Book excerpt: The Nibelungenlied, translated as The Song of the Nibelungs, is an epic poem in Middle High German. The story tells of dragon-slayer Siegfried at the court of the Burgundians. It may be considered as the worlds first fantasy story. Heroes, dragons, treasures, sword fights and magic. This is the prose version of the famous epic poem. The Nibelungenlied is based on pre-Christian Germanic heroic motifs (the ""Nibelungensaga""), which include oral traditions and reports based on historic events and individuals of the 5th and 6th centuries. Old Norse parallels of the legend survive in the Volsunga saga, the Prose Edda, the Poetic Edda, the Legend of Norna-Gest, and the iorekssaga.

Book Common Worlds and Single Lives

Download or read book Common Worlds and Single Lives written by Verena Keck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pacific societies, local knowledge, which has been accumulated over thousands of years and is irreplaceable, is rapidly disappearing. With the extinction of languages, the ability to observe and interpret the world from varying perspectives is also being lost. At the same time, an enormous body of knowledge about nature, plants and animals is vanishing. However, in parallel with this, the people of the Pacific are confronted with new modes of knowledge and newly introduced technologies through imported educational systems, missions of various denominations, and the media. They do not passively assimilate this knowledge but adopt, adapt, and apply it in a syncretistic way. These changes will have permanent effects on the individual lives of people in the region and their knowledge about themselves and their surrounding 'world'. This stimulating book tracks the course of these developments and offers revealing insights into the complexity of Pacific peoples' responses to the process of globalization.

Book A True Child of Papua New Guinea

Download or read book A True Child of Papua New Guinea written by Maggie Wilson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maggie Wilson was born in the highlands of Papua New Guinea to Melka Amp Jara, a woman of the highlands, and Patrick Leahy, brother of Australian explorers Michael and Daniel Leahy, who were among the first Australian explorers to encounter people in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, during an expedition in search for gold. Maggie's life serves as a window into the complex social and cultural transformations experienced during the early years of the Australian administration in Papua New Guinea and the first three decades after independence. This ethnography--started as an autobiography and completed by Rosita Henry after Maggie's death in 2009--tells Maggie's story and the stories of those whose lives she touched. Their recollections of Maggie Wilson offer insights into life in Papua New Guinea today.

Book Kings and Captains

Download or read book Kings and Captains written by Charles Moorman and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Moorman reexamines several major works of the western heroic tradition: The Iliad, The Odyssey, Beowulf, The Song of Roland, The Nibelungenlied, the Norse sagas, and the Arthurian cycle. Disregarding the usual limited definitions which have controlled the study of heroic literature, he draws together these disparate works by proposing a theme common to them all: the opposition of two major figures whom he names king and captain. The figure of the king arises from the community with its need for responsible government, while the captain, derived from myth, is a highly individualistic, irresponsible heroic figure. The tension which Moorman sees between them is used as a means of reinterpreting the works under study. Though widely separated in time and cultural milieu, The Illiad, and The Song of Roland, for example, can be compared by interpreting both the Agamemnon-Achilles and the Oliver-Roland relationships as conflicts between king and captain. These essays will prove illuminating for layman and scholar alike.
