Book HAIKU SANDS

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Holman Faust
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2004-03-17
  • ISBN : 141407185X
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book HAIKU SANDS written by Paul Holman Faust and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004-03-17 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The verses included in this publication concentrate on themes encountered in everyday life; simple experiences that can be evoked by just a few verbal hints. Ranging in subject from the most elegant to the most seemingly trivial, they capture the essence of what the author describes as “Suggestive Brevity” by sketching virtual word pictures. The Scenes and Sentiments [SANDS] that led to the creation of each of these works are included to illustrate the process leading to such verbal framing. It should, however, be noted that most were written in and about Japan as seen through “blue eyes” so that they may vary significantly from a similar view as seen through Japanese eyes. Readers with artistic or illustrative skill and a “suggestive technique” are encouraged to try their hand at creating a haiga [Haiku-esque Artwork] in the open space on each page. Simple, yet providing a deeper sense of place and feeling, a haiga, with its informal and modest brush or pen work, possesses a “Suggestive Brevity” that can infuse the appropriate haiku with a previously unknown effect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I think back on the years I’ve spent in the Middle East, I tend to feel this burning sense of nostalgia. Having spent my years as a firefighter assigned in an airbase, I was mostly surrounded by the desert. In the quietness that engulfed the place and the solitude of being far away from home, I found a friend in poetry. Gazing into the clear blue skies and the stunning desert, I saw the beauty of life. Sandstorms can happen in the moments you least expect, a mirage could occur and deceive you before your eyes, and there were days when intense sunlight can burn through your skin. But despite it all, the calmness follows after and it becomes a picturesque scenery once more. The desert is a lot like life. Unexpected turbulences may occur but, in the end, there is always that calmness purging from the surface. This book is all about life, love, and nature. These poems are testaments that despite the adversities life can bring, it goes on and remains to be beautiful.

Book The Winter Sun Shines in

Download or read book The Winter Sun Shines in written by Donald Keene and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than resist the vast changes sweeping Japan in the 19th century, the poet Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) incorporated new Western influences into his country's native haiku and tanka verse. Based on extensive readings of Shiki's own writings and accounts of the poet by his contemporaries and family, Donald Keene Charts Shiki's distinctive (and often contradictory) experiments with haiku and tanka, a dynamic process that made the survival of these genres possible in a globalizing world.

Book The Preparation of the Novel

Download or read book The Preparation of the Novel written by Roland Barthes and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completed just weeks before his death, the lectures in this volume mark a critical juncture in the career of Roland Barthes, in which he declared the intention, deeply felt, to write a novel. Unfolding over the course of two years, Barthes engaged in a unique pedagogical experiment: he combined teaching and writing to "simulate" the trial of novel-writing, exploring every step of the creative process along the way. Barthes's lectures move from the desire to write to the actual decision making, planning, and material act of producing a novel. He meets the difficulty of transitioning from short, concise notations (exemplified by his favorite literary form, haiku) to longer, uninterrupted flows of narrative, and he encounters a number of setbacks. Barthes takes solace in a diverse group of writers, including Dante, whose La Vita Nuova was similarly inspired by the death of a loved one, and he turns to classical philosophy, Taoism, and the works of François-René Chateaubriand, Gustave Flaubert, Franz Kafka, and Marcel Proust. This book uniquely includes eight elliptical plans for Barthes's unwritten novel, which he titled Vita Nova, and lecture notes that sketch the critic's views on photography. Following on The Neutral: Lecture Course at the Collège de France (1977-1978) and a third forthcoming collection of Barthes lectures, this volume provides an intensely personal account of the labor and love of writing.

Book Melting the ice Engaging and educational ice breaker activities for every learning session

Download or read book Melting the ice Engaging and educational ice breaker activities for every learning session written by Jen Schneider and published by John Catt. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first five minutes of a classroom experience are critical. The tone set in a session’s opening minutes can significantly impact and influence, in both positive and negative ways, the quality and nature of the subsequent learning experience. How students spend that time can also have a positive impact on their learning in both the short and long term. When the opening minutes of a class are approached as an opportunity to build student connections, collaboration, and community, all learners benefit. As more and more learning experiences occur in synchronous and asynchronous online learning environments, strategies that both welcome students to online sessions and support student learning are increasingly important. Traditional ice breakers, while typically shared with a goal of building community and student engagement, can sometimes have unintended or even negative consequences on students. This text shares a collection of powerful, opening activities that are designed to simultaneously engage students, build safe and connected classroom communities, and support student learning. All strategies are easily adapted and personalized to fit individual course and content needs including face-to-face, synchronous online, and asynchronous online learning contexts. Shared activities are aligned with associated learning-science research and incorporate strategies that have been shown to support student engagement and learning such as retrieval practice, active recall, spaced practice, and interleaving, among other evidence-based instructional strategies.

Book excerpt: A compact collection of more than 500 poems from Jack Kerouac that reveal a lesser known but important side of his literary legacy “Above all, a haiku must be very simple and free of all poetic trickery and make a little picture and yet be as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi pastorella.”—Jack Kerouac Renowned for his groundbreaking Beat Generation novel On the Road, Jack Kerouac was also a master of the haiku, the three-line, seventeen-syllable Japanese poetic form. Following the tradition of Basho, Buson, Shiki, Issa, and other poets, Kerouac experimented with this centuries-old genre, taking it beyond strict syllable counts into what he believed was the form’s essence. He incorporated his “American” haiku in novels and in his correspondence, notebooks, journals, sketchbooks, and recordings. In Book of Haikus, Kerouac scholar Regina Weinreich has supplemented a core haiku manuscript from Kerouac’s archives with a generous selection of the rest of his haiku, from both published and unpublished sources.
