Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents an analysis of the polarization of J/W mesons produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy 1.8 TeV. The collisions were produced by the Fermilab Tevatron collider, the world's highest energy particle accelerator. The data were recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during Run 1 of the Tevatron in 1992-1995. The J/W meson consists of a charm quark and its antiquark, and is the best-known type of quarkonium polarization of J/W mesons and other quarkonia provides a test of quakronium production models. The study of quarkonium production is important for understanding the strong nuclear force between quarks. The strong force is one of the four known fundamental forces, being responsible for binding quarks into hadrons and holding atomic nuclei together. The polarization of centrally produced J/W mesons has been measured over the transverse momentum range 4-20 GeV/c, using analysis of the angular distribution of their decays u+u-. Decay length measurements made by CDF's silicon vertex detector allowed the promptly produced J/W mesons to be separated from those produced in B-hadon decays. The prompt and B-decay polarization parameters, ap and aB, have both been measured. The measured value of ap is positive at intermediate Pt, but this is consistent with zero above 12 GeV/c, in apparent disagreement with predictions of the NRQCD factorization formalism.

Book Deep Inelastic Positron Proton Scattering in the High Momentum Transfer Regime of HERA

Download or read book Deep Inelastic Positron Proton Scattering in the High Momentum Transfer Regime of HERA written by Ulrich F. Katz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About three decades after the first experiments on deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering began to investigate the structure of hadrons, the history of this fruitful field of particle physics continues in the broad spectrum of research performed at the electron and positron proton collider HERA at DESY, where the multipurpose detectors ZEUS and H1 access ep scattering at a center of mass energy of 300 GeV and explore as yet uncharted kinematic realms of deep inelastic scattering. After the first years of data taking at HERA, each of the experiments has collected a total of roughly 40 pb 1 of e+p data, yielding sensitivity to deep inelastic e+p interactions at high four momentum transfers, Q2, where typi cal cross sections drop into the subpicobarn regime. This kinematic domain is characterized by electroweak unification, manifesting itself most markedly in the neutral and charged current cross sections, which approach an equal order of magnitude as Q2 rises above the square of the W and Z masses. Consequently, HERA allows, for the first time, studies of both types of pro cesses simultaneously with the same initial state conditions and in the same detector, and thus we can investigate the interplay of electroweak and strong forces governing the respective cross sections.

Book Hadron Structure in Deep Inelastic Scattering

Download or read book Hadron Structure in Deep Inelastic Scattering written by Andrew Casey and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) is an experimental process used to probe a wide variety of properties of hadronic matter. It is a process in which leptons collide with hadrons at high energies, resulting in the hadron being broken into a large number of other particles. Information obtained from this process is combined with what is known from studies of the strong force in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), to extract details of the hadronic structure. In this thesis, functions that can be extracted from DIS cross sections are discussed including structure functions, parton distribution functions, and fragmentation functions for single hadron and dihadron cases. This thesis is presented as a portfolio of publications that investigate some of the previously mentioned functions that can be extracted from DIS processes, which includes semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). The first paper describes our method for generating the dihadron fragmentation functions (DFFs) within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio-jet model. These functions describe the probability of detecting two hadrons with particular light-cone momentum fractions. The DFFs for combinations of pions and kaons calculated in the first paper are obtained at the model momentum scale of Q20 = 0.2 GeV2. Several properties of these functions are explored, including how they change if strange quarks are included. In the second paper, the appropriate evolution equations are applied to the NJL-jet model calculated DFFs to determine the DFFs at a typical experimental scale of Q2 = 4 GeV2 for combinations of pions and kaons. A comparison with the results of another model at Q2 = 109 GeV2 are also presented in this paper, with compelling results. The final paper departs from the DFFs and instead investigates the gluon spin contribution to the spin of the proton, which is extracted from the spin dependent structure function g1 using renormalization group techniques. An upper bound is suggested at leading order for the value of this contribution, with an estimate of the error calculated as well.

Book excerpt: We employ a simple, exactly solved model of confined Dirac particles to understand spin structure in hadrons. Specifically, we study the Bjorken x (or Nachtmann xi) dependence of the virtual photon spin asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from longitudinally polarized protons and neutrons. We use a relativistic potential model of the hadron, treating the constituents as independent massless Dirac particles confined to an infinitely massive force center. The importance of the p-wave components of the Dirac wave function is demonstrated. Comparisons are made to the observed data on protons and neutrons by taking into account the observed flavor dependence of the valence quark distributions.
