translocal China written by Tim Oakes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inter-disciplinary in approach, this collection of essays explores China’s reform era development within the concept of translocality. A key element of spatial change in today’s China has been the unprecedented geographic mobility of millions of labour migrants, tourists, brides, entrepreneurs, and many others. But translocality doesn’t just mean people. It is crucially constituted by the circulation of capital, ideas, images, goods, styles, services, and disease to name but a few. With contributions from well-respected China specialists, the essays focus simultaneously on mobilities and localities, drawing our attention to the multiplying forms of mobility in China whilst retaining the importance of localities in people’s lives. The book provides a clear path to understanding the importance of translocality as a concept along with concrete examples of its operation in China. Unique in approach, it is at once a study of the connections between location and culture, politics, economics, bodies, gender and technology.
Download or read book China s Lonely Revolution written by Jeremy A. Murray and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a new view of the Chinese revolution through the lens of the local Communist movement in Hainan between 1926 and 1956. Jeremy A. Murrays study of local Communist revolutionaries in Hainan between 1926 and 1956 provides a window into the diversity and complexity of the Chinese revolution. Long at the margins of the Chinese state, Hainan was once known by mainlanders only for its malarial climate and fierce indigenous people. In spite of efforts by the Chinese Nationalists and the Japanese to exterminate Hainans Communists, the movement survived because of an alliance with the indigenous Li. For years it persevered, though in complete isolation from Communist headquarters on the mainland. Using Chinese-language sources, archival materials, and interviews, Murray draws a vivid picture of this movement from the Hainanese perspective, and broadens our understanding of how patriotism, Party loyalty, and Chinese identity have been experienced and interpreted in modern China.

Download or read book From Accelerated Accumulation to Socialist Market Economy in China written by Kjeld Erik Brodsgaard and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In From Accelerated Accumulation to Socialist Market Economy in China, Kjeld Erik Brødsgaard and Koen Rutten examine China’s indigenous economic discourse and its relation to both economic policy-making and the overall trajectory of development from the First Five Year Plan in 1953 to 2016. In so doing, this volume demonstrates that although the form of the current economic system and its theoretical underpinnings bear scant resemblance to those of the planned economy, economic policy-making still relies on the principle of accelerated accumulation, which lay at the heart of the economic development project in the early years of the People’s Republic.
