Book excerpt: HACKAMORE REINSMAN by ED CONNELL, first published in 1952, is a hands-on manual of instruction that describes in detail the use of the hackamore and snaffle bit. He takes green horse and trainer from the first bosal and ground-pulling to the point that the horse will slide and whirl on the hackamore. Ed's method is pure "Californio" having descended from the Moors and then the Spaniards who brought this training to the New World, developing the hair-trigger reined horses found in California. It is the Spanish method of breaking and training a horse before it is ever bitted. The focus is on making a finished hackamore horse with an untouched mouth. It emphasizes the art of reinsmanship as practiced, developed and perfected by the Old Californios and remains the bible of all books on hackamore training. Connell's 2nd book, REINSMAN OF THE WEST -- BRIDLES & BITS, gives the WHY and HOW of making a spade bit horse out of the hackamore horse, using the methods of the Old California Vaqueros. It explains how to choose the right bit and how to use that bit to get the most from your horse. Website: www.hackamore-reinsman.com.

Book Life and Times of Jo Mora

Download or read book Life and Times of Jo Mora written by Peter Hiller and published by Gibbs Smith. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential addition to any collection of Western art and Americana, The Life and Times of Jo Mora provides an in-depth biography of this gifted illustrator, painter, writer, cartographer, and sculptor. Jo Mora (1876–1947) lived the Western life he depicted in his prolific body of visual art, comprising sculpture, paintings, architectural adornments, dioramas, and maps. He explored California Missions, the natural glories of Yosemite, California’s ranch life, and eventually the culture of the Hopi and Navajo in Arizona. During his travels, Mora documented observations that became the source material and inspiration for much of his later artwork. The magnitude of Mora’s insights into his life and work, as described in his own words—many presented here in this book—cannot be underestimated. Jo Mora’s many diaries, journals, and literary efforts reveal an intellectual discernment, originality, and humor that enhance our appreciation of his work. Remarkably, throughout his life Mora supported his family solely through a series of art commissions that ranged from restaurant murals to heroic-scale sculpture. He welcomed risks and challenges, was unafraid of hard work, and did nearly everything well, from writing children’s stories to commanding an army battalion-in-training to shooting mountain lions. Ever modest, he seemed to think that this versatility was nothing extraordinary. Peter Hiller’s thoughtful presentation of Jo Mora’s life is seen here in all of its creative glory.

Book Let the Cowboy Ride

Download or read book Let the Cowboy Ride written by Paul F. Starrs and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2000-03-17 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dime novel and dude ranch, the barbecue and rodeo, the suburban ranch house and the urban cowboy—all are a direct legacy of nineteenth-century cowboy life that still enlivens American popular culture. Yet at the same time, reports of environmental destruction or economic inefficiency have motivated calls for restricted livestock grazing on public lands or even for an end to ranching altogether. In Let the Cowboy Ride, Starrs offers a detailed and comprehensive look at one of America's most enduring institutions. Richly illustrated with more than 130 photographs and maps, the book combines the authentic detail of an insider's view (Starrs spent six years working cattle on the high desert Great Basin range) with a scholar's keen eye for objective analysis.

Book Think Harmony with Horses

Download or read book Think Harmony with Horses written by Ray Hunt and published by Mitchell Beazley. This book was released on 1978 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When you ask your horse to do something it should be his idea ... he wants to do it, he understands how to do it, and he does it." These words are typical of the way Ray Hunt expresses his philosophy of the ideal relationship between horse and man. That philosophy is discussed in this book, in a manner that makes the reader feel as if he is listening to Ray talk. It is persuasive talk - gently persuasive; this man's ideas make a lot of sense, and the success he has achieved with those ideas is impressive. Ray Hunt traveled around the country working with groups of riders who were interested in his philosophy of harmony with horses. As Gene Lewis says in his forward to the book, Ray's theory is "to unite the horse and rider into one working unit of both mind and body. He has developed a language and has become a wonderful teacher and demonstrator." Included in this book is an interpretation of the "Ray Hunt method of schooling a horse" written by Vincent W. Carpenter, who attended one of Ray's clinics. He tells amazing stories that Ray might not tell about himself and summarizes the whole philosophy in a clear and objective way. Also included is a question and answer section, in which a number of the most commonly asked questions are answered in detail. And throughout the entire book runs the simple, basic idea: think harmony."--Publisher's description.

As a cowboy and rancher, horses have been more than just a means of transportation. They have been partners. Over the course of his lifetime, Pat has had the opportunity to ride with some of the best reinsmen and cowboys in the West. Early on, he developed a passion for the Californio Bridle Horse, the highest compliment you can pay a horse. The classical origins of this heritage have given Pat a unique viewpoint and the ability to communicate effectively with horses and riders of all disciplines. In this book, Pat takes on the subject of transitioning the mature horse to the bit. With step by step instructions, you will be guided along your journey of learning to ride your horse through your body rather than mechanically through your hands. What you'll find in these pages is “put your left hand here, put your right foot there” directions about how to teach your horse to tune in to your seat and legs. It includes a list of exercises to do on the ground and in the saddle along with guidelines that tell you when you should move on to the next step. With Pat's signature sense of humor and no nonsense, cowboy-style directness, this book will prove to be an invaluable tool in your quest to become a better horseman.
