Book Haiku and Blue Mountain Poems

Download or read book Haiku and Blue Mountain Poems written by Robert N. Britcher and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Cooperation and trust are essential ingredients of social life, made public through language, spoken and written. From the signals and gestures of our predecessors to the grafting of sound and markings to modern grammar, what we say and write represents what we think and what we think and feel represents what we perceive and have perceived of the world. Were truth a random occurrence, or of relatively little significance, our language would be vastly different, itself undependable. Such is not the case however: our words and grammar reflect what we see, hear, feel, imagine, and do.” -- From “The Limits of Truth” (XLIBRIS)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2005 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Basho's Haiku offers the most comprehensive translation yet of the poetry of Japanese writer Matsuo Bashō (1644–1694), who is credited with perfecting and popularizing the haiku form of poetry. One of the most widely read Japanese writers, both within his own country and worldwide, Bashō is especially beloved by those who appreciate nature and those who practice Zen Buddhism. Born into the samurai class, Bashō rejected that world after the death of his master and became a wandering poet and teacher. During his travels across Japan, he became a lay Zen monk and studied history and classical poetry. His poems contained a mystical quality and expressed universal themes through simple images from the natural world. David Landis Barnhill's brilliant book strives for literal translations of Bashō's work, arranged chronologically in order to show Bashō's development as a writer. Avoiding wordy and explanatory translations, Barnhill captures the brevity and vitality of the original Japanese, letting the images suggest the depth of meaning involved. Barnhill also presents an overview of haiku poetry and analyzes the significance of nature in this literary form, while suggesting the importance of Bashō to contemporary American literature and environmental thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of one thousand haiku entitled Between Tides was inspired by experiences gathered within what I refer to as the Bowl, that geographical region in the Pacific Northwest located between Mount Baker and Mount Rainier and the Cascade Mountains and the Olympic Peninsula. They are poems of mountain, air, forest, and sea. Some are written in the seventeen-syllable Japanese haiku tradition (5-7-5), but most follow a less structured or Americanized version of the form, which isnt uncommon among English translations of Japanese haiku. Haiku is the worlds shortest poem. One might say they are the worlds shortest story. Haiku captures either physical nature or human nature. They live in the moment. I liken the discovery of a haiku to finding sand dollars on a beach. I find haiku an excellent way to clarify and preserve experience. These poems have been influenced by studies in Zen Buddhism and Native American tradition. They are a celebration of the unique seasons and great wonders of the Pacific Northwest.

It detailsthose precious moments in life in whose ordinariness might otherwise go by unacknowledged save for the gift of Haiku. It is more than a simple poem, it is an artform that suspends eternity in simple things. As an avid practitioner of this craft I aspire to this notion. To convey my present experience and capture the ever illusive 'Haiku moment'.

Book Poverty Creek Anthology An Appalachian Memoir in Haiku

Download or read book Poverty Creek Anthology An Appalachian Memoir in Haiku written by Nancy Bagato and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty Creek flows through national forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, skirting the edge of rural farms and residences before flowing into another creek and eventually joining the New River. More importantly, it symbolizes living on the edge of poverty, and occasionally wading in, which remains a part of the Appalachian experience. Like its namesake, this collection of three-line poems meanders through Virginia's small towns, back roads, college campus bustle, and rural isolation to reveal the beauty and pain of nature and humans intersecting. Part personal experience, part observation, these haiku capture Americana and a spectrum of emotions in small moments, season by season.
