Book excerpt: This volume reviews the current understanding of the taxonomy, disease syndromes, genetics, biology, and pathogenic factors of Histophilus somni, as well as the host immune response to this pathogen. H. somni is one of the most important bacterial pathogens in cattle and other ruminants, and its virulence factors are highly conserved with Haemophilus influenzae and other members of the Pasteurellaceae. H. somni has been recognized as a major cause of thrombotic meningoencephalitis, respiratory disease syndromes, myocarditis, reproductive disease syndromes, polyarthritis, mastitis, ocular disease, and septicemia. The only known habitats of H. somni are the mucosal surfaces of ruminants, making this bacterium an opportunistic pathogen. Although it is capable of causing inflammation at systemic sites and is toxic to epithelial and phagocytic cells, the bacterium’s wide array of virulence factors act primarily as a defense against, or to escape recognition from, host innate and adaptive immunity.

Book Immediate type 1 Hypersensitivity and Haemophilus Somnus

Download or read book Immediate type 1 Hypersensitivity and Haemophilus Somnus written by Kevin William Ruby and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 5) Haemophilus somnus bacterins and a modified live BRSV vaccine can synergize to enhance higher plasma concentrations of eicosanoids associated with development of a hypersensitized state and a late-phase asthmatic-like bronchoconstriction (LTB4, LTC4, and TxB2), 6) Haemophilus somnus produces histamine and may contribute to inflammation, development of a type-1 hypersensitivity, and airway hyperresponsiveness in bovine respiratory disease. This work may partially explain the more severe clinical disease occasionally observed in vaccinated cattle compared to nonvaccinated cattle.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third International Conference on Haemophilus, Actinobacillus, and Pasteurella (HAP94) was held in July and August at the Edinburgh Conference Centre, Heriot-Watt University, Riccarton Campus, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Previous conferences in 1981, Copenhagen, and 1989, Guelph, had indicated widespread interest in this group of pathogenic bacteria and the timing of the Edinburgh conference was prompted by the major advances in our knowledge of the HAP group that had occurred in the five years since the Guelph meeting. These organisms are considered as a group because of their close relationship in an evolutionary sense and because of the similarities in the types of diseases that they preduce. The main objectives of the meeting were to review and discuss current knowledge and present experimental findings relating to the fundamental, applied, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of disease research involving the HAP group of organisms. HAP 94 was attended by 160 delegates from around the world and included many of the foremost researchers studying HAP organisms. The conference was structured around 16 talks from invited speakers who covered key areas of HAP research including taxonomy, mechanisms of pathogenesis, animal disease models, virulence factors, molecular biology, immunolgy, antigen analyses, and experimental and commercial vaccine development. The talks provided a review of the current state of research in each field and allowed each speaker to focus on his or her personal research interests.

Book Pathology of Domestic Animals

Download or read book Pathology of Domestic Animals written by K. V. F. Jubb and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathology of Domestic Animals, Volume 1 elaborates on the bone structure and diseases, as well as the genital, circulatory, and respiratory systems, of domestic animals. The manuscript first offers information on bones, joints, and synovial structures and diseases of joints, including adaptational deformities of the skeleton, metabolic diseases of bones, necrosis and inflammation of bones, and discontinuities of bone and the healing of fractures. The text then ponders on the circulatory and respiratory systems. Discussions focus on congenital anomalies of the heart and large vessels, myocardium, hypertrophy and dilation of the heart, pharynx and guttural pouches, larynx and trachea, lungs, and pleura and mediastinum. The publication examines the haemopoietic system and endocrine glands. Topics include blood and bone marrow, general reactions of erythrocytes to injury, lymphoreticular tissues, adrenal glands and paraganglia, and polycythaemia. The book then reviews the male and female genital systems. The manuscript is a valuable source of data for readers interested in the pathology of domestic animals.
