Book excerpt: Doctor Vanderburg is a snake oil salesman. He's also dying on the side of the road. As chance would have it, Cyrus runs into him and his wagon of wonders and is presented with a gift. Of course it's got a bit of a curse on it. Last Halloween, I had a party. One of the things I wanted to do was to have guests tell ghost stories around a fire. This was a great idea in my head, but then I realized I needed a ghost story to tell. I did the usual Google search, but didn't find anything I was happy with. Most of what I found were urban legends and things that I was aware that the people that I would be telling the story to had probably already heard. I realized that I was just going to have to write my own ghost story. I only had a week before Halloween, but I locked the basic story down and gathered up some props for a theatrical telling which culminated in me throwing a ring into the fire...an action that would probably make sense after reading the story.

Book excerpt: Who performed the first caesarean? Was Julius Caesar born by caesarean section? If I have a caesarean for my first baby do all the other births have to be caesareans as well? Is it okay for a woman to have a caesarean just because she wants one ... or is she being selfish? What are the real risks of caesarean section? And why is the caesarean rate rising steadily in Australia, so that one in three babies is now born this way? These questions, and many others about this hotly debated surgical operation, are all answered in Hail Caesar, a well-informed and provocative explanation of every aspect of caesarean birth. From the pen of a woman doctor who has personally performed more than 4,000 caesareans comes a guide to the operation packed with facts, sympathetic to all viewpoints, and up-to-date in its attitudes. Caesarean, says Caroline de Costa, while not a natural method of birth, is now both common and safe, and should be regarded as one of the normal birth methods. Accurate information about the surgery should be supplied to all pregnant women, so that when faced with the possibility of the surgery for themselves they can make an informed decision. Currently women who give birth by caesarean too often end up feeling guilty or negative about their experience because they have not been well prepared. For mothers, mothers to be, fathers, partners, families and all those just interested in birth, here is the definitive book on caesarean section in Australia in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: Eddie Mannix and Howard Strickling are virtually unknown outside of Hollywood and little-remembered even there, but as General Manager and Head of Publicity for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, they lorded over all the stars in Hollywood's golden age from the 1920s through the 1940s--including legends like Garbo, Dietrich, Gable and Garland. When MGM stars found themselves in trouble, it was Eddie and Howard who took care of them--solved their problems, hid their crimes, and kept their secrets. They were "the Fixers." At a time when image meant everything and the stars were worth millions to the studios that owned them, Mannix and Strickling were the most important men at MGM. Through a complex web of contacts in every arena, from reporters and doctors to corrupt police and district attorneys, they covered up some of the most notorious crimes and scandals in Hollywood history, keeping stars out of jail and, more importantly, their names out of the papers. They handled problems as diverse as the murder of Paul Bern (husband of MGM's biggest star, Jean Harlow), the studio-directed drug addictions of Judy Garland, the murder of Ted Healy (creator of The Three Stooges) at the hands of Wallace Beery, and arranging for an unmarried Loretta Young to adopt her own child--a child fathered by a married Clark Gable. Through exhaustive research and interviews with contemporaries, this is the never-before-told story of Eddie Mannix and Howard Strickling. The dual biography describes how a mob-related New Jersey laborer and the quiet son of a grocer became the most powerful men at the biggest studio in the world.

Book Everything Is Cinema

Download or read book Everything Is Cinema written by Richard Brody and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When Jean-Luc Godard, exemplary director of the French New Wave, wed the ideals of filmmaking to the realities of autobiography and current events, he changed the nature of cinema. Among the greatest cinematic innovations, Godard's films shift fluidly from fiction to documentary, from criticism to art. Similarly, his persona projects shifting images - cultural hero, impassioned loner, shrewd businessman. Hailed by filmmakers as a - if not the - key influence, Godard has entered the modern canon, a figure as mysterious as he is indispensable." "In Everything is Cinema, critic Richard Brody has amassed hundreds of interviews with friends, family, and collaborators to demystify the elusive director and paint the fullest picture yet of his life and work. Paying as much attention to Godard's revolutionary technical inventions as to the political and emotional forces of the postwar world, Brody traces an arc from the director's early critical writing, through his popular success with Breathless and Contempt, to the grand vision of his later years. He vividly depicts Godard's wealthy, conservative family, his fluid and often disturbing politics, his tumultuous dealings with fellow filmmakers, and his troubled relations with women."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: The enemy were overpowered and took to flight. The Romans pursued as far as their strength enabled them to run' Between 58 and 50 BC Julius Caesar conquered most of the area now covered by France, Belgium and Switzerland, and invaded Britain twice, and The Conquest of Gaul is his record of these campaigns. Caesar’s narrative offers insights into his military strategy and paints a fascinating picture of his encounters with the inhabitants of Gaul and Britain, as well as lively portraits of the rebel leader Vercingetorix and other Gallic chieftains. The Conquest of Gaulcan also be read as a piece of political propaganda, as Caesar sets down his version of events for the Roman public, knowing he faces civil war on his return to Rome. Revised and updated by Jane Gardner, S. A. Handford’s translation brings Caesar’s lucid and exciting account to life for modern readers. This volume includes a glossary of persons and places, maps, appendices and suggestions for further reading.

Book excerpt: Director Joel Coen's and producer Ethan Coen's Blood Simple (1984, River Road Prods/Circle Releasing/Palace) is a contemporary noir thriller set in Texas. A taut, convoluted plot and imaginative direction made the independent release a word-of-mouth hit and established the Coen brothers' reputation for originality. Actors John Getz, Frances McDormand, and Dan Hedaya appear in the story in which a woman commits adultery, and her enraged husband hires a killer for revenge. Blackmail, violence, and mistaken assumptions lead to an edgy, exhilarating climax.

Book The Coen Brothers and the Comedy of Democracy

Download or read book The Coen Brothers and the Comedy of Democracy written by Sara MacDonald and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both critically and commercially successful filmmakers, the Coen brothers have written, produced, and directed numerous acclaimed films over the past three decades. Sara MacDonald and Barry Craig demonstrate that their comedies, in particular, which are often dismissed as mere entertainments, actually present substantial philosophic and political arguments. They examine five of the Coen brothers’ comedies: Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou, and Hail Caesar!. In those works, they discover insightful engagements with such ideas as questions of human freedom, the relationship of reason to religion, and the nature of liberal democracy in the American regime. They demonstrate how sometimes explicitly, but generally implicitly, the Coens draw on thinkers such as Homer, Plato, Dante, and Hegel, while simultaneously presenting popular entertainment.

Book excerpt: Black Powder is Warlord Games' first publication. It is a beautiful book in its own right with hundreds of color photographs taken by the Perry brothers of the most exquisitely painted model soldiers from their world-renowned collection. The rule book's intention is inspire a collector to play gentlemanly games with their own collections of soldiers with friends where the emphasis is on the spirit of the age of musket, not the letter of the rule. With decisive battles from the key wars of the period, such as El Teb, from the Sudan War, Ntombi River from the Zulu Wars, Alma from the Crimean War and Freemans Farm from the American War of Independence, as well as two fictional scenarios from the American Civil War and Napoleon's Wars, there really is something to keep everyone happy. It is a hearty publication and not for nitpickers or miseries. There are some good gags in it, but it also plays well and enables players to conduct a very big battle in a civilized period of time, leaving them more time to chat about the highs and lows and what ifs. Rick Priestley is best known as the famous Warhammer and Warhammer 40000 author, the world's best selling table top miniatures game and Product Director for Games Workshop. He lives in Nottingham.
