Book Melting Hadrons Boiling Quarks From Hagedorn Temperature to Ultra Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions at CERN

Download or read book Melting Hadrons Boiling Quarks From Hagedorn Temperature to Ultra Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions at CERN written by Johann Rafelski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the study of multi-hadron production phenomena in the years after the founding of CERN culminated in Hagedorn's pioneering idea of limiting temperature, leading on to the discovery of the quark-gluon plasma -- announced, in February 2000 at CERN. Following the foreword by Herwig Schopper -- the Director General (1981-1988) of CERN at the key historical juncture -- the first part is a tribute to Rolf Hagedorn (1919-2003) and includes contributions by contemporary friends and colleagues, and those who were most touched by Hagedorn: Tamás Biró, Igor Dremin, Torleif Ericson, Marek Gaździcki, Mark Gorenstein, Hans Gutbrod, Maurice Jacob, István Montvay, Berndt Müller, Grazyna Odyniec, Emanuele Quercigh, Krzysztof Redlich, Helmut Satz, Luigi Sertorio, Ludwik Turko, and Gabriele Veneziano. The second and third parts retrace 20 years of developments that after discovery of the Hagedorn temperature in 1964 led to its recognition as the melting point of hadrons into boiling quarks, and to the rise of the experimental relativistic heavy ion collision program. These parts contain previously unpublished material authored by Hagedorn and Rafelski: conference retrospectives, research notes, workshop reports, in some instances abbreviated to avoid duplication of material, and rounded off with the editor's explanatory notes. About the editor: Johann Rafelski is a theoretical physicist working at The University of Arizona in Tucson, USA. Bor n in 1950 in Krakow, Poland, he received his Ph.D. with Walter Greiner in Frankfurt, Germany in 1973. Rafelski arrived at CERN in 1977, where in a joint effort with Hagedorn he contributed greatly to the establishment of the relativistic heavy ion collision, and quark-gluon plasma research fields. Moving on, with stops in Frankfurt and Cape Town, to Arizona, he invented and developed the strangeness quark flavor as the signature of quark-gluon plasma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physicists actively engaged in advanced research should be en couraged to discuss results and deepen their theoretical understand ing of the data. It is practically impossible nowadays to achieve the goal of the old times when small groups of scientists had the privilege of debating their ideas and the details of their experi ments in an informal and friendly way. Conferences are now too wide in scientific coverage and, in consequence, there are often too many participants. The Highly Specialized Seminars of the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture are intended to provide such a forum for scientists of outstanding reputation in their fields to exchange information. This volume deals with one of the most interesting topics in subnuclear physics, and Professor Giuliano Preparata is one of the world's leaders in the field. This volume contains the most recent results on the study of deep inelastic phenomena, using neutrinos, muons and electrons against nucleons, and (e+e- ) interactions. It represents our best knowledge of the field as given by some of the most distinguished world experts in the theoretical and experimental domain. Antonino Zichichi, Director Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture v PREFACE In March 1979, about 50 physicists gathered in Erice to parti cipate in the Fourth Highly Specialized Seminar on "Probing Hadrons with Leptons."

Book The Higgs Boson Produced With Top Quarks in Fully Hadronic Signatures

Download or read book The Higgs Boson Produced With Top Quarks in Fully Hadronic Signatures written by Daniel Salerno and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this PhD dissertation is the first search at CMS for Higgs bosons produced in association with top quarks (ttH) in a final state consisting of only jets. The results presented in this book uncover a new class of ttH events that will help us elucidate our understanding of the Yukawa sector interactions between the Higgs boson and the top quark. Despite this being the most common decay signature for ttH, a large contamination of SM backgrounds makes it the most challenging for extracting a signal from data. The PhD thesis presents many sophisticated tools and techniques that were developed in order to overcome these challenges. These tools pave the way for future analyses to investigate other standard model and beyond-standard model physics.

  • Pages : 707 pages

Download or read book Hadron Physics written by T. Bressani and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2005-07-29 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the International School of Physics Enrico Fermi is dedicated to Valerio Filippini. He devoted his life to physics. Valerio Filippini was born in Somma Lombardo (Milano) on December 8, 1958. He obtained the Master Degree in Physics at the University of Pavia in 1982, cum laude. After a working parenthesis at an industrial firm, he became Research Physicist of INFN, Sezione di Pavia, in 1988 and was promoted Senior Research Physicist in 1993. He participated to the experiments PS 179 (TOFRADUPP) and PS 201 (Obelix) at LEAR (CERN), FINUDA at LNF and ATHENA at AD (CERN). His outstanding scientific contributions were provided in the OBELIX and FINUDA experiments. Nobody could compete with Filippini in exploiting at best the daily-evoluting performances of the computing tools for the needs of the experiments, both for on-line and off-line purposes. The FINUDA experiment collected physics data immediately after the roll-in thanks to the reliability and simplicity of the on-line system designed and assembled by the physicist. However, he was not only a 'Clavier Physicist' but a complete Scientist: he also leaded the Pavia Group in designing and providing advanced detectors, and in developing mathematical methods for the analysis of the data. His scientific contributions are documented by about 90 publications on refereed international journals, about 100 contributions to International Conferences and Workshops, and 3 invited talks.

Book Hadron Physics 96 Topics On The Structure And Interaction Of Hadronic Systems Proceedings Of The International Workshop

Download or read book Hadron Physics 96 Topics On The Structure And Interaction Of Hadronic Systems Proceedings Of The International Workshop written by Erasmo Ferreira and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-05-05 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of QCD in the confinement regime poses some of the most difficult problems of fundamental physics at present. The mechanism of confinement is not yet understood, and it is hard to investigate the properties of the fundamental theory in the determination of the structures and interactions of hadronic systems. As a consequence of these difficulties, the frontier between effective and fundamental theories has been intensively investigated in the last few years, and progress has been achieved in several directions. The 'Hadron Physics' workshop gathered together experts who have been taking the lead in these developments in recent years. Four sets of lectures were presented, providing a pedagogical and updated basis that gives support to research work in frontier problems. This book puts together the main current methods in the study of the properties of hadrons. The perspective of future developments based on different approaches can then be more clearly perceived.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Hot Hadronic Matter written by Jean Letessier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen the development of the operational understanding of fun damental interactions within the standard model. This has detoured our attention from the great enigmas posed by the dynamics and collective behavior of strongly interacting particles. Discovered more than 30 years ago, the thermal nature of the hadronic particle spectra has stimulated considerable theoretical effort, which so far has failed to 'confirm' on the basis of microscopic interactions the origins of this phenomenon. However, a highly successful Statistical Bootstrap Model was developed by Rolf Hagedorn at CERN about 30 years ago, which has led us to consider the 'boiling hadronic matter' as a transient state in the trans formation of hadronic particles into their melted form which we call Quark-GIuon-Plasma (QGP). Today, we return to seek detailed understanding of the thermalization processes of hadronic matter, equipped on the theoretical side with the knowledge of the fundamental strong interaction theory, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD), and recognizing the im portant role of the complex QCD-vacuum structure. On the other side, we have developed new experimental tools in the form of nuclear relativistic beams, which allow to create rather extended regions in space-time of Hot Hadronic Matter. The confluence of these new and recent developments in theory and experiment led us to gather together from June 27 to July 1, 1994, at the Grand Hotel in Divonne-Ies-Bains, France, to discuss and expose the open questions and issues in our field.
